We had a very spacious room - because a double wasn't available we were given a triple at little extra cost. The food was absolutely excellent - we had the beef bourguignon and the steak pie - filled with best quality beef locally sourced. It's dog friendly.

Named after the king of light entertainment, Bruce Forsyth, the hotel is rather like Brucie in his Strictly days…….. slightly past it’s best and a bit decrepit .

The positives .
Very friendly staff who were happy to help
Large room
Very clean
Nice beer
Good value for money

Negatives
A single mattress in room 19 that was about an inch thick
A tv so small it was like looking through a pair of binoculars

Unfortunately didn’t stay for breakfast, which has got great reviews on here previously.
Would say here again I think.

We booked this room so thatvwe could explore Galloway. The hotel is much in need of decorating from top to bottom. The main light in the room glowed when we turned in on. It then stopped working. The bed was uncomfortable. The windows, discoloured. What I predume to be damage to the wall was covered over with a piece of wood. The shower wasn't great but adequate. Plenty of hot water. Breakfast was a two course continental followed by full scottish breakfast or porridge. The lidd would only eat toast but there seemed to be a hesitancy to refill the toast rack.. Some chefs would cook poached eggs others wouldn't as one party found out one morning. Don't leave your shower on and open the door. One resident caused an impromptu fire evacuation.

My colleague and I stayed here for an overnight stop before the morning ferry crossing from Stranraer, and I was sceptical, because in the passed week I have stayed in some 'dives', but as soon as I walked in and greeted at reception, I knew that it wasn't going to be the case. The guy who greeted us was friendly and offered advice as regards to eating in the village, as it was a difficult time due to covid, there wasn't any places to go and dine, only takeaways, but never less he was very helpful and pleasant. We checked in and I was pleasantly surprised to see a high standard and quality room, which was a god send after our 8hr drive from Kent, with clean fresh towels, clean bathroom and a very clean and well furnished room with tea/coffee facilities, if I had one gripe, then it would be the Wi-Fi was a little slow & intermittent, but that's not the end of the world is it😉. In a nutshell I would recommend a visit here, I don't think you'd be disappointed, I certainly wasn't 👍.

Lovely traditional Scottish hotel with the most funny helpful staff. Manger a hoot and couldn’t do enough for you. The hotel is dated so not for those into Kardashian bling but really clean huge compliment to housekeeping. Sticky tables but that’s due to constantly cleaning wooden tables with anti Covid spray certainly not dirty. Breakfast wonderful eggs done however you want and toast refilled not problem plus refill of juices and milk etc etc. Very tasty. Family room brilliant and huge with two large rooms. Windows open easily and it was wonderfully airy in heatwave. Our shower was powerful. Had dinner there twice and really good. Thank you team Bruce hotel you were wonderful and made our holiday can’t wait to come back one day.

I booked two rooms for two nights at the Bruce hotel for my daughters, for my father’s funeral. First thing I was told was, there is no chef, so there will be no meals. . One daughter had to shower in my other daughters room because there was no hot water. The rooms were cold and in need of refurbishment. In fact , they were so bad, one daughter wouldn’t stay the second night. She traveled home to Edinburgh after the wake. £70 per night was extortionate. Terrible experience for my girls. This hotel used to be one of the best in town, but definitely not any more. Would never use or recommend again.

We stayed here for just one night with our two dogs as a stopover to break up a long journey. It isn't a luxury hotel, but was absolutely perfect for us. The room was spacious and, whilst it probably requires some updating at some point, it was perfectly adequate for our needs with tea/coffee, tv, comfy beds and ensuite bathroom. Everything was very clean. What made our stay was the host, who was friendly and welcoming and gave us local info if we needed it. Breakfast was great, and really tasty. I hadn't mentioned when booking that I was vegan as it's not a big deal for me to go without butter, milk etc. for breakfast, but had I asked beforehand they would happily have catered for this (and there are supermarkets just down the road if you need them!) We will absolutely stay here again if we're in the area.

Booked this hotel last year as it was central to an area myself and a friend were fishing. I had read the reviews online and with most being positive had no qualms. Arrived to a warm welcome, quick direction to the room an explanation of services available. The room itself was large, clean and perfectly adequate. Yes as previous reviews have mentioned, the decor is tired, carpets could do with renewing. The staff, manager and the willingness to help where possible outweighed any little and to be honest, irrelevant niggles. I don't think I would invest the sums of money needed just after a pandemic where visitor numbers still haven't recovered and bird flu is still having a large impact on what was regular income. As it was there were just three of us in the whole hotel. Due to this, Evening meal service was not on offer ( there are several restaurants available in close proximity which offer all that is required), but a full Scottish breakfast was, and very nice it was too.

The staff were amazing and could not have done more to help us. My daughter has coeliac disease and we arrived to find a menu telling us which were suitable options. Dinner in the hotel was excellent as was breakfast the next morning. When we said we were going to the Dark Park, the wonderful staff offered to fill up a Thermos flask with tea so that we could have a warm drink. It made looking at the Milky Way even more enjoyable! Such a lovely, friendly wee place to visit and we will definitely go back and advise others to do the same.

Check in is any time. There is always someone in the building. Before 11 just ring reception bell if no one is there and after 11 there is a phone number for access through night staff.
