When Fess Parker purchased the 714-acre Foxen Canyon Ranch in 1988, he planned to run cattle, plant a few acres of vineyard, and perhaps, someday, establish a small winery. His dream was to start a family business that he could pass on to future generations.

Detailed Reviews
The hotel itself is located on the main drag of Los Olivos (a really cute little town) and you're within walking distance of 46 (ish) tasting rooms. As a guest, you also get a wine passport that offers discounts or free tastings at some of the nearby wineries, which was great. We had lunch and a dinner at Nella's and loved both meals. There are a few parking spots for hotel guests, but fortunately we were able to find close street parking when those were full. The pool is decent-sized and they have two gas fireplaces that they light up at night for guests to sit outside.
Where I'm really struggling with my review is that we booked the Epiphany Suite, which was the only room available for my husband's birthday weekend, and decided to go for the splurge ($750/night) since we hadn't traveled much during Covid. However, compared to other hotels where we've paid far less (Ritz Carlton, The Wynn), the amenities were lacking. First thing is that the suite (or at least the one we were in) was on the first floor and located just a few feet away from the main street, so I felt awkward opening my shutters since people were always walking by. And, we'd hear the noise from Nella's until they closed, since so many people dined outside (well past 10 on the weekends, which may bother early birds).
The first night, we had people stomping around above us (woke me up) and early in the morning. It came back that evening and then was quiet our last day. It was the kind of noise that you expect (maybe) in a vacation rental, but not a fancy hotel. We were only provided filtered jugs of water in our room for free -- no soft drinks or sparkling waters or even bottled waters to take on the road. As others have noted, there was no breakfast provided and I was really surprised that there was no hair dryer in the room, so it was one more thing I had to pack. The layout is also awkward as the suite is really the extra room for a "formal" living room that we never wanted to sit in (stiff, uncomfortable furniture) and we couldn't watch the TV from that far away on the bed. The bathroom has everything in the same room and only one vanity, so it was always the "dance" with my husband to be in there. And the shower pressure was so light that I'm not sure that my hair was ever fully clean.
But the real frustration was that we were from out of state and had to fly in, though fortunately, our airline does not charge to check wine as baggage. However, the hotel did not have any wine shipping boxes and even when we went to the Fess Parker Winery, they refused to sell us an extra box (even after telling them we were hotel guests and bought six bottles to ship directly home) and directed us to another winery down the street that sold us one for $8. Seriously, $750/night won't even allow us to purchase an $8 box?
Overall, we liked the hotel for its location, but if we come back, we would stay in the cheaper rooms, as there was no "benefit" to getting a suite except for having extra the space that we didn't need.

It was our first visit to Santa Ynez wine region and the Fess Parker proved to be the perfect place to stay. Located in the adorable town of Los Olivos, it made squeezing many tastings into a day possible, as all of the town's tasting rooms we within a 5 minute walk. The room was very nice and very comfortable. There's a nice pool and fitness center, although we didn't make use of either. Parking is included either in front of the hotel or in a small lot and we never had an issue finding a spot. We did have a small issue while we were there, but Amanda went above and beyond to make it right. There's currently no breakfast available on-site, but there are places within walking distance or a short drive away. The restaurant on-site Nella is fantastic (we'd also recommend their sister restaurant SY Kitchen which is less than 10 minutes away). Los Olivos is a great getaway for wine lovers and we would recommend the Fess Parker to anyone.

We have been trying to come up here again for months...
my husbands birthday celebration and our anniversary celebration were both cancelled due to the pandemic. When things started opening up again we decided to finally come.
A long time favorite place of ours, it did not disappoint. It’s quiet and always spotlessly clean. Very friendly service. The rooms were comfortable and quiet with perfect temperature control despite the heat outside.
Rooms were not cleaned daily but we had the option of fresh towels and trash being emptied. The fresh cookies were replaced by peanut brittle deliver to our rooms. No breakfast right now. And the restaurant is soft opening the weekend.
We love this place and hopefully will be returning soon!

I am puzzled by the reputation of this establishment because we were so profoundly disappointed. Overpriced, claustrophobic, no grounds or common areas other than a pool across the street (?), very few dining options nearby despite location in the center of town, and no shuttles to even their namesake vineyard. What kind of “wine country inn” does not provide safe transportation to their own winery? A bottle of wine and tasting room passes are, in fact, included, but the patio seems to belong more to a new restaurant on the ground floor than to the inn. The restaurant was actually quite good but we almost didn’t make the reservation list (the dearth of eating options would have been a good thing for the reservation agent to mention as we almost went to bed hungry). Perhaps the most egregious of all of the above flaws: The marketing (website etc). is highly misleading showing imagery of the vineyard itself as if the Inn is located on site when the two properties are miles apart without so much as a shuttle to connect them. Not a value in spite of the over-wrought appointments of a recent renovation. The staff tries their best with what they have to work with, but otherwise this property has nothing to recommend it.

