We are pleased to say that the hotel is as nice at it was on our last visit. (18 years ago). Although the hotel is now under new ownership it retains the style and comfort that we always loved. The room is great and the quiet is very relaxing. Unfortunatly the Table D'Hote menu whilst being excellent is really for...

We appreciate the support of all our guests and their comments on our service. In response to the comment made here about the price of our meals and in order to give our guests more choice, the menus have been reviewed and following our 2015 January closure we have now dropped the Table D'Hote menu and introduced a new A...

We stayed here for two nights and were sorry it wasn't longer. Our room (19) was the best hotel room I can remember - spacious, comfortable, quiet and well furnished with a very nice outlook over the grounds. The staff were welcoming and efficient and the 'country house' atmosphere was a pleasant change from the kind of thing you usually...

My wife and I stayed here for three nights while we experienced venues at the Wigtown Book Festival - an annual must if you are a book worm! The hotel has recently changed hands but has kept the existing management team and country house style. The room, in our case room 9, was huge with a quaint but dated coloured...

Shown to a marvellous room (No 19), large enough for a king-size bed, sofa and armchairs and a variety of free-standing desks and tables. Excellent views on three sides to the gardens and beyond them distant hills; it was wonderfully quiet. There was a complimentary decanter of sherry. A personalised letter of welcome from the manager included a note that...

We had one night here visiting friends locally. Lovely old house. Bright spacious bedrooms, grand reception rooms, but it was the food and service that was exceptional. We had dinner which was really excellent. Perfect sized portions served by attentive friendly staff. Very good wine list too. Really good cooking. Breakfast was super too. Plenty choice. It was an inclusive packet...

This is a potentially wonderful place, the rooms we had on 2nd floor were huge, the lounge very grand, the staff very helpful, but there didn't seem to be anything "special". There was something of a faded grandeur about the building, and eating in the restaurant was not relaxing and too formal for our taste. It could be better with...

This is a fine old pile of a place, which has been lovingly restored to its original glory, and is now a good, traditional and stylish place to stay, within 40 mins drive of the ferries to Northern Ireland from Stranraer / Cairnryan. We did have a problem finding the place initially. Large it may be, but it's well hidden...

We'd eaten here a few times in past years, but never stayed until now. Old world standards of customer care & friendly courtesy suited us entirely from the moment we arrived and were guided to our comfortable suite until our departure 3 days later. Plenty of attention to detail with menus & the much better than average wine list available...

This review is not about accomodation but just sunday lunch. We wanted a "special lunch" as it was my husbands birthday and as this hotel offers "Gourmet Breaks" and has numerous framed "culinary awards" in the foyer we thought this would be a good choice but how wrong we were. Firstly we were surprised to find it extremely quiet which...

My husband and I stayed in July for 3 nights. The room we were given when we arrived was ground floor, we asked if we could change for a room with a view and it was no problem. Great room, great staff, food was lovely, hotel decor is from a time of elegance, meant as a compliment. Though dated it...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
A country house hotel, a former private mansion house dating back to the 1700's, sitting within 8 acres of its own gardens, a golf course adjacent. It is located near to the picturesque town of Newton Stewart built on the banks of the River Cree, and is within walking distance of the Galloway forest and hills. There is not only a variety of walks around the town and through the forest, but great cycling tracks as well. Slightly further away are a number of historical sights and the Machar Peninsular. On the Machar peninsular you will find the Booktown of Wigtown famous for its annual book festival, picturesque ports, a cave that was occupied by an early Christian Missionary to the Area, a bird sanctuary and the furthest south whisky distillery in Scotland. The Mull of Galloway, the most southerly point in Scotland, is not far away with its bird life and views to Ireland and the Isle of Man. If the magical village of Brigadoon was to appear this is where it would be. ... more   less
