8,825 feet above sea level in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas lies a higher order of luxury. The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa is spread over seven unspoilt, fir-laden acres, with majestic views of the Affarwat Peaks. This 85-room resort is framed at every vantage point by nature at its most spectacular. The world’s highest ski lift, the Gulmarg Gondola – which takes you to Kongdoori Mountain, is only a short walk away. Meadows and forests that have enchanted travellers for centuries wait to be explored by trekking enthusiasts and undying romantics. Clad in locally sourced pine and slate, the resort is built in a style true to the architectural heritage of Kashmir. In every way the indoors mirror the beauty of the outdoors. Specialty restaurants, a cigar lounge are amongst the necessary luxuries in place. Add to these other thoughtful additions like our children’s club, a mini theatre and a dedicated Activities Concierge and you will find The Khyber is a resort at par with the best in the world.

Nestled in a picturesque setting, The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa garners accolades for its impeccable cleanliness and breathtaking location, with travelers frequently mentioning the proximate Gondola station and scenic vistas. While the luxurious amenities, especially the heated pool, contribute to its cozy ambience, some guests suggest enhancements in outdoor services and the spa. Despite criticisms of being somewhat overpriced, particularly the dining options, the hotel's enchanting atmosphere and devoted service leave many with unforgettable experiences. Room views and cultural decor impress, although there are sporadic notes on maintenance and cost.

We stayed at three different 4 to 5 star resorts in the state of Kashmir and we found Khyber the best. Location is very convenient and near from the Gondola station, the resort is beautiful, scenic and extremely well-maintained. The staff is outstanding and goes out of their way to cater to your needs. Muzammal from the front desk even gave his personal whatsapp contact number. Ashfaq, the manager from front desk is another member who went out of his way to help. We forgot a pouch which had passports, money and some important stuff in the room and realized that after leaving the resort and reaching to Pahalgam. Muzammal and Ashfaq personally searched and found it and Muzammal kept it safely sealed well and handed over to our driver at a later date. The view of Himalayas from the room is mesmerizing. Their dining options are very good and every venue had something outstanding in the menu. They will serve out of the menu items also if you ask for. I would definitely recommend Khyber and will stay there again.

The resort provided not only a luxurious escape but also a haven of care and hospitality that exceeded all our expectations.

During our stay, our 18-month-old son fell a bit sick during the night. In such a remote location, we were initially worried about accessing medical help. To our immense relief, the resort had an in-house medical attender and the necessary medicines available, allowing us to act quickly. This level of preparedness was astonishing and undoubtedly saved us from a potentially distressing situation.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Faisal, who coordinated everything with remarkable efficiency. His prompt response and genuine concern were truly commendable. Faisal also ensured that our stay was comfortable throughout, going above and beyond to assist us with baby food and any other needs we had.

Another highlight of our stay was the personalized BBQ dinner that the resort organized upon our request. The atmosphere was perfect, and the food was delicious, making it a memorable evening for our family.

The thing which impressed us was the lavish interiors. But the resort lacks in terms of some amenities which should be a necessity for a top notch property. As the ambient temperature gets extremely cold in the winter time, there’s no hot water facility in the bidet which is really inconvenient & m really surprised that the celebrities staying in the resort aren’t highlighting this. Also the areas outside the rooms aren’t air proof leading to cold air entering everywhere. The resort food quality is good but very costly ( which has become very common in all five star properties in Kashmir valley for whatever reasons). Mr. Waseem of housekeeping is the brightest star as he is attending to each & everyone’s needs & ensuring that the resort’s high standards are maintained. The heated swimming pool is a good one but there should be a life guard available & there should be time allotted to families & couples as the couples get really cosy in the pool which sometimes becomes inconvenient for the families.

