Heritage Marari, a boutique resort with four traditionally built Keralian houses (Tharawad, restored and recreated) located ten minutes from Marari beach. The rooms have beds and furniture that we've sourced from traditional homes and the famed craftsmen of the region. Furnishings too rely on local materials, offset with linen, rough-woven cotton and other natural fabrics. Our promise is to provide as much care, comfort and peace you would get in a star-rated hotel, with the personal and sociable touch that is synonymous with Home Stays. Your host Bruce is always available to help you settle comfortably in your rooms. Being a local from a well respected family, he brings you tales of the bygone generations and can guide you through the soul of this fishermen's village called Marari. Ours is the only property around Marari which is on the backwaters and has access to the beach directly by canoe and by foot.
Very nice homestay on the backwaters. Our room was on the top floor with a wonderful terrace to relax on! The room was very nice with a bright bathroom! The people were very friendly and helpful! In the small restaurant we were always spoiled with very good and plentiful food! Unfortunately the beach was a bit far away on foot, but you have no problem finding an auto rickshaw to take you everywhere! A wonderful place to spend a few days! We were more than satisfied! Compliments to the staff!

We have just spent eight wonderful days at Heritage Marari. Bruce was our host. Heritage Marari is a collection of traditional Keralan houses collected by Bruce's family and assembled on-site next to a backwater leading directly to the Indian Ocean, 10 minutes' walk to Chethi Beach and a 5 minute tuk tuk ride to Marari Beach. The houses are beautiful, clean and comfortable and the grounds are teeming with extraordinary birds and butterflies. Bruce is a consummate host, and he and his small team met every demand of two adults and three teenagers, booking tuk tuks and taxis, arranging trips to Alleppey and the backwaters, into the hills and to Kochi; and sending us to a local clothing shop to supply our son when the airline lost his suitcase. He was full of information and advice, and even took us to a neighbour's house to watch the World Cup Final! The highlight, for us, though, was the food. We ate breakfast and supper there every day. Bruce serves what he calls 'home cooking' but which is, truthfully, some of the best food we have ever eaten, and that's coming from two professional chefs. Morning and evening, Bruce and his chef served a different set of dishes from the local traditions of the Alleppey region, and every one was a revelation. At Heritage Marari we felt immersed in the real Kerala, and experienced our surroundings in a way that wouldn't have been possible at a resort. It doesn't have the frills of a high-end venue but the care and affection lavished on us were far beyond what we would have found at a fancy hotel. Bruce honestly made us feel like family, and this made our holiday very special. We will definitely be returning to this little gem!

This is the most delightful place to stay and relax . We had on of the bungalows which was well designed and spotlessly clean with a large well laid out bathroom . Bruce And Raul are both very happy to help with any questions or requests. The breakfast and evening meal ( if you choose to eat there) are delicious samples of local cuisine. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was because of the resident dogs which took to barking and howling at the smallest provisions throughout the night

Small and cosy place to stay with excellent staff and food ( we ate breakfast and evening meals there every day for a week). You can take out the bicycles to explore the area and local beaches.
I was disappointed that it didn’t seem possible to take part in the daily activities in the resort website - “You would accompany them to the local market, help in buying the provisions for the day, bargain for the fish, choose the fresh veggies and later help in preparing the day’s meal” - which was what I expected.
Also the two dogs on site were a real nuisance at night - barking and howling. It is only because of this problem that I would not return, sadly.

Super friendly and helpful host, EXCELLENT cuisine - best dinner we had in India so far. Very relaxing, jungle style atmosphere right by the lagoon (no mosquitos!) with beautiful, authentic heritage style rooms and cottages with AC. The breathtakingly beautiful MARARI beach is a mere 10 minute bike ride away. Thanks, Bruce, for a truely lovely stay !

First of all no t.v... second no pool..no fridge too, most importantly no shampoo " cant believe it we are near a beach and no shampoo, asked for it and they tell me it's a home stay...that's why I guess no shampoo .. I booked a four star package iris tours.. all hotels were great in our tour but this one is ranked worse just for the amenities... it's ok if you want to go back 100 years and have AC bed , light, American style toilet and shower..

This place is quiet, offers a good quality basic stay. The host is extremely nice and helpful. I enjoyed the traditional Indian food in the evening. The place has a good location to explore Marari and the backwaters.

Very impressed by Bruce's hospitality. He is doing a wonderful job by creating and maintaining this beautiful place for us. He gave us the opportunity to be so close to the Nature. And the beach so close! Got some amazing photos of the sea and the sun! My kids' exclamation that we have entered into the Paradise said it all! And after 2 nights' stay the kids don't want to leave!

We read some great reviews before coming to Azheekans home-stay but we were overall more than impressed here.
The overall hospitality at Azheekans (amazing food!) made our trip well worth it. Babu who runs it is a warm and friendly man who helped with all that we needed (rides, massages, etc) but more than that was just an easy going great person to meet. This is also true of his staff.
