Until they decide to offer drink service on the beach go somewhere else. It was an expensive trip and I will not recommend this resort to anyone. They need more transportation around the resort and are stingy with towels unless you call and have to ask for more. When you call for service or complain they get on top of it but for the cost you shouldn’t have to. Very humid in the eating areas. Don’t dress nice for dinner because you will only sweat and be miserable. One of the restrooms next to the breakfast/lunch area smelled like a barnyard because you aren’t supposed to flush the toilet paper rather you are supposed to put it in a trashcan in the stall.

Hotel's Favourite
In a nutshell - the best overall resort experience I've ever had! Collectively, our group of 6 unanimously agreed. AND WE WERE NOT LEVEL. Just regular guests. So many reviews on this site are from Level guests so we really had no idea before we arrived of the non Level experience. As we were there for two weeks (Apr 1-15), I'll start with the most important reason the resort is so wonderful - the staff! To start our day, my friend and I went to the Balance Bar every morning for coffee/tea/smoothies and a few little pastries. YANELITZA, the barista there was amazing and always happy to see us!!! I enjoyed americanos with the odd cappucino every now and then and my friend, Yvette, had English Breakfast tea. We also enjoyed the smoothies from time to time which were fresh and fabulous as well as some of the specialty teas made daily. Now that I'm home, I'm wondering how I can survive each morning without that joyous start to the day where we sat in a beautiful airy breezeway with a colourful companion - the resident peacock - who would stop by to visit from time to time. A huge shout out to YANELITZA, our morning saviour who was some days accompanied by Adriana who was also lovely. To note, on the day we left, Yanelitza met us with a surprise delivery of our smoothies to the lobby! After the Balance Bar, we headed back to our room to get ready to hit the glorious beach. Our rooms were so very close to the lobby in building 19 (ours was 1916 - 2nd floor room overlooking the main thoroughfare to and from the beach and lush landscaping including a little lagoon with pink flamingos and other wildlife). We loved the location as at night, all the entertainment took place there and the evening buffet was a one minute walk. The peacock mentioned earlier took up residence in a tree near the room so we said hello along the way. The beach and pool were a short trolley ride away. They ran continuously and the drivers were always friendly and helpful. If we didn't want to wait, we walked - and the drivers would stop to ask when passing if we wanted a ride. Back to the room, we had everything we needed. Comfortable beds and pillows, a well stocked mini fridge and a sweet, young cleaner who took great care of us. Never any shortage of towels or toilet paper - the basics for sure but these are things we have had to fight to get at many other resorts. Beach towels were never an issue and if your towel went missing, the helpful staff at the front desk went out of their way to ease your mind and provide a new card. Customer relations at the resort were also amazing - Antonio and Armondo and several others truly went above and beyond to ensure we had the best guest experience. My friend will elaborate in her review on her interactions with both of these gentleman and others as she was their direct point of contact. The beach was our main retreat throughout the days and the pool from 5-7 pm was a great respite for our five o'clock Cosmo. Although there was some seaweed, it never hampered our ability to swim. The men on the beach worked tirelessly in the hot sun to clean it and we were in awe by their efforts. If you can, please show them some appreciation - they have very little. Beach chairs were never hard to find but a hut was more difficult...by noon, we could usually nab one but some days were harder and later than others. Activities at the beach and pool were many and varied such as mud cleansing, Pilates, yoga, dance lessons, spin bikes in the pool, aquafit, painting, paddle fit you name it! More about the animation team below...much more! As for the food quality/quantity, everywhere and anywhere we ate was divine. We all agreed, the best of any experience we have had. The breakfast and lunch buffets at the beach, the food truck by the pool bar, the dinner buffet by the lobby and all the restaurants we tried (we did the Vietnamese, the International, the Mediterranean, Quimera (thanks to Antonio/Armondo) and the Hacienda. We loved each and every one. We could have eaten at a few more a la cartes given we were there for two weeks but the buffet was soooooo good, we didn't bother. The pasta chef at the nighttime buffet deserves a special shoutout...he was quite funny and went out of his way to make a great pasta. LAST BUT NOT LEAST IS THE FANTASTIC ANIMATION TEAM - a VERY, VERY SPECIAL SHOUTOUT to our great friends JAVIER (my future son-in-law lol) AND CLAUDIO who were just the best humans (NOT TO MENTION DANCERS) and who even organized a surprise birthday party for our friend, Theresa. It took place in the "Zen" room (as we labelled it) in the main lobby. They spear headed the event with one of the lobby waitresses, "Queen Moon" (Rena) independently. The management was on board and also there to greet us after dinner with Claudio, Javier, Rena, Ningel and Coca Cola (aka) with champagne and cake and the best rendition of happy birthday. Javier and Claudio even purchased gifts for our friend from the hotel shop. She was in tears...and we could not believe how they had gone out of their way to decorate and organize the event. These people deserve soooo much credit. In the daytime, this team also led many of the pool and beach events. They work so hard but always took the time to talk and hang out. Fun, smart, respectful, talented and professional. They truly made our trip so memorable and are the main reason we'd definitely return. The animation team was led by their tireless manager, Pablo, who was anywhere and everywhere - very engaged and respected by his team - the quality of the entertainment he procured was stellar from top quality musicians to singers to shows. He and the animation team had the lobby jamming and dancing through the night. Special mention was the Silent Party which was a first for us and probably our favourite event besides the Walk Around the Moon event - something we hadn't heard of before. So fun. We danced pretty much every night away in the lobby. Special shoutout to the night bar gents who were superb - the waitresses - RENA AND MODESTO, and others who we came to know and love. These lobby teams were simply amazing during the entire two weeks. Also, not to forget JOSE at the beach bar who was the BEST. He hustled day in and day out and stood out for sure. Finally, our waitress in the lunch buffet who was in the corner near the grill and bar. Her name escapes me right now but my friend Yvette will make mention in her review. Do not hesitate to book this resort. the demographic was young to old. It truly fits the bill as a wellness resort but so very fun at the same time - we came back rested and rejuvenated (although we made the most of each and every day and night...)! A few final points: The grounds are spectacular in and of themselves. We felt very safe - security team did a great job, The maintenance and gardening teams were superb - always at work cleaning and pruning and so very friendly. Overall, we felt very welcomed and pampered. I can't say enough. We cannot wait to return. We hope to see you again next year! THANK YOU ALL. Love from the Halifax, Nova Scotia gals: Lynn, Yvette, Theresa, Heidi, Carol Ann and Gwen