Dear Sagar, Thank you for sharing your thoughts on your recent winter family vacation. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed the lavish interiors and appreciated the service from Mr. Waseem. Your feedback regarding the amenities is important, and we take your comments seriously. We understand the need for hot water facilities in winter and will look into it, as well as the air-tightness of the room areas. Furthermore, your suggestions about the heated swimming pool timings have been thought of before but trust everyone is particular about the timings and mostly want during evening only hence becomes too tough for us to manage. This reason only is Open to all inhouse Guests and then during the day the traffic is very slow when most of the Guests are out of the hotel for day excursions and activities for usage of the Guests who want privacy. With regards to the Hot water facility in the bidets would be tough as the overall temperature of water across the resort is maintained at 60 degrees and this will practically have high chances of the burns while using the health faucets at highest point of heated temperature. Thank you so much once again for staying with us and would look forward to welcome you back very soon. Warm Regards Vinit Chhabra

Not trying to burst anyone's bubble, but stayed at Khyber for 3 nights, and felt that it is quite overhyped.
The rooms are similar to standard hotel rooms ( our room's safety box & TV remote was not working) The resort itself does not have any activities. The staff, though courteous, lacked the basic information about their own property and not that hospitable ( not because they were not service oriented but more likely coz they have not been properly trained)
My take- visit the place maybe for a meal, but skip paying the exorbitant pricing for the rooms.
PS- You let the cabbies and the guides know that you are putting up at Khyber, and they quote much higher, thinking that if you can afford Khyber- you can afford their over priced services too:)

The place is very high brow with an astronomic pricing so it was full of well-heeled guests. The architecture is beautiful and the service very responsive.

Food: We only ordered two ala carte items. It took some time to come but the food was well prepared. The mutton and rotis were excellent. They brought us some sweet items complimentary but we found them unappealing.

Ambience: It was pleasant with a local musician playing the famous Kashmiri instrument the Rabab. The traditional music was nice but it didn’t last and one of the staff wanted the artist to pluck out some filmy songs to sing too. it was sad to hear such a fine instrument plucking out Bollywood songs for the entertainment of the employees who obviously didn’t care for their own traditional music. The overall effect was that the place was attempting “classy” without the staff having a real understanding of what entails.

The only thing that kind of clashed with the ambience was the serving of water in plastic bottles. Glass decanters would have been more aesthetic.

Disaster: The sad thing is both of us fell ill after the meal. Neither of us had eaten early in the day since breakfast and we ate the same dishes at this hotel. The difference was that I ate much more of the lotus stem starter my partner had very little. Within two hours I was vomiting and having loose motions. Violently sick. The whole night I had to continuously go to the bathroom for 10 times until in the morning the only thing returning was the water I was drinking in-between the bouts. I am pretty sure that the lotus stem dish was the culprit though it could have been the side salad of carrot, radish and tomatoes or even the complimentary sweet items.

I had heard such great things about the hotel and the food was very tasty and well presented. Something went wrong with the food hygiene.

Terrible Experience at Khyber Himalayan Resort

Our stay at Khyber Himalayan Resort in Gulmarg on July 30-31, 2024, was nothing short of a disaster. The Chicken Biryani was excessively oily, overly spicy, and barely edible. The noodles were dry, lacking any vegetables, and equally disappointing. Despite our feedback, the manager dismissed our concerns with an indifferent attitude.

The issues didn’t end there. The resort’s indoor areas were unbearably hot due to the lack of air conditioning, and they refused to let us use the outdoor seating, which was covered despite the sunny weather. The staff's rudeness was palpable.

The situation worsened when my husband used the soaker tub in our room. The water was muddy and yellowish, and after draining, the room was flooded with dirty water. We were informed that the drainage was backing into the tub. Instead of taking responsibility, the staff and manager tried to cover up the issue. They offered us a neighbouring room, but with our original room filled with sewage water, that was the least they could do.

Although the Brava Restaurant provided improved service later in the evening, it felt like a superficial attempt to compensate for the day’s many failures. Overall, the experience was unacceptable, rude, and disappointing. I strongly advise against staying at this resort.