We were booked to stay at the Fess Parker for 2 nights for an anniversary weekend and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The room was very nice, and we loved the pool and garden areas. the location in downtown Los Olivos also can't be beat. Unfortunately, on the morning of the second night of our stay, the entire Santa Ynez Valley lost power due a lightning storm. The staff was absolutely amazing - constantly checking in with guests to see how they were and what they could do to help. Amanda drove far out of town to bring in snacks to have at the front desk, and they were arranging for their chef to come in (their restaurant at the time was closed for remodeling) to cook dinner for guests that stayed because all of the restaurants in the area were closed because of the outage. It was a sweltering weekend due to a strange California-wide heat wave, and they had wine on ice, which they were pouring for guests in the lobby and at the pool. We were incredibly impressed with them, and while we were sad we had to cut our stay short, we will absolutely be back.

We were in the suite on the main road. The space is gorgeous and the room is perfectly thought through. However it is dark because to open the shutters would be to invite the passing world into your room. At the price point there is no outside space but the pool area is so convenient it is impossible to mark down for this.
However at night the noise from the restaurants outside and the people (elephants?) above and in the hallway would be an absolute dealbreaker to return.
We enjoyed going 10 minutes out of town for the ‘free’ tasting at the Fess Parker winery. Adrienne was amazing and has enthusiasm levels rarely met in the UK. Thank you.
Love the room. Location is great fun for a short stay. But Napa it is not.

My wife and I travel a great deal, and live in Italy part of each year, but our home is in Santa Barbara. And because of Covid have not gone to a restaurant or a hotel in the last six months. So when we returned again, as we have again and again, to the Fess Parker Wine Country Inn we were overwhelmed by the cleanliness, the warm and caring attention of the staff, and by the chance to sit socially distanced outside by the pool, and we repeatedly counted our blessings. You will too. This is the absolute best location and a touch of heaven in Los Olivos. When you are ready to treat yourself well, well here is the place to go.. And BTW the now open Nella restaurant in the garden served us the best meal we've had outside of Firenze. A place to sleep heavenly, and eat heavily, and did I mention how many places to drink great wine. Go for it! You deserve it.

While this a beautiful hotel in the quaint village of Los Olivos, they are no longer offering a breakfast option at the hotel which at this price point is embarrassing. Instead, they tell you to go elsewhere which means to the one place in Los Olivos that has breakfast which was not good or if you want to drive they mentioned a couple but those weren't open during our visit. They should at least offer their guests a continental breakfast. I understand that Covid has complicated things for everyone but this seems just like cost cutting effort... Rethink staying here and instead stay at one of the close by B&Bs that do offer breakfast options.

We found this hotel to be the perfect setting for a quick getaway. We stayed in a Grand Spa room that was comfortable and spacious. Features included two arm chairs in a well-lit corner, a nice desk, and a fireplace. The windowed bathroom was ample sized with a large walk in shower. We stayed in the west building which is across the main street of the town from the other half of the hotel. We did not find this arrangement bothersome at all. The road is never really that busy so it is easy to cross. In addition to rooms, the west building has a small windowless gym and a very nice pool with loungers and seating areas in an attractive courtyard setting.
The east side is where you will find a small lobby, library room, cute breakfast room, and Nella, the hotel’s popular and tasty restaurant. Upon check in we were given a booklet full of information and discounts to the local wineries and businesses. There was also a complimentary bottle of house wine in our room to enjoy. Besides a very good dinner at Nella on the front patio, the simple free breakfast hit the spot.
We have enjoyed visiting the idyllic town of Los Olivos for years but this was our first overnight visit. Staying at the Fess Parker fit right in with the low key charming vibe of the town and enhanced our stay by providing a nice upscale bed and breakfast environment.
There is no resort or parking fees which is a rare treat that we appreciated.

Situated in the quaint little burg of Los Olivos hard by Solvang and the wine trail, the accommodations are luxe and the staff superb. Checked in over the xmas holidays and everything is open and abuzz. Convenient to all the little nearby towns and on the Main Street you can enjoy your room and a stroll. Great breakfast was included. Highly recommend as we had 2 fireplaces to enjoy on our rainy nights after doing the wineries and a hike up Figueroa Mountain.

You can walk to many wineries and tasting rooms in town. We drove but you can Uber etc
Per their policy at this point in time, they do not allow pets. Sorry about that.
We were in Room #5 on the second floor, which is on the back side, very quite and very spacious with a fireplace with a nice seating area by the window. It was very comfortable.
Yes, the entire property is non-smoking.