I had previously stayed at a Melia in the Bahamas and had a decent experience so we decided to try again. We found that the food options were rather limited. When it came to snacks, there was one shack by the beach that offered two options for those who don’t eat seafood, we could pick either a chicken skewer or burger. Our ‘mini-bar’ only came with two beers in it for alcoholic beverages- not even wine. When we checked in and were greeted by Bernardino, we told him we like to start every morning with a bottle of champagne. He only made that happen once after seeing us at breakfast and remembering our request. Everyone expected to be tipped. It was very apparent. We had expected ‘all-inclusive’ not so much to have to be seen as constantly tipping. Many areas had jars with cash displayed out. The drinks were heavily watered down. Calling room service was a nightmare. Either you couldn’t get through, had a weird disconnection, and I even had the woman tell me at 1055AM that they were still serving breakfast (I wanted to place a lunch order and had some questions), and she instructed me to call back instead of just simply taking my order and stating it might take a short time longer as our call would have gone past the 1100AM lunch ordering time. There was an inability to get food after 11PM despite Merkado being listed in the resort packet provided to us on arrival at the adjoining Caribe resort- we were told we can’t dine there. People selling services and goods harassed you while you were on the beach- Sandals does not allow this. It was incredibly annoying to constantly have to deal with that and no one seemed to mind them or do anything about it. Overall, I’d never stay at another Melia again.

