Marangu Hotel is set on 12 acres of beautiful garden and has been open since 1932. We have been organising climbs of Mount Kilimanjaro, on all routes, for over 90 years. Marangu Hotel was one of the first ever outfitters of Kilimanjaro and we have extensive experience and knowledge. Marangu Hotel’s mission has always been to support the local economy and to operate an ethical and sustainable tourism company. We provide our guests with the very best Kilimanjaro guides, who have decades of experience and have your safety, health and the treatment of the mountain as their top priorities. We use top quality mountaineering equipment and gear, and we do safety checks before and after every climb. The original farm buildings (now offices and reception) were built in 1907 as part of a coffee farm before being converted in 1932. Guest accommodation is provided in cottages around the gardens, and meals are prepared with vegetables from our own gardens and home baked bread.

If you want an amazing taste of colonial Africa in a 100 plus year old hotel run by the same family for over 50 years, this is the place for you. Character abounds, the garden is beautiful, the hosts are fascinating and they know all there is to know about climbing Killi. They have access to many amazing local guides and porters and they looked after us impeccably on the climb. This is a place of deep character rarely found and we enjoyed every minute.

Marangu Hotel has been in the hands of the Bryce-Bennett family for decades. They deliver a perfect combination of professionalism, extensive knowledge & a caring personalised approach. This is the second time I have climbed Mt Kili with Marangu Hotel – the first in 1995 with friends, and this time taking my husband & 2 daughters to conquer the mountain. The experience was just as good 30 years later & we could have happily stayed at Marangu Hotel post climb for another week ! If you relish colonial history, enjoy an early morning coffee on your verandah watching the mist part to reveal Mt Kili, roaming 12 acres of lush butterfly filled gardens, indulging in Hemingway Bar’s Kilimanjaro beers, G&Ts & bar snacks, delicious home cooked 4 course dinners, fascinating guests & truly connecting with the locally employed highly experienced climb crews who quickly become friends, then Marangu Hotel is your heaven. The attention to detail experienced is rarely found in travel companies & Desmond, Seamus & Jackie are a superb & professional team. The Mt Kili climb plan, briefing, outfitting & support was delivered seamlessly & professionally - you know you are in safe hands at all times. A unique & utterly memorable destination for the well-travelled, or those that want to be.

All a bit dated, but clean and comfortable throughout. Our bungalow was clean and airy, if a bit dated. Beds very comfortable and nice separate seating area inside and outside. The restaurant basically furnished but tasty freshly prepared food. Separate bar and lounge area with good selection of drinks and Wi-Fi. Fantastic views of Kilimanjaro when the clouds lifted. Beautiful large grounds filled with variety of birds. Small swimming pool in separate peaceful area.

We were recommended this hotel by a few other people who had done their Kilimanjaro Trek organised through them. Our trip was a little last minute, organised less than a week before we started! Their excellent customer service started before we even arrived! We were coming from Tanga and made our own way to bus station local to the hotel. They arranged their driver to meet us at the bus station and take us to the hotel. From the moment we arrived at the hotel, the staff were amazing. We got to know many of their names, and nothing was too much trouble. They helped us check through our kit to ensure we had the appropriate equipment and attire for the whole trek, and loaned us items that weren't up to scratch or that we didn't have. The room was very comfortable and quiet had a lovely outlook into the gardens with many birds around. A good breakfast and dinner were provided and they were able to cater to dietary requirements. Fresh drinking water was available in the rooms and tea or coffee was brought on request in the mornings. There is a bar on site and they can also provide lunch for a small charge. The trek was really well organised. There was a briefing the evening before and in the morning we were introduced to our guides Frank and August. In addition, there were a team of 6 (chef, assistant chef and 4 porters) all who were keen to see us successfully reach the summit! The main takeaway is to walk as slowly as possible so you don't work up a sweat or any kind of exertion. I had to come down from my trek early due to illness. August accompanied me and really looked after me and made sure I was OK. Frank stayed on with my husband and helped him to reach the top. The hotel staff arranged for their driver to take me to see a doctor at the local hospital and had someone go with me to help navigate the system. Really lovely and friendly people here and I would like to whole heartedly recommend their hotel and their treks. Even if you don't do a trek, the hotel is such a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of Arusha and Moshi. They have massages available and local day trips to caves and they can arrange guides for other day hikes. I also enjoyed meeting and chatting with the other guests and learning about their adventures.

Amazing trip! We stayed at Marangu Hotel before and after our Kilimanjaro climb and utilized Marangu guide services for the Kili climb. The staff were so hospitable and kind, the accommodations and grounds were beautiful, and the food was delicious. Desmond was so helpful with organizing our Kili climb and preparing us for the trek. We could not have succeeded on the mountain without him and his planning. He was also super helpful in connecting us with services for the rest of our trip. We felt cared for the entire trip!! Would recommend this company and hotel to anyone! (And I have!)

This is where everyone goes before they hike, Mount Kilimanjaro. The staff is very very friendly here. They definitely know the hiking business. The rooms are pretty large, but the mattress was so so not that comfortable. The bar was in a separate building, which is a great place to relax drink and talk and use the Wi-Fi although the Wi-Fi goes in and out all the time. The reception and cafeteria had no Internet and there’s not much cell phone service there so that was very inconvenient and I’m not sure why they could just provide that like every other lodge does in this area The food tasted OK but there wasn’t much of a selection. It’s definitely meant like a Spartan diet before you go hiking not a luxury buffet to eat well. At check-in the ask for passports and write everything down claiming They will log into the portal to register you for the Kilimanjaro hike, but none of that is true. When you get to the hike, they will redo all that work.

Well where to start… I didn’t see my mom for about 5 years since I moved to US and wanted to do something great for our meeting. So eventually I picked Africa. Got quotes from a few businesses organizing a mt Kilimanjaro climbs and chose Marangu mostly because of great reviews I’ve read here. Anthony and Desmond were very helpful we discussed and planned the best schedule to experience Africa — 5 day Kilimanjaro climb, 3 days safari and 5 days Zanzibar. I missed my flight connection and got there one day late but Desmond was able to manage moving everything forward without losing anything including our flights within Tanzania and safari trip with his partners. The whole Marangu team was absolutely amazing and my mom is missing them so much. I would say everybody treated her as their own mom with such love and respect. Food was delicious and rooms were comfy and clean. Honestly first I worried about wiring few thousands dollars to Africa before going but eventually I did and everything went smooth and even better then expected, they even didn’t charge extra for the extra day my mom stayed there waiting for me. I can’t recommend Marangu Hotel team more. The only thing I regret I couldn’t stay longer. I would come back any time.

My family and I recently stayed at the Marangu Hotel and had a wonderful visit at their incredibly well cared for grounds. The staff was welcoming, warm, efficient, proving quality food, rooms and preparation to hike Kilimanjaro. They provided a team of #17 to assist us up successfully summiting the mountain. Couildn't recommend them more!

We Went to Kilimanjaro Summit with Marangu Hotel. What an experience and what a team. Starting from a hotel owner to a staff = very friendly and helpful. Chief guide & team = Amazing We were 17 hikers, and we had 17 porters, 10 guides and 1 chef, and 4 servers. We never had such delicious food on the mountain, which was our primary source during the summit.

The team are wonderful, always happy to help and make your experience faultless. Food is unreal. After 3 nights stay, Desmond and the team then organised our trip up Mount Kilimanjaro with 40+ porters and it was pure magic. Huge thank you to all of the team at Marangu hotel, I’d like to come back for a week to just relax!
