A wonderful, traditional YHA with all the benefits that come with it! Great, great accommodation, food and atmosphere - then add absolutely incredible scenery, great access to Striding Edge and other delights if the Lakes. A great, great place for families, walkers, climbers and YHA enthusiasts. Thanks to the YHA team at Helvellyn and beyond - highly highly recommended.

Nothing had really changed since my last visit & review two years ago. Comfy, generally well-equipped, with a very good drying room. The location is excellent, about a mile and a half up the valley from the village and at the foot of the path up Helvellyn. The perennial problem of modern YH's lacking hand-laundering facilities is eased here for...

It had been 30 years since I stayed here and was pleasantly surprised to discover a bar, an evening meal served at 7.30, and a great value breakfast needs booking the night before £6.25 for juice, cereal, tea/coffee, toast, bacon egg sausage tomato beans and hash brown sets you up for a day on the hills. Accommodation is still basic...

This is a nice little hostel located up a small track on the slopes of Helvellyn. It is clean, with small functional rooms and hot water showers. It is only 10 minutes by car into Glenridding if you desire more dining options that the set menu offered by the hostel. Exactly what you expect from a YHA place.

This YHA has had mixed reviews but I really enjoyed the stay on the warmest weekend of the year so far. It's perfect for Helvellyn, catstycam, whiteside and Raise. Location on the Ullswater beck is really nice too and just 30 mins walk from Glenridding. On the downside it's a bit cramped when busy as it sleeps about 70 I...

Stayed one night in this YHA for a hiking trip around Helvellyn. It served it's purpose perfectlly. Very basic so don't expect any frills. Warm shower, cooked meal or self-catering, warm cosy beds and armchairs - all much needed after a day on the mountains. Location wise it is situated mid-way up the vale running glenridding to Helvellyn. Fantastic spot.

I went in the hostel with a friend of mine on july. The hostel is lovely, nice and clean. There is a fancy lounge where relax and play board games, very clean toilets and showers. It's very cheap as well! The only few things not quite right are the absence of a wifi connection, that with the complete absence of...

The location may appeal but the hostel itself is shabby and run down. Some of the furniture such as the sofas were so old, I have honestly seen better stuff at the council dump (see photo). Shower facilites are extremely basic with no space for belongings whilst you shower. Food service is very basic - no choice of menu or...

Although this YHA seems to be ideal from a location perspective (being right at the foot of Helvellyn) the hostel itself seems to be worn, tired and run down. We only stopped there for one night as we passed through but felt like the place could have done with a bit of money spending on it. Toilet seats were broken...

“As this is small hostel, there are limited toilet and shower rooms so you might want to ask how far away your room is from the men's or women's or you may have a long walk in the middle of the night.”
