Brewery Gulch Inn is a lovely place to stay in Mendocino. Relatively small, it is in a beautiful location and the surroundings are very quiet. Our room was nice albeit not as spacious as the online pictures give the impression, but we had plenty of room and were comfortable. The Inn is very close to town, and we found ourselves easily going back and forth between the two. The staff at the Inn are the nicest people - very friendly and happy to just chat with you. But by far, the food is the biggest draw to the Inn. Breakfast is included every morning, and the choices are all great. I'd have been happy to stay another night so I could try one more breakfast. In the evening, each room gets a box of appetizers to go with the included happy hour. The wine selections were nice - local Anderson Valley wineries. The food provided is more of a meal than a snack - it was our dinner for two of the nights we stayed. Excellent food - our compliments to the chef! This was our first trip to Mendocino, but I am pretty sure we will be back to both the town and the Inn.

Amazing place to get away ... quiet and peaceful, nice and friendly people. Ocean view from the outside deck (or upstairs rooms I imagine, but I stayed downstairs). Each room is unique and special. The deep bathtub was a treat and hot stone massage was heavenly. The wine and appetizer hour was generous and delectable, and I really appreciated that they took into consideration food allergies and sensitivities, not like more places that would not accommodate someone who is gluten-free. The only suggestion is to buy new comfier mattresses - unfortunately, the mattress was too hard and I couldn't sleep on it. I want to stay here again, and just hope there will be a newer softer mattress by then. Anyway, highly recommend this lodge.

Thanks for the nice review, much appreciated! We're glad to hear that you had a nice stay with us & we're always happy to accommodate dietary needs to the very best of our ability, your satisfaction is of the utmost importance to us so it's always great to hear that our guests enjoy the meal offerings we provide. We're surprised that you didn't find the bed to be as comfortable. The majority of our guests love the mattresses but it's true that everyone's needs vary quite a bit in this department. Please do know that we do replace mattresses often & hope that this won't deter you from coming back & giving us another chance to completely wow you with all aspects of your visit. Until that day comes, take good care & happy travels!

One of the most special and wonderful stays I've ever had. A perfect balance of being well taken care of in a uniquely hospitable small boutique inn, while feeling like it was the perfect setting for a private and intimate couples getaway. Our suite felt spacious and modern, yet cozy and was filled with nice touches like heated tile floors, book lights and binoculars in the drawers and warm blankets on the leather chairs. Views from our room, deck, and the main room and deck were gorgeous. The included breakfast and wine hour was absolutely perfect. We are foodies and were delighted by the delicious food. We enjoyed the opportunity to try amazing restaurants at lunchtime, but it was so nice to be able to have a morning and evening meal on the premises. Bento boxes were a delight and we enjoyed tasting 4-6 different wines. We loved playing scrabble and drinking hot tea by the big fireplace at night before turning in as well! The concierge service was so helpful in helping us experience amazing days out: highly recommend booking the sea cave kayaking trip at nearby Van Damme beach, going to the Botanical Garden, getting a meal at Princess Seafood in Noyo Harbor plus hiking from the trestle bridge in Fort Bragg and going all the way down to Glass Beach. I will say that our room (Redwood) was not very soundproof, and being adjacent to the main room, we woke up way too early for our liking on the first morning. We were thankful to get the one sound machine in the Inn for the rest of the trip, which made all the difference for good sleep!

We really wanted to like the Brewery Gulch. We had read lots of glowing reviews and magazine articles so we picked it for a birthday celebration. The location of the Inn is stunning. Our room had a beautiful view and a nice deck on which enjoy it. The room itself was just okay. There was too much furniture for the square footage and the bed was really uncomfortable. We both had sore necks and backs and were glad to return home. The breakfast was delicious with lots of choices, but we thought the happy hour/dinner setup was just weird. You needed to be there close to 5:30 or your food would be cold. We were there three nights and I would say one night was very good – the other two were so-so. (It’s a set meal so there is no choice although they do make adjustments for allergies.) It was three smallish courses so you didn’t feel like going out for dinner, but what else are you going to do in Mendocino after 6:00?
The biggest problem in our opinion is the thin walls between the rooms. Why hasn’t anyone else mentioned this in their reviews??? When you check in, they have you sign something about not playing any music devices so they know it’s an issue. We could hear voices from both sides whenever someone was in their rooms. We were kept awake all night by our neighbor’s snoring, but most distracting was the noise from the romantic adventures of our neighbors. We felt like we were in a cheap motel at exorbitant prices! At least they provide ear plugs, but why should you have to use them out in the middle of nowhere?

We're so sorry that your stay did not go as expected! That is truly unfortunate & we wish that you had said something during your stay so that we could've done our best to remedy the situation. We even have a way to call guests in their room directly if they're being noisy at any time. Alternatively, perhaps there could've been a different room for us to move you to that may have been more comfortable for everyone, all the way around. The majority of our guests tell us all the time how comfortable our beds are, so this comes as a bit of a surprise. We do our best to inform everyone of how our complimentary Wine Hour & light dinner works & it's true that although it's not for everyone at the timing of their choice, usually works for most of our guests in some form or another. Given that we serve this at an early-ish hour, we often suggest sharing one portion so that you still get to go out & enjoy the great local restaurants without ruining your appetite, but also don't have to miss out on what our Chef has to offer. We have been trying to work out the details of sound-proofing within the building, however, this task takes a lot of time, construction & closing down entirely or specific rooms/portions of the Inn. We've been so busy that doing so would most definitely cause some of our guests an inconvenience that is a lot to deal with, so finding the right timing for this major overhaul has been difficult. Please be aware that it's one of our top priorities when we can select a suitable time-frame to get it done. All that said, we do thank you for your valuable feedback & are sad to hear that you wouldn't recommend us. We hope that you at least enjoyed the Mendocino Coast while you're here & maybe some day in the future you'll consider giving us another chance. Please do take care & we wish you happy travels!

