We stayed at the Olathang cottage for 3 nights. Absolutely loved my stay. Everything about the hotel is top notch --- location, staff, warmth, hospitality and the food. The views of Paro valley from the cottage is spectacular. The cottage had all modern amenities & toiletries. The temperature was low single digits when we were there. There was adequate heating provision, including 2 room heaters in each cottage.

The staff is very warm & welcoming, especially at the restaurant. They took special care of the entire family. We just loved it. Will come back again.

Great property, wonderful views and love the history behind the resort. Built for the Kings coronation, it is the oldest hotel in Bhutan. Set among pine trees, wish rooms in the main building and warm log cabins with great beds! The staff are friendly, and food was decent. I would come back again.

I really enjoyed spending my one day quarantine at this hotel. The room was huge and very rustic (in a good way). I had amazing views over Paro from my cabin and the food was good (and great portions)! I’m a bit sad I won’t be staying here on the way back!

When you travel to Bhutan, you need a tour guide who will arrange for all your needs (hotel, meals, van with driver, and a tour guide) This is how the country operates (low volume and hi quality) and it works. Its all a set price of $200/day per person. So the key is to get a good tour guide who will set up your hotels, arrange for the best restaurants, and lead you on a wonderful cultural tour. I recommend Bhutan Scenic Tours owned by Tshering Dorji. All I can say is he did an incredible job making this the trip of a lifetime. If you are interested in fly fishing, rafting, or golf, he can arrange it. Bring your hiking boots cause there are a couple of hikes to very scenic spots. The only downside was the beds in all the hotels are very hard. The Olathong is the best hotel in Paro. They have a nice bar and you meet very interesting people from all over the world. There is big construction happening in Paro. They just opened the Aman Resort which is a hi end resort but I don't know anything about it and there are 2 other hi end hotels/resorts almost finished so the Olathong Hotel might be old news but Tshering will point you in the right direction. If you go through a middleman, your cost will go up depending on the markup cause they must secure a tour guide and send him the money. The easiest way to get to Paro is via Bankok since they issue visa at the airport in Bankok. If you go throug India, you will need an Indian visa before you travel. Your tour company will arrange for your Bhutan visa when you commit to the trip by sending them the money for the entire Bhutan stay. This is how it is. The best time to travel is in the spring (May and June) or the fall (Sept and Oct). That way you miss the winter and the rainy season. You will never forget this one.

Hotel Olathang was built in 1974 and looks rather tired! There are two kinds of rooms, smaller rooms in the main building. These are rather dark and gloomy and possibly noisy depending on how many people are staying. Or a two bedroom cottage in the grounds. The rooms are slightly larger and some have nice views of the valley below. The bathrooms are a bit tired and old but the main discomfort comes from the incredibly hard beds. I suggest you bring an air mattress with you if you want a decent night's sleep. The light isn't too good so if you dont want to strain your eyes you might like to bring a torch. The TVs offer a few English language channels which is helpful because there isnt much to do in the evenings!

The hotel has two very slow computers that connect to the internet but you'll find it will take you about 30 mins to send a brief email which is frustrating.

The food is buffet style and offers a reasonable choice of dishes.

The facilities are great. The rooms have good heaters so the kid won't have any problem. The buffet breakfast spread is great. Ask your travel agent to give you a package inclusive of breakfast. The staff are well behaved and will help you whenever they can. I'm not aware of any children specific facility. But the rooms are great. Just take a note that the property is spread out if you take a cottage and you might need to walk a bit. Contact Destiny Bhutan if you haven't got a travel agent yet. It's a local Travel Agent and the rates are very reasonable and the services are great. Call Deepak Gurung for more details 0097517609996

Do they ( hotel ) provide Indian Veg Food ?
Answer from Simon S

Most if not all tourist hotels in Bhutan seem to offer variations of buffet-style dishes. There was both meat and vegetable dishes and as far as I remember there were a majority of indian-inspired dishes. Some of the dishes are a bit bland so that they can be eaten by most people, but at least when we were there they also served various chilli-dishes including a version of Ema Datse (chili and cheese) Also lots and lots of rice :)
