THIS PROPERTY IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED. A country house hotel, a former private mansion house dating back to the 1700's, sitting within 8 acres of its own gardens, a golf course adjacent. It is located near to the picturesque town of Newton Stewart built on the banks of the River Cree, and is within walking distance of the Galloway forest and hills. There is not only a variety of walks around the town and through the forest, but great cycling tracks as well. Slightly further away are a number of historical sights and the Machar Peninsular. On the Machar peninsular you will find the Booktown of Wigtown famous for its annual book festival, picturesque ports, a cave that was occupied by an early Christian Missionary to the Area, a bird sanctuary and the furthest south whisky distillery in Scotland. The Mull of Galloway, the most southerly point in Scotland, is not far away with its bird life and views to Ireland and the Isle of Man. If the magical village of Brigadoon was to appear this is where it would be.

Detailed Reviews
If you are looking for unparrelled, yet unintrusive service with excellent food with spacious, individual rooms, no noise and situated in peaceful surroundings look no further - If you play golf then you have the added bonus of their sister hotel, the Cally Palace to play at... and seamlessly organised by the Kirroughtree Management team - a real "get away" from a stressful life.

Stayed three nights booking through hotel web site a three night b and b and evening meal package 23/24/25 August. After making contact with hotel they promptly telephoned back confirming availability I made small credit card deposit and was told it would be a ground floor room overlooking the car park - not a problem so happy to carry on with reservation. Later speaking to other regular guests learnt that the room we were staying in was a room they had used previously and appeared to be a room used by the hotel for guests with dogs. Not happy about that and would have prefered to have been told and would not have booked in. Having said that the room was clean and their was certainly no evidence of doggy attendance but this did conjure up thoughts of dogs lying on the bed spread which wouldn't have been laundered with every new guest and dogs with worms scratching their backsides along carpets etc etc - I hate dogs in hotel rooms.
Decor and furniture old fashioned but I suppose it was in keeping with building. Very large bedroom. Bathroom a bit worn and tired.
Food very very good both in the morning and the evening - better than my expectations and made up for any other short comings.
Staff came across very professional and tried to get to know who your were so no quoting of names /room numbers during stay which I liked as along as drinks etc were billed correctly which they were. No a bad stay all in all the food kept the rating up

We enjoyed a relaxing and fantastic nights stay. From start to finish the staff service was exemplary by greeting us at the door and showing us to our room. Also pre-dinner service drinks in the lounge and dinner service was faultless from staff who showed an interest in your stay. The food was first class, fine dining at its best, venison and bitter chocolate sauce was to die for! We ordered liqueurs to take to our room, by the time we climbed the stairs, they were there! The house was built in 1719 and keeps its period charm throughout the hotel, and the surrounding grounds are stunning. A fantastic internet find, they accept dogs in the lower half of the hotel, so we will be back with our four legged fur babies for another excellent break. Well done to the owners and the team, keep up the good work!

