Mopti is a small place and the hotel Kanga was Luke a little oasis. The restaurant is great and the rooms clean and secure. The grounds have an appealing rustic appearance and appear to be well kept. A nice surprise.

I stayed here after getting bumped from a flight in Sevare in June 2014. Some of the reviews complain about this and that, but believe me if you have been out in some of the other locations around northern Mali, Kanaga is a true relief. I won't dwell on the particulars, but for a hotel at 10% occupancy - the local tourism is devastated, and all the aid workers and UN minions stay in Sevare - Hotel Kanaga is doing really well.

The Hotel Kanaga is alive and well, in spite of the challenges West Africa always poses, and in spite of the current political problems in the north of Mali. We were there Oct and Nov, and Mali is still the best of West Africa! Mopti is the perfect base for seeing the Dogon County and Djeunne, and Mopti itself has a lot of vitality, its own mud mosque, market, and wonderful people. The Kanaga is well located, just opposite the great Bani River and a comfortable walk to the action of the river front and market. The Kanaga's staff is welcoming. The rooms are clean and stylishly decorated, with nice attention to detail. While there is a window, it is small and not much light comes through. The bathroom, shower only, was clean, bright and lovely w/marble surfaces. The landscaping is attractive, complimenting an our door bar/restaurant overlooking the pool. The indoor restaurant is comfortable, although set up for larger groups. The food offerings are abbreviated due to slow business, and they might be better off creating a shortened menu of items they are actually serving. The capitan (Nile perch) kabob is delicious, and we also enjoyed the spaghetti. Green beans and peas were also good. The AC works well throughout the property, rooms, lobby and restaurant. There is a shop w/really nice jewelry, some old, at the hotel. Mopti and all of Mali has been hurt by the political problems in the north, and there are very few tourists in Mali now. But in the south, everything is fine. There are no problems, and we felt very welcome, by everyone. We drove in from Burkina Faso. (All of the passport/immigration procedures were completed outside, under a tree! A first for me!) When the officer returned our passports he smiled and said, "Welcome to Mali!" And we felt welcome, everywhere we went. The Kanaga is owned by the Bombara Tours. Bombara Tours arranged our trip throughout Ghana, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso and Mali. We had a car, guide and driver (Amadu, the best!) the entire time. We felt well cared for and safe, and we saw and did a lot. After more than a week in less than stellar hotels across Mali, I was looking forward to Hotel Kanaga. It was supposed to be so nice. It was a big let down. Everything looks nice on the surface, but look close enough, and you'll see the problems. The bathroom was the nicest I'd seen in sometime. Marble tiles, beautiful vanity, plush Tommy Hilfiger towels. I couldn't wait to stand in a nice hot shower and steam up the whole room. Lo and behold, there was NO HOT WATER!!! I'd just left a crappy room in Dogon Country that was a definite dive, but at least there was hot water. How dare this "fancy" place not have hot water. Also, those plush, white towels had dirt stains on them. That was a real turn off. They were probably clean, but given how dusty Mali is, they should have been thoroughly bleached too. When I closed the bathroom door, there was a huge pile of dust/dirt behind it. The food at the restaurant was okay, nothing to write home about. We'd wanted to sit out by the pool at lunch, but were told we had to eat inside in this huge ballroom (just the three of us). Then at dinner, we went back to the ballroom, but were told we had to eat outside by the pool. Now it's evening and the mosquitoes were out. What sense did that make? This hotel was right off the main river and was set in a very pretty location. It was just a few minutes walk from some of the markets but wasn't in the main area so it was a great place to get away and relax. The hotel staffw as EXTREMELY friendly and helpful. The rooms were comfortable but nothing extrodinary, just a good place to lay your head. The bathrooms were nicely decorated, small, and with only standup showers. The pool and lounge area was beautiful. Overall, it was expensive for the area, but was a very nice and comfortable location.
