We stayed here between Christmas and the New Year. We decided to splurge on the Penthouse, which is a great space with one major issue: elevator noise. The penthouse is on the top floor of the hotel, right next to the roof garden/pool/bar, but also right next to the elevator machinery.
Every time one of the elevators would start, run or stop, the machinery would make noise. It was by no means a deafening noise, but loud enough to be disturbing and to keep us awake at night. Luckily, the elevators stop being used much during the middle of the night so we were able to get some sleep then. I searched for other penthouse reviews on here but no one had mentioned the elevator noise. We complained about it twice to the front desk, while also knowing that that they could not really do anything about it. (All the staff we interacted with were excellent, though.)
On the plus side, the penthouse has a huge outdoor patio (photo below) and a nice living room that can also open onto the patio during nice weather.
Another plus here was a daily happy hour in the lobby with a free beverage such as a glass of wine.
When we booked this, we thought we were booking the Kimpton Palomar in Westwood, which is also on Wilshire and where we had stayed once before. But we ended up really enjoying the location of this one more than the Westwood location. We were able to walk to the L.A. County Museum of Art, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, and places like the Grove shopping center and the Holocaust Museum. We also walked to the Beverly Center and parts of Beverly Hills.
Due to the presence of street people in the area we would not have done much walking at night, but there were several very good casual restaurants close by (The Alchemist Cafe, Tawanna Thai, and Rocco's Pizza).
We will definitely stay here again-- just not in the Penthouse.

It doesn’t look like much from the outside and the lobby isn’t much, but the Kimpton Wilshire is a really nice hotel. Our room was decent sized and quiet. Love the rooftop pool, it’s such a nice place to have breakfast, and our server was friendly and fast. Also enjoyed the cold brew in the coffee room. Big shoutout to Carolina at the front desk who was so helpful about a couple of special requests, as well as Luis from Signature Parking, which handles the valet service. Only gave it four stars as the pool got really crowded with people who were not hotel guests. They showed up early and parked themselves on the lounges all day so we never got to use them. Perhaps they couldn’t aside a few for guests? The music is really loud too, which is too bad as the pool would otherwise be a great place to chill.

Very convenient location for visiting cedar Sinai for medical appointments. My husband and I had a long drive and arrived late in the evening. Crystal suggested we order room service before the restaurant closed so we would have a nice meal and relax and not have to run around trying to find a decent place to eat. She also advised us that we qualified for a late checkout so we could rest after my husband’s procedure before returning home. I felt like she was family and she really cared about us. I will definitely book future stays here.

First, I would stay away from all Kimpton. Their business model is to do new finishes on existing , out of date buildings. You will never get adequate lighting, electrical or water pressure. My stay at the Kimpton at wilshire now takes the crown for the worst hotel ever. We arrived around noon and asked off there was room ready, they said wait a few minutes. We dropped our stuff off and went for thanksgiving dinner. We can back exhausted and crawled into bed, but my husband noticed a "stain" on his side. we were so tired we didn't do anything about it. The next dayI wondered if the sheets were changed, stain was still there and found more. On close examination, we both had blood stains near us and the sheets were never washed. So slept in sheets with bio hazard from another person! when i asked if the sheets could be changed, the housekeeper came up to the room and handed me the sheets to change myself. We asked to change rooms after that and the next room also had dirty sheets. Finally the 3rd one was not soiled. there are so many things about this hotel that makes you feel like you are sleeping in a toilet, but soiled sheets from the previous guest tops them all. Just stay away if you value your health.

The hotel is fine, I guess. Clean enough, relatively nice-ish. But the service - well that’s another thing. Housekeeping: you need to be out of the room by 9:30 AM or they will not make up the room. My first day I missed that window. The next day I was out in time and returned at 5 PM and they hadn’t started it yet. Twice I called down to the front desk for different reasons, and both times it rang and rang with no answer. And there is no way to call ahead and request your car from valet. Probably should skip this one.

Booked this with airline points - it was a good deal, even better if you upgraded to a suite, which are quite large. First, the not-so-great: valet parking (the only option) is $55 a day, which is nuts even in LA. And like many Kimptons, the once cool design is a bit faded. But to a person the staff were over and above: friendly at check in and when I was about to buy a beer they reminded me that there was a free wine tasting going on. The the bartender ( maybe Megan) was super friendly and helpful, The next morning Christophe was even better at breakfast, which is one of the better priced (a full continental breakfast was $12) in LA, with a beautiful hidden rooftop view of the Hollywood Hills . Staffing made this a worthwhile stay.