We were visiting the area to do some house hunting and as it was close to an anniversary we decided to stay somewhere more special, where we could relax after a hard day of trekking around the area looking at a variety of properties.
On arrival, we were greeted by a very efficient and friendly young lady who took us through a short and simple check in and showed us to our room (in the basement.) We later discovered thar the basement rooms were normally reserved for guests with dogs and the disabled! In and of itself this was not a problem until we realised that the room was rather shabby (worn through covers on the arms of the seats and slightly grubby carpets and a badly marked towel) and quite chilly, though we had been told that there was a fan heater in the wardrobe that we could use if it didn't get warmer later.
As we had arrived after 6:30 pm we unpacked and went for Dinner (we'd been asked, by e-mail what time we expected to arrive and if we'd like to book a table for our evening meal), this seemed like a good idea as we would be able to relax with a G&T pre Dinner and have a glass of wine with our meal.
We went 'up' for Dinner at 7:15 and perused the menu
(table d'hote) whilst enjoying our G&T's by the lovely open fire.
We were shown to our table in the large dining room to find that there were only two other guests eating that evening, we placed our orders and started with Prawn Cocktail, which we thought was rather nostalgic and a good 'anniversary' starter, Oh! dear it was quite unpleasant, rather acidic and with what were obviously frozen packet prawns. I followed with Duck which was rather tough in a boring 'Jus' and finished with Cheese board which had meagre portions of a sad collection of uninteresting cheeses. My wife had Sea Bass, again, of the frozen variety and a chocolate pot dessert which was also previously frozen though she said quite tasty. This was not a 'fine dining, experience and certainly not worth the almost £90.00 that it cost (inc. G&T and one glass of the House Red)
We returned to our, still chilly, room and decided we would read and do a little more 'on-line' house hunting - NO WiFi, (had we slipped back in time to the pre digital age?!!)
Eventually we went to bed to discover blankets rather than a Duvet and a rather hard bed with uncomfortable pillows from a previous era. By this time we certainly realised that we were 'below stairs' and would need to make the most of our circumstances and look forward to a 'new tomorrow'
Breakfast was OK. However on the next morning we asked for the Kippers as offered on the menu only to be advised that they didn't have any in the kitchen but that they would certainly have some for us on the next day, this sounded fine.
On the following morning we were given 'kippers' but they appeared to have come out of a packet and certainly not from the excellent 'Smokehouse' just a short distance away !!
We advised that we would not be staying for the 4 nights that we'd originally booked and that we wouldn't be taking up our previous reservations for dinner on the next 2 evenings.
Fortunately we found an excellent restaurant near the Bridge in town where the food was twice as good and plentiful at half the price with friendly service.
I've gone into more detail than I originally intended and with some trepidation, having read the responses from the hotel management to previous, less than glowing reviews, but I/we were truly disappointed with this stay, Not with the friendly and efficient staff that we met but with overall lack of facilities and poor food at high prices.
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Have visited same in the past - twice - and went for a third time in June 2015. Lounge needs redecorating and chairs reupholstered. Bedroom needs thoroughly spring cleaned. Menu poor and service in restaurant poor. How sad that the hotel has been let go.

Response from Autosc, Director at Kirroughtree House Hotel

Unfortunately we recently had a guest stay with us who was not happy with certain aspects of his room. When he brought this to the attention of the Manager he was offered another room. This offer was turned down and he told the Manager that he would stay in the same room. When he came to book out he asked the Manager for a substantial discount off his bill. When refused he said that he would write a poor review on TripAdvisor. Fortunately and more recently we have had other guests who have booked out of other hotels early and stayed longer with us.

This review is not about accomodation but just sunday lunch.
We wanted a "special lunch" as it was my husbands birthday and as this hotel offers "Gourmet Breaks" and has numerous framed "culinary awards" in the foyer we thought this would be a good choice but how wrong we were.
Firstly we were surprised to find it extremely quiet which seemed suspicious in peak tourist season and as we have never been here before were unsure of our surroundings so it would have been nice if there had been a member of staff available to welcome us, instead we felt rather akward standing around waiting to inform someone of our arrival.
The set 3 course Sunday Lunch menu priced at £29 per head consisted of 2 choices of each course which we found rather limited as there was no vegetarian option but realised that later that this may have been due to a lack of staff.
We did not enjoy our meals which were neither flavoursome, tasty or special and with a distinct lack of fresh vegetables, one dessert (egg custard tart with thick stogy pastry) was served cold straight from the fridge and left a lot to be desired. When asked if everything was alright I pointed out that I found the 3 tiny baby leeks I left on my plate (which were more akin to spring onions) were stringy and inedible but thought it a waste of time to even mention the dessert as the whole meal was such a disappointment on a special occassion.
After we finished we were not asked where we would like our coffee and had to assume that we were expected to vacate into the sitting area where we waited expectantly. When the coffee arrived it was served with cold milk and not even a little accompanying chocolate.
Total price for 2 meals and 2 glasses of wine £67.50 and all I can say is that we would have had a far tastier lunch had we prepared it ourselves!
Needless to say we will not return here again to dine

A bit pricey which made the small single bed and the cheap extras (tea/coffee and mint on the turned down bed) seem out of context and just plain penny pinching. Why in the 21st century do we need jackets for dinner?