We spent three night at Brewery Gulch and could have stayed longer. Location is amazing - anyone complaining about barking harbor seals needs to just go home. Sara and her staff were outstanding. Inn and room were immaculate. Chef Stephen is top notch - breakfast is a must have, even for those toast and tea types, and the evening bento box is all you need for dinner - top quality ingredients, artfully prepared, fresh and perfectfully proportioned. Do not miss the morning snacks - we had lemon poppyseed muffins, coffee cake, and zucchini bread that would make you weep, they were that good. Izzy at the Front Desk in the afternoons pours lovely local wines and brews, and is patient with impatient, cocktail needy guests. Would stay here again in a heartbeat!
Mendocino is not easy to get to (we're talking to you Rte. 128) but Brewery Gulch is worth the trip!

After reading the great reviews, I’m so glad we stayed at BGI for a long weekend to attend a wedding. A quiet retreat located in a stunning location, our room was very comfortable with exquisite features. The view was great with a walkout patio overlooking the rugged coastline and visits from a small fox and hummingbirds. The Japanese soaking tub was a treat along with the quality bathroom amenities. The little fireplace was welcomed since the weather can get chilly. Having breakfast was a nice way to welcome in the day and loved the daily pastries and fresh fruits for the guests to enjoy with coffee and tea during the day. We unfortunately didn’t have the Wine entree because of meeting friends for dinner in town nightly. The menu did look inviting though. The staff was friendly, helpful in all ways to make our stay comfortable and welcoming. BGI is definitely a place I would recommend to friends and family because of the up-scale and exquisite quality amongst the beauty of Mother Nature.

I made a reservation to stay at Brewery Gulch in part for the opportunity have a meal from the chef at the inn that we really like and know from another inn. After we made the reservation we found out that the only chance to eat a meal from the chef was the "bento box" appetizer style snack offered. This felt like a bait and switch, the website did not communicate this and previously the full dining opportunity was available. I cancelled within 48 hours because of the lack of transparency from Brewery Gulch. They still charged me a $50 cancellation fee, even after I explained the situation. This hotel is on the "wrong side"of the highway. The dining experience is not commensurate with the price. The are other hotels nearby with much better dining experiences on the water.

We would like to apologize for any confusion regarding the dining options at the Inn. The bento boxes were a change that was made due to COVID restrictions a few years ago. The evening dining experience is highlighted on the dining portion of our website, accompanied by past examples of menu items. Guests also have the opportunity to enjoy breakfast with us off a served menu, which is also included in the room price. Our cancellation policy adheres to state mandates, and a copy of our policy is sent with every confirmation that is made. Again, we sincerely apologize for any displeasure experienced.

The food was amazing. The breakfast was great. My husband loves great coffee and prefers light roast. Their proprietary light roast coffee fit the bill. The appetizer dinners were big enough for a full dinner. We did not have to eat anything all day except a small snack. There is also fresh fruit available all day.
The room was comfortable so was the bed. I was surprised at all the amenities. There are plates, bowls, silverware, as well as cotton balls all available.
All the staff were friendly and helpful. We even met the owner. We are looking forward to going back.

As soon as we walked into Brewery Gulch, we felt right at home. The people who work there are genuinely friendly and helpful and happy to see you. The amenities are so thoughtful, from the bento box happy hour to the free drinks and snacks, they've thought of everything. It's a comfortable experience without being bougie which is exactly what we were looking for. The hotel is bigger than a typical B&B, so you don't feel like the rooms are on top of each other. But it's small enough to feel cozy, so it's the best of both worlds. My husband and I are both vegan, and they accommodated us so well with our own vegan bento box and a couple of different options for breakfast that are already on the menu. It's a relaxing and chill atmosphere but also warm and inviting. We would definitely go back again in the future!

No, there isn't a full service restaurant or bar. However, there is a menu for breakfast and it is prepared to order. It is amazing. And the light dinner includes a selection of wine and beer during the dinner hour. This is all included in the room price!!!!!
Hi there! There is some light traffic that goes by on the highway adjacent but usually isn't a huge noise issue, especially at night when our quiet rural area is mostly inactive. View is from atop a small hill looking west towards the ocean and Smuggler's Cove. Room tip, we have two and a half floors and the higher you go up, the better the view gets!
All rooms, except for two, have a shower over tub. The exceptions are one of our first floor queen rooms, Redwood, that has a barrier-free stall shower ( it is our ADA room), and the room next to it, a corner king (Manzanita). It has a one-person deep Japanese soaking tub and a separate stall shower.
There are more places to choose from in the Mendocino area.
