We were recommended to visit the Cypress Inn and we were not disappointed. It was just delightful and seemed from a different era. Known because it's doggie friendly we counted 13 dogs on our two night stay. It was so interesting how dogs bring people together and the conversations that began because of the dogs. However it was spotless and the staff were very helpful. There is live music four nights a week but unfortunately not the nights we were there.

We would definitely stay again if we were in the area.

We loved our recent 3 night stay here! We stayed in room 116 which allowed us a secondary private street entrance, convenient when exiting with our dog. The atmosphere on Saturday was lively, with dogs everywhere and live entertainment in the lobby salon. We found the staff friendly and accommodating. The breakfast served daily in the bar was very good, with fresh fruit & yogurt, sausage, eggs and potatoes, as well as delicious daily baked pop overs in addition to the usual breakfast pastries.
As the hotel is old hacienda style, there was some noise transmitted through the walls, but everything was quiet after 11 pm and as the bed was very comfortable, we slept well every night. The gas fireplace was a welcome addition as the nights were cool. The towels were excellent and the toiletries were high quality Gilchrist & Soames. A complimentary carafe of sherry was a nice touch.
The on-site Terry’s restaurant was also a welcome addition. We enjoyed lunch on the patio one day and ordered room service another day as well.
The only negative for us was the parking situation, which made check in a bit taxing. Luckily, as the immediate on-street parking around the hotel is a strictly enforced 2 hr limit(there is unlimited on street parking 2 blocks away)we were able to find spots that worked for us.

I can’t express how joyful and rewarding it feels to see your dog run and play with new “friends” on the beach, and how relaxing it is to enjoy the beautiful soft sand of Carmel beach between your toes!

This is the third time we have stayed at the hotel. The last two visits we had a lovely large room with a fireplace. This visit we were in a very small room, you could sit on the toilet and wash your hands at the same time. Not counter space to set our toiletries on, had to use the floor. It was very noisy. you can hear every word people were saying in the other room and the outside noise is unbearable. The hotel is dog friendly but we saw a man get bit and a lot of dog that were unfriendly and barked every time someone walked bye.

We have been coming to Carmel for years and were so excited to finally stay at Cypress Inn. However, our room on the first floor right across the public bathroom and the bar was very noisy. We were told that public restrooms close at 9pm but people kept looking for them anyways after that time and banging on doors.

Also, even though the bar and restaurant close at some point, people keep meandering around past closing and it sounded like we had a whole bar in our room at 11pm. We were moved to the second floor for the next night but we were still above the bar area and the noise was better than on floor 1 but still loud enough to keep us up. When we were being moved to another room, I was immediately concerned that it was still above the busy bar but we were told it would be better since it's one floor up, but that didn't help much. I wish they put us in a room on the other end of the hallway but overall staff didn't seem very concerned or apologetic.

The location of Cypress Inn is perfect, breakfast above average, and I love that they have cute dogs everywhere but I don't think it's asking for too much to be able to sleep while on a relaxing getaway to a sleepy place like Carmel.

We booked an upgraded suite at the Cypress Inn. Our bad experience started when we attempted to park our car. The valet was rude to us and wouldn't provide any parking information. We checked in, and the girl at the front desk was flippant and uninterested in our questions. She pointed to our room and let us figure out the rest. The room was extremely old, heated only by a noisy and dangerous radiator (hello, it's 2019!!) The worst part was that the walls, doors and windows are paper thin. We were woken up repeatedly for various reasons, like drunk partiers, drug dealers, and honking delivery trucks at 2am. The front desk was not helpful at all, only offered a 10% discount. For a night of no sleep and even compromised safety, this is unacceptable.

Our most recent stay here was horrible. We paid $500/night to stay in what was labeled as a luxury suite, but turned out to be a shoe closet. The cleaning staff left our doors unlocked each day and the WiFi was down for most of our trip, with no warning to any of the guests. Horrible experience!!

Our second stay at the historic Cypress Inn in Carmel. This 1920's vintage hotel is located in the heart of downtown Carmel and is easy walking distance to most attractions and restaurants. However, the beach is downhill about 1/2 mile from the hotel so expect a trudge to get back.

As you may know, this hotel was co-owned by Doris Day and it retains her empathy for animals and is very dog friendly. Expect to see well-mannered dogs under the tables in the restaurants. There is also a collection of memorabilia honoring this under-appreciated actress.

We chose a one bedroom suite and it was certainly worth the extra expense compared to a standard room. Our 2nd floor suite was comfortable, spacious with vaulted ceilings, and a gas fireplace. However, there is a tall step to get in and out of the deep soaking tub / shower combo. Beware if you have mobility issues.

An ample breakfast is included in room rate including hot dishes. Baked popovers appear at 8:30am and they are a popular item.

We stayed in Room 102 for 3 nights. Nice room, clean. The adjoining room (103) had a lady that played her TV loudly every night all night. Yelling through the wall did not help, nor did telling the front desk on the morning of 2nd day. If that type of activity is allowed, Cypress Inn needs to invest in better sound-proofing. Thanks to white-noise app on phone. Staff did a great job storing our bicycles and bringing them out when needed. Very dog friendly, lots of well-behaved dogs around. Very limited parking

Great staff and nice room. Eating outside was comfortable with the tent and heaters. Fireplace in room was very useful because it was cold outside. Breakfast was included, good and included sausage and scrambled eggs.

The Cypress Inn is full of charm and it has a great location in the town. If you have a pet, it is extremely pet friendly.
Now the other side of coin based on my experience. First, in our room we can hear everything that goes on in the hallway.
Our room (and I assume the hotel) is not air conditioned. When we arrived the windows were all opened and the room was a bit chilly so I closed the windows. The room then got too hot so I opened the windows again. Noise from outside doesn't bother me during the day but you better be prepared to sleep with random noise coming in from outside. If you're a light sleep you're not going to enjoy it.
Parking is an issue. The hotel has 9 reserved parking spaces and they're on a first come first served basis. Beyond that, you're on your own. The area around the hotel is 2 hour only parking during the day; just a few blocks away you can find parking in the residential area.
Finally, it is a pet friendly hotel. There will be pets everywhere. One thing we didn't think about is that when you sit in the common areas (breakfast area, bar or lounge area) you're going to pick up at least some pet hair on your clothes. We didn't get a lot but our clothes did pick up some as the pets are on the furniture.
So, if parking, noise, lack of AC and pet hair isn't a problem for you, you'll find this to be a great hotel as it really is cute.

I didn’t see any cats either but then I imagine that if there are any they probably wouldn’t have liked being in the common area with all the dogs. I’d also call the Inn and ask.

The hotel is set downtown but does have grass/trees all around. Off-site is literally 3 meters Their sister hotel is Lamp Lighter is also dog friendly. They are dog friendly and have some rooms with private patios/small yard. Cypress is amazing.
Answer from Susan R

I stayed at the Cypress with a dog, but the place is extremely clean and not at all kennel-like. In my opinion, the dogs add to the charm of the place, but it is wonderful without a dog. The dogs are not all over the furnishings, however they are around the bar area and sometimes the outside area of the restaurant. It's an upscale place- impeccably clean and well-run- there would never be dog poop anywhere - ever.