We were celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary and had previously had a very pleasant 2 night stay almost three years ago. The driveway had several very deep potholes. However, on arrival we were greeted by a lovely member of staff who showed us to a really nice bedroom. She was also very helpful when we were unsure how to access wifi and later took time to show us the white deer grazing in the grounds.
Unfortunately we were the only couple for dinner. The menu was ok but not as good as we remembered. We were happy with our starters but disappointed with the main course, especially the single carrot and wizened green beans. I was unable to eat my pudding which was called Banoffi Roulade but had not one slice of banana (lots of greyish mush) and came 'bare' in the middle of the plate without even a mint leaf as garnish. My parter's cheese plate had rubbery cheddar, very chilled Brie and blue cheese. The waiter was unable to tell us what the cheeses were other than 'Scottish.'
Despite leaving my pudding, the waiter did not ask if everything had been ok.
We asked for decaf coffee. The waiter brought us a cafetière and 4 small hard brown triangles...... the 'petit foures' Despite leaving the coffee 6-7 minutes to 'brew' , when poured it was pale yellow. There appeared to be few or no grounds in the cafetière. We asked for another pot of coffee and were told we should have left it longer to brew. The waiter brought another cafetière and said that this time it was 'the real McCoy'. He took our cups away to wash, we assume. We felt really unhappy about his attitude and left to come back up to our room. We hope to be able to speak to the very helpful receptionist in the morning.

Response from Autosc, Director of Sales at Kirroughtree House Hotel
Responded 22 Aug 2016
We were expecting this review and note that the reviewer is a new recruit to the band of regular reviewers. It is unfortunate that this booking came out of the blue and for a night when our other guests were booked for bed and breakfast and did not take dinner. There were no other witnesses to the occasion. We do know that, the lovely member of staff, Heather, our deputy manager, asked them after the main course whether everything was alright and they said that it was. It appears that for some reason following this things went pear shaped. Two nights before I had myself eaten in the Dining Room with a considerable number of other guests and no one could fault the food. One of my party had the Banoffi Roulade and found it delicious. Yes things have changed from three years ago. We no longer supply a large dish of extra vegetables at no cost on request. Our aim is for fine dining and a changing menu. We did for a while have a chef who was only able to produce pub food and then we did have a number of justified complaints. Pub food is not in keeping with our hotel and those who prefer this can and do eat elsewhere.

A long time ago, this hotel would have been truly wonderful. Unfortunately, it has fallen on hard times, it is more like a museum. We had lunch, which was served by a friendly waitress. The food was dire. The atmosphere was like dinner on the Titanic. Very sad. The place needs a fortune to restore its former glory.

We wonder how accurate our reviewer's memory is after three months. The visit would have taken place following a complete repaint of the exterior of the building. We are a country hotel and do not compete with the glitz and hustle and bustle of a city hotel. We are situated on high ground within 8 acres of our own gardens. Like the building with its thick stone walls that have already stood for nearly three hundred years and foundations for even longer, the interior also contains items built to last, and not be consigned to the scrap heap every five years.

The first impression is of a rather dilapidated old building in need of repairs.
On arrival, a gentleman hurried us to our room and departed swiftly.
"Tea and coffee, await your arrival," says the brochure.
Well, there was an old plastic kettle, and when we turned on the 'cold' tap, to fill the kettle, out came hot water.
There were cobwebs above the curtains and stains on the carpet.
The inside of the bath was none too clean.
The dining room is somewhat gloomy.
Our first course at dinner was a teaspoonful of salmon and some mashed potatoes.
This was followed by some slightly tough poultry.
I got the impression that morale among some of the staff was not too high.
The main lounge is rather like a dark museum.
There appeared to be only 4 other people staying at the hotel while we were there, and they were all well over retirement age.
I am reminded of a 'five star' hotel in Malaysia which has seen better days.
It charged £25 for the room and half board.
Kirroughtree House is owned by a company which would appear to be short of money for refurbishment and which would appear to have laid off some staff.
I would suggest that the company should build a giant adventure playground at Kirroughtree, similar to the ones at Drumlanrig Castle or Cream of Galloway, to attract in happy families.
Perhaps some musical entertainment could be provided in one of the lounges.
The town of Newton Stewart is as dilapidated at the outside of Kirroughtree House.
Many buildings have cracked walls.
There is no longer a Town Council.
There is no railway station.
The museum is permanently closed.
The community centre is boarded up.
The tourist centre was closed when we visited.
The staff at the cinema were not very welcoming.
We were not allowed to use the toilet at the former Town Council building.
When we took a bus we found the bus driver to be excessively grumpy.
If this was Switzerland there would be a powerful mayor who would shake things up and the place would be buzzing.

I suggest that you ask the hotel!
We have 16 Bedrooms, so if you can confirm the numbers it would be best if you booked the hotel for your exclusive use.
To do this you should book and confirm early so that we do not take other bookings for your dates.
The formal rooms and grounds are an ideal backdrop for such events.
