Detailed Reviews
These are the two outstanding features of this retreat. The Surprise Valley is beautiful high desert, serene and quiet. Wildlife abounds. The private and personal tubs of mineral spring water is a delight. The accommodations were disappointing. We booked a "Luxury"room for two nights. The full kitchen was bare bones. Most cabinets were empty. There were a few missed matched dishes, only one large pot and several pans. There were no paper towels or tissues. The shower was small and the toilet area even smaller with saloon type half doors. Both are in the bedroom. The bath towels were very good quality. The living room/kitchen area had a swamp cooler. It was inadequate to cool the area let alone the bedroom. There is no WiFi or TV. The flat screen TV in the room is only to play DVDs. Yes, the rooms have seen better days. Repairs were shoddy and there was deferred maintenance. What is needed is a deep cleaning and renovation. We come to star gaze and watch the meteor showers but will find another clean, well maintained facility.

We spent 2 fall week nights here recently. I was quite wary after reading all the negative reviews. However, unit 5 (African theme) exceeded my expectations. It was clean, if a bit funky, with a long bathroom in between the bedroom and the living room. The outdoor tub was right outside the bedroom. Water flows in and out constantly. It seemed clean. They provide towels for the bathroom and hot tub. You can easily adjust the water temperature and soak all day and night. The tap water is cold and delicious.
There is nothing, and I mean nothing, nearby. So take all your food, including salt and pepper, and you'll be fine. They provide an odd assortment of dishes, utensils, and pots and pans. Nice full refrigerator and stove with an oven. Bring a hairdryer and hangers if you use them. Also, the units are quite dark, with a variety of small lights. There is no cable TV, but they provide an assortment of DVDs. The bed was comfortable.
The weirdest aspect of this unit was the heat. You can't adjust it or turn it off, and even in November it was pretty warm at night. So you need to run the fan, which brings in the cool outdoor air, or open the windows.
If you are looking to escape civilization, this is your place. Tiny Cedarville is 6 miles away and there is a grocery store, coffee shop, and a few restaurants we didn't try. We assumed there was no internet as per the website. And no spa.
The grounds are pretty, but goose poop is everywhere, so tread cautiously.
I would never book here in the summer.
Very reasonably priced, and you'll be happy if you're not expecting the usual chain motel accommodations. Mountains nearby provide beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

Even if Suite 20 is the only one available and will save you money over two motel rooms, you might not want to stay in it for the simple reason that you cannot control the heating. Even on cold November nights that's a big problem. The instructions tell you to open the windows. That almost works in one bedroom but you have to shut the window to sleep because the noisy hot springs water system is right outside. In the other bedroom you cannot open any windows or the French doors. Another probelm was that the people above us were noisy until gone 3am the first night. At my request the manager spoke with them and they were considerate the next night. The suite is huge, with comfy beds and sofas and it's really a great place, out in the desert with coyotes howling. I just wish I'd had a motel room.

We have been here many times. We come with another couple and get one of the 2 bedroom suites. This last time the second bedroom stated it had a queen. It does not, that is a double size bed not a queen. But, that didn't matter... the room was so f***ing hot we couldn't sleep in it. There is no window to open and the door to the outside was locked permanently. We talked to the staff the next morning to see if we could get the door open to cool it off. We were told the owners don't want to do that because a pipe froze? What? How in the heck did a pipe freeze in the room hot as h***? Of course we would close the door before anything froze because we are humans and don't want to freeze to death either. He then proceeded to tell us there was a fan in the room. We told him that we know this, and despite there being a fan, the room was still too hot. Also, we mentioned that locking the door like that, to the outside world, is against fire code. He proceeded to tell us how the building would never burn down because, well, there are hot springs around, and nothing can burn with that much water around. WTF? Anyway, room 20 sucks! We have never had any issues with a room that wasn't taken care of for us, or any issues with owners or employees in the past, but this last trip was actually awful, as far as the staff and the room.

I recommended the resort to a friend who brought a 100 year old lady. They booked room #20, the AC didn't cool the room. My friend slept on the floor because none of the windows opened. She was so hot. Asked for some sort of discount, was told the owner said they don't give discounts. The place gets a lot of business, they should do some updates and make the rooms cool and comfortable.

I’ve read reviews by other people and all I can say is, those folks just don’t get it. I’ve stayed here multiple times with my dog and every time I’ve had a great experience. The silence alone is worth the $. It’s the setting and the environment that is the beautiful parts here, not the room. The room is basic. It’s clean, it’s super warm due to the hot water piped through the walls. I slept with both doors wide open while it was snowing outside—BEAUTFIUL!! If you care about thread count, don’t stay here. If you want to hike all day in the high desert, then soak in a natural hot spring while staring at a million stars above, this is your spot.

This is unique serene place, very quiet. Relaxing. However, the room we stayed at was gross. Inches of dust everywhere! I had a spray cleaner from our road trip and I cleaned every surface, even picture frames as I didn’t want to look at dust. Toilet was disgusting, I cleaned with paper towel and spray and it was brown. This room hasn’t seen a deep cleaning in years. The AC unit had 1/4 in dust and dead bugs, we had to shake it out. The bug screen in one off the windows was missing and there are ton of bugs! Fridge was very dirty. We used our own pillows, as theirs is so old and provides no support. Mattress is old and squeaky. Patio furniture was very dirty. This place needs lots of love and cleaning! Otherwise, it would have been an amazing experience! Please make it enjoyable for your guests!

So, I reserved a spot for the 1st of January and canceled the 22nd of December. Nearly the 14 day holiday cancellation policy and these people want to accept my cancel and not refund me a cent for those days. I’m totally disgusted with these people and the constant policy change for their establishment. Given the reason I had to cancel, you would think this establishment would have enough compassion to consider that, but no. I’m absolutely disgusted. I will never recommend this place again, they are not family or morally considerate. Such a shame. Also, they are extremely difficult to get in touch with and I couldn’t get a response for days in a row. Such a shame.

I stayed here because of a family reunion in the area. It was during a time that the temperature reached closed to 100 with only room air conditioners. One bedroom didn't have air and my friends had to sleep on the floor in the living room.

We arrived to find Room 20 hot and humid due to the large hot spring fed hot tub. The smaller of two bedrooms had a small AC unit that was pulling in sulphur smell from the hot spring fountain just outside. The larger bedroom did not have AC, but opening the window meant sulphur smell. We had planned a 3 night stay, but after a sleepless night we left after one night.
The purpose of our trip was to see the Dark Sky Sanctuary in Nevada. After a long drive on a gravel road, about 10 miles in the BLM lands, we never found a turnout or view spot or sign. Sky was too cloudy to see stars.