Great location, great service, great amenitites, just.....
The blackout curtains do not keep light out, not even at night (room 604).
The complimentary breakfast is good, but is obvious that the staff in the morning is overwhelmed by the amount of people at breakfast. Ends up being a little messy
Incredibly expensive parking

Very disappointed with the response from the hotel staff. Be prepared ! I made my booking online for a room with one king and one queen bed. Upon checking into my room, the room only had one bed, I immediately called the front desk and advise them of my reservation for two beds. They said that room was all they had available and could no longer accommodate me for two beds. I could try another hotel if I wanted. I paid for a double room and did not receive any compensation for the single bed room This cost a big inconvenience, since I was traveling with family. Then, on my checkout day, I left my iPhone charger plugged in the wall, I realized within an hour that I had forgotten my charger, call the hotel and asked if I could come back and pick it up. Front desk did not let me, and said they would advise housekeeping. I have filed a claim, call the hotel every day, tried trying to get my charger back, however, I was told that it was not in the room. Very uncooperative staff! Other than that, hotel has a very nice roof top restaurant and bar. But so does the Marriot 1 block away.

Stays on IHG points are NOT welcome here. They give you the worst room and make it sound you got an upgrade. In our case a 1BR suite on the second floor with 6 feet wall in front of all windows and many things broken. A room that's dark during the day and bright during the night (bright spot lights from neighboring building). When asked to switch room the front desk person went to her manager chit chatting for 10min. Then the front desk manager Sammie Kahkola came out and said we don't have anything else. She was flat out lying or let's say just not capable of organizing a room switch. We checked in at 1:30PM and said we could wait for later. Any bed variation is fine. She said no can do and you have to stay in that room. To which I said so no other guests are checking in for the rest of the day. "Oh of course more guests are coming". Now the best part. The blinds were broken in that room (see my note about bright lights above) and lamp next to bed broken as well. When pointing it out they didn't even bother to send someone. The already knew the blinds are broken. When I followed up the 2 Horus later they said oh the engineer said it can't be fixed. Still no other room or hotel switch offered. We left the next day. First time a front desk manager is refusing to do anything about the situation. It was obvious from their action that a guest stying on points is not worth their time. I should mention Platinum status doesn't mean anything here as well but seems to be an IHG thing.

I travel a metric boat load all over and use IHG exclusively. I was introduced to the Kimpton brand during the acquisition some years back. I’ve been an avid fan ever since. Any chance I get to stay at a Kimpton property is seized upon with enthusiasm.
This property is compact. It does try very hard to fulfill the broad Kimpton palette. Staff were always polite and efficient. The social password netted me a nice goody bag. Thanks for that! The Spire level got me the Santa Monica suite at a regular room rate.
The lobby is small. The two elevators are likewise small. I’m a stout fellow of six foot and 250 pounds and broad shoulders. I had to enter sideways to ride those cars. The second floor breakfast area is small — but the spread that is put out is rather decent for the fourteen dollars they charged. The social password got me a comp’d breakfast.
The suite was nice and payed out well. The absence of an ice machine is a little odd. Bagged ice does feel somewhat downmarket. I’m sure it’s not the first time you’ve heard that comment. Decor is well kept-up and the carpets on my floor must have been freshly vacuumed, because there was the most lovely lavender scent wafting through those halls.
The shower was huge. Space for a quartet to sing in. The toiletries are always a nice collection. The bed was a delight - soft and cushy. Slept well.
The location was good for a morning run too. The LaBrea Tar Pita are just four blocks away. Should let you know that the area does have a lot of homeless around. Nobody too obnoxious bothered me on my wanderings.
Valet is quick and efficient. If business brought me back to this side of LA — the Wilshire would make the short list despite the small footprint.

Kimpton's were the first hotel chain to really allow dogs so I am sure if you ask they will be able to direct you to non-pet room. Generally speaking and again you need to ask at this property dog-friendly rooms are on the first floor or near the elevators

Breakfast is available in the rooftop restaurant, but there is no buffet. It is not included. The only complimentary thing is the wine hour. Not worth it. Seriously, don't stay here.
