This is a beautiful resort in an amazing location. This is our second 10 day stay at this location because the beach is fantastic and we love to walk it in the mornings. You can walk a couple of miles in either direction as the sand is easy to walk on. This location is one of many resorts, so there are a lot of tourists around that made us feel safe.
The main pool is awesome, very big and has many different depths, which makes it great for all ages of children. Good use more shade though as the sun can get intense in the afternoons.
The buffets were good and have an excellent amount of variety. The pool bar has burgers, hot dogs, fries, ice cream, which our teenaged kids loved.
However, we were disappointed regarding some issues on our second visit. It seems that they are very understaffed this year in the a la cartes and housekeeping. In the a la carte restaurants, we would wait 15-20 minutes for someone to take our drink order, then wait another 15-20 minutes for someone to take our dinner order. We would wait over 20 more minutes for them to clear supper dishes, and only had dessert and coffee once in four visits as it was too long to wait. There was one waiter for 10 tables, so, I do not believe that this was from a lack of effort, just not enough staff for the number of people in the restaurant. When we visited in 2018, the service was superior in the restaurants. When we were switching our room on the Saturday to our one bedroom suite, it was not available until 5:30pm. We did not have a room for over 8 hours. When we inquired regarding the delay, we were told that they were short staffed in housekeeping. When we did get our suite, we were very happy that it was beautiful and clean.
For the most part, the staff tried very hard to ensure our family had a good experience. They are friendly and hard working people. We just know that what we experience in 2020, was not as good as it was in 2018 and being an experienced traveller, this was due to not enough staff.
The grounds are impeccable, very clean. The beaches are dragged every morning to get the debris off of the sand.

This hotel was amazing and perfect for our long weekend! We have previously stayed at the other Barcelo Occidental location (Caribe), and booked this hotel instead for our winter getaway. We arrived before the 3pm check-in, but Julian, the Bell Boy, helped us get a room earlier (within the hour of arrival) and ensured the hotel made our stay extra special since it was my boyfriend's 30th birthday. They delivered Champagne to our room DAILY and have special treats every day. At first, our room had issues with the AC. When we called guest service to complain, they sent a technician within 5 minutes. Then, when I went to front desk to complain again because it was still warm and the AC was not working, they told me they already had a different room ready for us and would send someone up within 10 mins to help us relocate to the other room. They actually upgraded us at no cost. Julian also helped get reservations for the restaurants when Guest Services could not. It is a perfect location for excursions and easy to get to downtown Punta Cana. I would say, don't book your excursions before hand as the hotel has similar prices and services as other providers like Expedia, and can do additional discounts if you ask. The only improvement they would need is the food. I would have liked more traditional Dominican food (criolla). Also, ditch the disposable plastic cups. Not only reusable plastic cups are better for the environment but they also add a level of sophistication. I would recommend this hotel to my friends, and would stay again!

The Occidental Punta Cana from the Barcelo Group of Hotels / Resort is a good upkeep resort. Grounds are very clean and well maintained. Beachfront is one of the best I have been in the Dominica Republic. The resort every morning cleans the beach of any overnight seaweed that wash up and they rake the beach. The beach is wide and long so you don't seem crowed.

Their staff are very friendly and if you provide them a tip the added value they provide is even better. You don't need to Tip every time but they get many Russian Nationalists during January and February, they seem not to tip and Canadians and Americans always seem to be tipping more frequently and the staff seems to provide a better service to them.

I was in Block 24 which is very close to the beach and main pool. The rooms are spacious and modern. Bathrooms are shower only so if you are looking for bathtub I am not sure they have one. The resort was not very pushing when it came to their timeshare or vacation club. I don't think you need to spend the extra on the Royal Level. Rooms are bigger but not worth the price difference.

The main buffet was nice and the seating very modern. A good selection of food, but very repetitive. After the third day got bored with the selection. They also had beachfront Buffet but there the selection was even less. As for the Al-cart restaurants you need to book these right when you arrive as the time slots fill up very quickly. I went to the Italian, Steak House and Mexican. I would avoid Italian as its waste of time. The Steak House and Mexican were ok. On another note even though they had a dress code this rule was not enforced which disappointed me. Too many many men came in with shorts and sandals.