Dear Guest, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It’s truly disheartening to hear about the challenges you faced during your stay at Khyber Himalayan Resort. We apologize for the issues with the food and the discomfort regarding the outdoor areas seating. Trust, we understand our all esteemed Guests prefer to sit on the Decks usually during the summer and that is our first choice to allow them enjoy the meals outdoors. This particular case we have had miss and will surely check for the reasons. We also have checked in our details that Room during the course of the stay had got some fault with the drainage and our Team immediately changed your room to the next and nearby one. We’re committed to improving and ensuring a better experience for our guests in the future. Thank you once again for your insights. Warm Regards Vinit Chhabra

A very large hotel, nice property. Check in & out experience was good. Premier Room was clean, comfortable bed & pillows. provided plenty of amenities- lotion, Shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, soap, shower cap, beauty kit, dental kit, shaving kit etc. Tea, coffee, bottle water & slippers were provided as well. The buffet breakfast had varieties of hot & cold dishes. Multi cuisine Restaurant sitting is nice & we enjoyed breakfast, dinner, lunch there. food quality was good & delicious. The interior design of the hotel is nice (but needs polish/painting, looks old & damp). The reason for 4 star - over priced hotel, does not go with the room appearance (old look, not polished, walls need painting. Shower drainage is not good, flow water to the toilet area even though there is a glass partition in between. Provided instant coffee & cattle for boiling water, no coffee machine).
Staffs speaks English & helpful. Over priced hotel.

Just checked out from this hotel after 3 nights of stay and honestly speaking I felt it is bit over-rated.
We were in Luxury Double Room Gulmarg view.

Positive highlights: The location is good, a property of this size and all the amenities at this location is commendable. Some of the staffs particularly in the restaurant were professional.

Negative highlights: The housekeeping was below expectation and that ruined our mood. The flush in the toilet was not working properly and though we complained a few times there was no permanent solution. Everyday after room cleaning they did not replenish the commonly used items like toiletries and towels which even in a standard hotel is done. We have to dial them to ask for new shower gel bottles or towels. The curtain came out and they fixed it after two days. The chairs in the balcony have no cushions.

Individually each issue may not be a big concern but all of them together gave us the impression that this hotel is not guest friendly in-spite of the fact that the charge is premium and is considered to be a luxury hotel.

Stayed at Khyber for the 2nd time this September, 2024 as we wanted a different experience after the 1st visit during the snowy season in 2018, which was magical. But the end of monsoon season is as beautiful! Greenery and ofcourse the clean fresh air is all we want for a break atleast from the concrete cities we live in.
The rooms, the restaurants are all nice and comfortable. No complaints (except that it would be nice to be served coffee/tea in the restaurant even late evenings).
What makes Khyber the best place to stay in Gulmarg, or the entire Kashmir region, is definitely it's location (you don't need to go out of the resort really, to enjoy the most picturesque views). Second, and as important almost, is the hospitality. The staff are very efficient, polite and pro-active. They take all the effort in making it a memorable stay for you.
I wanted to celebrate my husband's birthday (in advance while we were there), so they arranged for a small cake that evening as a surprise (as I'd requested for one), and even decorated the place with birthday balloons and flowers. It was really special indeed.
Big shoutout to Arif, for best service, his friendliness and warmth. Zahid gave us great knowledge about the place and motivated us to be back soon for skiing too! Chef Gupta (can't recall full name) was too sweet; all our requests were met with immediately (hot hot mooli parathas, yummy french toasts, sweeeet lassi). The fresh apple juice was the best ever and we gulped down so many glasses! I asked for a certain tweak in the Kahwa, and that was also done to my satisfaction.
Truly grateful for such a memorable experience that now we certainly will be back for a 3rd time. :)

The roads are nice and smooth. Not bumpy or anything. The ascent is also not very steep so it should be comfortable. Moreover in May there would be no snow on the roads so least risk of slipping etc. Only the 50 metre last approach to Khyber hotel is a bit steep but again nothing to worry as such as the roads are well laid.