The Level @ Melia Punta Cana Beach…. Beautiful weather BUT Melia is certainly not a 5 Star Resort, not by any stretch of the imagination…. Staff are “mostly good “ but can only work with what they are given… Some have got a little attitude…. Never noticed this at any other resort… Even with the upgrade to the Level Suites Beachside NO steak on any menu just beef, $90 USD if you want a steak... SERIOUSLY !!!! Each menu is relatively small and not much to choose from... No Premium drinks, ie. Vodka only cheap Russian or at best Skye!!!! Otherwise, Grey Goose, Absolute, Cîroc, you pay extra….! No lobster, you pay, no ice cream shop available, no cake shop available, not even Mojito cocktails on 5 of the 7 days were there, ridiculous…. SERIOUSLY not even close to 5 Star by any standards…. Large Pool, dirty, sun beds are soo used, they have no padding on them whatsoever, may as well sit on the floor…. Buffet restaurant, food just not recognisable, not even the Dominican Food Night… Room bed linen on arrival was dirty, bed sheets, dirty, pillows very yellow, not white, had to have them all changed, we stripped every piece of linen, and asked for change, rooms are looking a little tired tbh… Wi-Fi in room did not work for 3 days, yet it was a simple fix... Showerhead, never been cleaned, only half the jets working and took at least 3 to 4 mins every time before it got hot, then would fluctuate between hot and cold whilst showering sometime scorching you..... Room chambermaid (young boy Elvin) forgot to leave face cloths 3 days running and had to wait 30 to 40mins to have them delivered, then apparently, they sacked him, so other staff said... Sorry guys but you’re a 4 Star and that would be stretching it….. maybe just 3 Star… We have stayed in many 5 Star hotels including 4 this year but sorry, Mexico is just soooo much better value for money and their customer service is unmatched…. All drinks are watered down considerably and only 5 cocktails available…. Book at your own risk, because we ARE NOT fussy customers, we eat just about anything and enjoy our holidays whatever we are given, we don’t stress, we don’t complain but WE DO observe and WE DO write full reviews because that’s what we ALWAYS use prior to booking our holidays… Just a note, upon arrival they try to up sell the wellness rooms, do not bother, seriously the upgrade isn’t worth it AND they constantly try to whisk you off to Melia Falcon DO NOT BOTHER everyone says it’s just a type of buy in time share, don’t waist a day of your holiday just politely say “no”… We said a firm no but others here said what a waste of time… Now beach !!!! not their fault, obviously…. but if the beach or sea is your thing, nooooo full of seaweed, seaweed, seaweed, can’t really swim and constantly approached by beach peddlers, even trying to sell marijuana or cocaine….. This is not good for any resort….. Summary: All the above is available at no extra cost in Bahia Amber 2 DR Also, in Secrets Akumal, Secrets The Vine, TRS Coral, Mexico, TRS Cap Cana, Beach Palace, Sun Palace Cancun, cos we’ve been to all these in the last 12 months Big shout out for our Butler Bernardo who done his best to rectify simple management mistakes and the Barman on the 3rd floor at the Quimera (Eric, I think..) BUT the supervisor of the Quimera Ground floor Restaurant "Beatrix", was a very ignorant, rude person who spent 10 mins trying to tell me the Quimera restaurant was closed and do not serve food on the outside terrace by the pool for lunch, seriously, I think she forgot that they are in the hospitality industry and I had to remind her.... I told her if she did not serve us, then I would call room service and have it delivered there and demand the food was from the Quimera restaurant, (she looked puzzled) but as soon as I let her know of my 8.4 million social media followers that would be informed of this SHE suddenly arrange for us to be served outside (receiving, the best service we have ever had from this resort) with staff checking on us every 5 mins to ask if everything was to our satisfaction, Strange eh.... (the power of social media) Large pool in Level area, well, what can I say, other than, The Swim Up pool bar, (we are not drinkers, just maybe 1 or 2 per day) They serve pool bar sitters so much alcohol that they are shouting and screaming drunk, from about midday till 7PM, this is clearly unacceptable because this is a LEVEL WELLNESS Resort (relaxation resort) seriously, all you can hear is shouting, screaming, arguing, right at the other end of the pool, furthest from the bar, then from about 11am till around 3pm the hotel allows some fitness program in the pool with the MUSIC so LOUD you can even hear it clearly in your room or on the beach... ridiculous.... no peace and quiet at all, anywhere within 750 metres on that dreadful noise.... Finally, if you want to hear 6 to 8 petrol strimmer’s being used ALL DAY every day then fill your boots, I know the resort gardens, which are nice, need maintenance BUT have you not heard of the very good up to date battery ones which are available in the commercial range now, (this was supposed to be a quite ZONE) really !!!!!! BEWARE mosquito's everywhere..... WOULD WE RETURN! absolutely no... this is not a relaxation Level Upgrade it's a free for all, run down resort, with some very rude staff, at times... Dress code.... if they remember, or can be bothered some days.... We don't normally complain or write negative reviews but sorry, this is an expensive resort and customers should be aware of spending this amount on money, especially in this current world of financial crisis..... Do yourself a favour book Hyatt Group (formally AMR Resorts) for a much better experience in their secret’s resorts or hotels OR TRS, soo much better…. We thought of booking this in advance for Xmas this year but sooo glad we didn’t, even with all the good reviews, it seems that there is a special type of customer who, maybe loves this drunken, loud resort, where you can just about do what you want without having to consider other customers… Beloved Playa Mujeres, here we come, for a real 3 week Xmas treat….

Pool or beach? The property exudes calm and is thoughtfully laid out, with lots of water and space. We were greeted on arrival and whisked to the separate check in area for The Level guests, right next to the swimming pool and less than 100 metres from the beach. We were introduced to our personal concierge, Bernardino Cueto, who escorted us to our beach side suite and made sure we were settled in with a dinner reservation sorted for later. Food and drinks were good quality and abundant, both in the property and also on the beach. We made sure to try most of the restaurants and bars, all good with consistent service levels, finishing our week with a return to Calathea restaurant, another delicious meal to finish our week, which passed all too quickly. The big differentiator for this resort is the staff, I can’t thank Bernardino enough for his excellent service - always available whenever needed, but never overbearing - a gentleman.

The best service I've ever experienced. If you looked lost, any staffer would stop to offer you help. So happy to have vegan options at a place like this. At Quimera (The Level) they made the best whole-food veggie burger I've ever had. I highly recommend everyone upgrade to "The Level" Experience. Worth every dollar. Everyone was amazing and I wish I had written down all the names. Rosselyn, Bladimir. Eribel and Victor at The Jigger Bar (master drink mixing), Bladimir, Adriana Baez at the Quimera Bar, so many others. Housekeeping was kind, respectful and checked in with us when they saw us. The man who kept it all together for us was Bernardino Cueto. We needed anything, he was there. Always checked on us multiple times per day and treated us like family. One of the best people you would ever meet.

The resort was beautiful and the drinks were plentiful, our butler Bernardo aka Young Moolah Baby was fantastic and helped us set all of our dinner reservations and set us up for a successful week! Every morning he would send us a message with an inspirational quote and a list of the days activities, and he was always available at the drop of a hat to help us with whatever we’d need! Only disappointment was that none of the drinks had umbrellas in them, but that’s easily overlooked with how great they all tasted, and how delicious the meal options were.