The Nightly entertainment was ok but the music that was played in the lobby bar was really good in the early part of the evening.

One more note WiFi is not free anywhere on the resort. They wanted 45USD for 7 days. If you have a roam like home plan for your phone it's cheaper to use your own plan then pay for their spotty WiFi. Plus you can use text and make phone calls, then trying to use Wifi apps like Whatsapp or Signal.

There were 6 of us in our group for our vacation this year, and Punta Cana was new to everyone except my husband who had been to the area years ago.

Upon arrival, check in was a breeze! Two of our friends who arrived before us, greeted us with our drink orders, and once checked in, we were off to drop off our stuff in our room and start wandering our home for the week.

Of all the resorts we've stayed in over the years, this was the most modern in design and technology. Everything was immaculate and there was always somebody doing something to the grounds, painting sidewalk curbs, trimming palm trees, always busy! Our room was quite nice, on the 2nd floor with a nice vaulted ceiling and ceiling fan. We didn't have a pool or ocean view which doesn't matter to us. We had a nice view of the walkway behind us, and yes you could see the resort next door, but that's ok. It was quiet and very tropical with all the trees and musical birds. Our a/c didn't work for the first 2 days, but after the 2nd service call, they got it fixed and then we froze on night 3! LOL. Once we got it to the right temperature, we were much happier.

The restaurants were plenty! The steakhouse was awesome! We had our wedding anniversary dinner there and we were all very pleased with our meals. Chinese was very good too, but I think they went a little overboard with the Teriyaki sauce on my beef teppanaki. Other than that, it was very tasty!! The Mexican restaurant was very colourful, but it took quite a while to get our food and when it did arrive, it was barely even warm. The taste was good, but the serving was too much for all of us, so we didn't eat everything.

The bars were typical. Lobby bar is always busy, the beach bar was the most popular. Drinks were served rather quickly which was nice. Our favourite, even those we went once, was the pool bar. The bartender there was awesome! He would put on a show by putting a drink or a bottle on his head and do a dance behind the bar! Hilarious!

The shows were good, but I expected a little bit more of an Occidental. The best one was the Michael Jackson show. This kid had the moves down pat! Very impressive!

The only let down, and we knew this, was that being on the Atlantic side, the water isn't as smooth and clear as we're used to. The waves were too bad to rent the Hobie cat, and just going into the water to cool off was more like a sport! Who can stand up the longest before the waves knock you down! For someone like me who's not a swimmer, it as a little scary. Everyone else liked it tho.

Overall, it was a great vacation with some great friends and a warm getaway from the cold Canadian winter.

My brother and I arrived at OPC last week and will be staying for several more, perhaps longer. I wanted to post this now since it may be next month before we return to the US. I give the OPC 5 Stars because my expectations for a moderately priced (cheap, really) All Inclusive have been well exceeded. Is everything perfect? NO. But we are paying an average rate of $115 for 2 per night (not each), including taxes, and the quality of the product received is far greater than the cost.

Cana is the name for sugar cane in the DR, and the sand lives up to the name. The sand is fine and granular. It is cuppy and comfortable to walk on. Added Bonus: The sand compacts when wet and it does not “give” under your feet, so it is easy to walk along the beach and VERY easy to walk into and out of the surf. NOTE: In May and June, seaweed from Mexico washes up on the beach. The seaweed is cleared every morning and the sand is raked.

The resort has 11 restaurants but not all are open because occupancy is down due to COVID. The steak house is excellent. The buffet is consistently good and has many offerings that change daily. Fresh fruit is offered at all meals and you would stick your fork in someone’s eye if they tried to take your pineapple or watermelon.

There are 3 pools and they are all sparkling clear. In the main pool there are 5 spray nozzles to give you a water massage on your head, neck and back. The nozzles go from powerful to turbo to whitewater, so pick your velocity and go for it.

The rooms are remarkably spacious and comfortable.

The grounds are immaculate. The grounds crews rake up the grass clippings after the mowers and weed eaters clip the lawn. Attendants constantly sweep up dropped flowers from the shrubs and trees that land on the sidewalks. My brother saw a man in the top of a tall palm tree that was trimming the frons. I have seen a 2 man paint crew and another solo painter walking the grounds to keep everything looking tip top.

The Occidental Punta Cana property is beautiful. The grounds are very well maintained and the rooms are clean and comfortable. The room we were assigned did show a little wear, but really nothing that made it inconvenient. The one thing that could have made the property absolutely perfect was the condition of the beach. Mother nature had unfortunately decided to bring on a lot of seaweed to the Bavaro beach area. I mean, a lot. In talking to the locals they said the had not seen it this bad in the past. The issue we had was that the hotel management did nothing about it. Not sure if the local government was responsible for maintaining the beaches, and just didn't, or if the hotel wasn't equiped to handle it. In part, you can't blame the hotel for what mother nature does but it seems to me that if the hotel advertises itself as a beach front all-inclusive hotel that it would ensure that aspect of their offering would show well and be available for their customers. I had reserved the use of one of their two catamaran sailboats and the morning I came to use it I was unable to do so and the attendant said they had been asking the folks responsible at the hotel all morning to clean off that section of the beach to allow the catamarans to slide from the beach onto the water. The stuff was piled up 3 ft high an 10 ft deep. This issue was a bit of a sore spot on the vacation for our family of 5 because we tend to be more beach people than pool people and we really did get to enjoy what would otherwise be a fantastic beach. There are plenty of great resorts with nice pools here in Texas. The service overall was okay. We recognized that we are all still dealing with the effects of the covid pandemic and the impact on hotel operations, especially as it relates to food service. That made it a different experience than we would have had otherwise. For example, there was nothing you could serve yourself. Everything had to be served by an employee. That slowed things downs considerably, especially on the weekends. We were told that the hotel offered special deals locally for people in the DR to come and stay Friday - Sunday. During the weekend, the buffet experience was a total zoo. People were aggressive when it came to getting their food. To counter that, the evening vibe was awesome when the live band played in the main lobby and the music continued into the night outside by the pool. With everyone dancing and singing. It was great. We took excursions outside of the hotel that were fantastic! The hotel is conveniently located and the us a ton to do in the area. One tip is that with a bit of work on our part and poking around on the internet you can book excursions on your own and usually get better deals going direct to the service provider. For example, we saved $125 on a 4-hour fishing charter by booking directly with the fishing operation. 3 starts is described as Average, according to TA's rating scale. This hotel could be Very Good (4 stars) if they improved their service quality.

Dear Client, We are really sorry to hear that you did not enjoy the experience in our hotel to the fullest, as we strive to make each stay with us an unforgettable one. Discussions involving the respective team members and management have taken place to review your comments, and we would like to assure you that all of your concerns will be addressed and attended to. It is a pity that you had to experience the presence of seaweed that is affecting the entire area of Punta Cana and that despite the constant cleaning by the team, we cannot fully control it as is our desire. As to why our buffets are currently assisted by our personnel, it is due to COVID-19 restrictions mandated by our government to ensure the safety of our guests and employees. We were very saddened to read your disappointment with the dining experiences, the Occidental Punta Cana team knows that meals are an important aspect of our guests' overall holiday experience, therefore, we will make sure to take your comments into consideration to improve in this aspect of our services. Again, we genuinely appreciate the time you took out of your day to inform us of the inadequacies you experienced during your stay and we sincerely hope that you will allow us another opportunity to demonstrate our true level of hospitality and interest in serving you properly in the future. Best regards, Marcos Castillo General Manager Occidental Punta Cana

Talk about bad first impressions, this resort has a lot to offer but missed terrible on virtually all levels of service and accommodations.
House keeping....our stay one week out of seven days our room only cleaned three times with “clean room” sign on door ignored. Toilet broke down so far six days out of seven. Most pleas to front desk to repair toilet also ignored. Luckily for us we have not signed up for any vacation club. Occidental FirstClub Vacation is a TOTALLY waste of money. I can assure that your hard earn cash can be more wisely spent than on this vacation club. What it does have going for it isa beautiful beach. Lack of proper training for the staff is so evident it’s a shame that they miss out on a lot of good tips. The wifi is included but the usual daily routine to get reconnected after daily disconnects is a TOTAL pain. Room mixups with who’s should be registered to the room is unbelievable. Daily attempts to straighten up their screw ups was to no avail. The room we had was supposed to be a suite...no ac in second room?! There is more but I’m done...you have been warned.

The main consideration for selecting the Occidental Punta Cana was the low price of the premium Royal Level compared the price of premium clubs in the other resorts.

We found the property to be clean and very well maintained. Our Royal Suite was very spacious and well appointed.

The beach had very soft white sand and the water was very calm on our beach. Seaweed was cleaned daily. If you wanted shade, the royal club beach section had some nice shade structures, but otherwise you had to find a large palm tree if you wanted shade. The neighboring resort had palapas for their guests.

The level of service from the food, housekeeping and bar staff was very good. We were very happy with the food, especially in the Royal Level dining room. We tried the specialty Oriental and Italian restaurants and found them to be very good in food and service.

The main negatives for us were very slow service in the lobby to book airport transfers, the required COVID tests and excursions. After waiting over twenty minutes in line to book an excursion, I booked a terrific excursion on my phone through Trip Advisor in less than a minute.

The other negative for us were the lack of communications. There was no schedule of daily activities and no information was given to the staff as to activities at the resort.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to return to the Occidental Punta Cana.

This was my husbands first time out of the country and our first time at an all inclusive resort. We were there for a friends wedding. The resort area is beautiful! all the staff are very friendly and respectful. Beach is clean and they groom it daily. We had an ocean view room was great, however there was a tree located right in from of our balcony so you had to step to the very corners of the balcony to get a good of view of the beach and water. The bath room had two sinks which you couldn't use at the same time unless the door was closed because the door hit the counter when it was open. Our first morning there we were solicited to invest in a time share there and we hadn't even had breakfast, been to the beach or explored the resort! NOT a good way to want us to come back! A lot of people use the rely on the internet daily, WIFI was very scetchy, then when I went to check on it she told me I had the wrong password, which she gave me our first day there and put a check next to it, new one didn't work much better. Food was average, didn't get to eat in any of the resturants because we couldn't get reservations same day and the one we did get, my husband got sick so we didn't go. Did have a meal from the seafood resturant for the wedding and I'm glad we didn't get reservations there, wasn't very good. All in all we had a great time, the area of the resort is beautiful the people are very nice.

4 of us visited this resort from February 18 to 25th. We had been here in 2014 when it was called, Occidental Flamenco. Check in was quick and we were taken to our rooms in building 23. This is one of the “Transit Vacation “ buildings, they have several. The rooms have been updated and are lovely. All have balconies except 1st floor and we could see the ocean, pools and more from our 3rd floor room. The building is central to dining, pools and the beach.
The housekeeping in the rooms is well done; we always received towels and had plenty of tp. There was an issue with our air conditioning not working properly, however in the end it was fixed after going to the front desk.
We had no difficulty getting chairs on the beach or at the pools at any time of the day. Depending on the time you go to exchange your towel, there may or may not be any available, however the hut receives them on a regular basis. Lots of entertainment at the beach such as volleyball, exercises, dance lessons. Periodically, drink orders are taken and brought to patrons. The vendors on the beach can be tiresome, however will walk by when you shake your head no. The beach is fantastic, water is warm and the waves awesome! Caution is needed for young children as the waves do have strength.
Entertainment was great at the theatre, however we really enjoyed the pre-show at the main lobby in the early evening. The lobby bar has lots of drinks to choose from, except they don’t carry Crown Royal 🙁.
We have no complaints about the food at the a la cartes’ or the buffet. We really enjoyed the jumbo shrimp which was plentiful on a couple of occasions at the buffet! The Steak House was closed on our last night so only got to enjoy two a la cartes, the Asian and Italian.
The grounds and pools are kept very clean and are well maintained. I would describe as them as immaculate! Lots of walking paths and pools everywhere.
I would definitely recommend this resort for couples and/or families.
