Detailed Reviews
Although the outside could do with a lick of paint the inside is beautiful and the service is second to none. We arrived before dinner service and were greeted by a friendly lady on reception who welcomed us into the bar for drinks. Much appreciated after coming in from the cold and wind! Good range of drinks available and all in the correct glasses! Proper gin glasses. The food is very reasonably priced for the portions you get and everything was very high quality, lovely steak, pies and burgers! Staff were all very friendly and attentive but not overbearing at all. Lovely visit and lovely atmosphere. Can't comment on rooms in the hotel as we only came for dinner. Would be visiting regularly if we lived nearby but unfortunately we are up on holiday! Thank you!

Have just returned from a four night stay at The Crown Hotel, firstly its the friendliest place we have stayed in, the staff are fantastic, very welcoming. The hotel downstairs is lovely, nice little bar and lovely restaurant (very popular). The rooms upstairs although spotless need a facelift, it's tired looking and needs better mattresses, (great if you like a firm one but far too hard for one of us) the food is nice, especially the breakfast, best scrambled eggs ever. The hotel is ideally situated to explore the coast of Dumfries and Galloway and this place could be a little goldmine if some money was spent on the rooms upstairs. Overall a great stay, made better by the lovely staff.

Six friends and I recently spent a very enjoyable week at the Crown. The rooms are comfortable and quiet, and I always appreciate it when there are good-quality biscuits provided each day. We ate in the hotel every evening. Every single day every meal eaten was absolutely delicious. That includes the breakfasts. The homemade desserts (I loved the apple crumble) were amazing. What really made this hotel though was the staff. They are the best group of staff that I have every experienced in a hotel … and our group of walking friends goes away a lot. From duty managers Jake and Aaron to Doreen and Fiona at breakfast, every member of staff was welcoming, attentive (but not overwhelmingly so) and a true professional. The waiting staff were also amazing, particularly Sam, who at just 16 years of age was friendly and funny and able to create a fantastic rapport with customers who were over three times his age (us!). There were a few minor inconsistencies and inefficiencies – let’s call them quirks – but the hospitality sector is going through a very hard time right now and they might be partly due to that.
Newton Stewart has a bakery and is an ideal location for walkers. Just a short drive from there, we were able to climb some fantastic hills (the Merrick, Cairnsmore of Fleet and Corserine) as well as visit lovely towns such as Wigton (the book town). Mull of Galloway lighthouse is also well worth a visit.
Highly recommended. We will be back.

We arrived at 2pm the restaurant and bar was closed due to a flood, we tried at the neighbouring hotel which had no chef and the further neighbouring hotel has shut down permanently. The town has nothing to offer, very limited shops, bars, restaurants nowhere to even get a coffee during the day. The hotel room was very dated, more like a hostel than a hotel, the bed was a small double and was very uncomfortable. This is definitely not worth the price of £100 per night !! We were supposed to stay two nights but left a day early and drove 200 miles home to comfort. This trip was planned as a treat for between Christmas and New Year and was a complete flop. We enquired on the phone about a refund for the second night to which we were told we could have our money back, we packed up and at check out was told that a refund was not possible due to a 14 day cancellation policy! Not impressed at all !! Do not recommend and would not return !!

Where do I start? On arrival there was no one at the reception desk but there was a bell and I rang this several times before starting to tour the ground floor. I went into the empty bar and empty restaurant and called out to try to attract attention. Eventually I pushed the kitchen door open and called in there. Someone came out and was followed by another who told us where to park. We then took lunch in the bar and, after that, checked in. We were told that our room was upstairs and was number 9. We took our luggage up and opened to discover the smallest room we have ever found and certainly not one of the 8 rooms illustrated on the hotel's website. This room had a small double bed. It had a small wardrobe containing 3 hangers! The bathroom just about managed to accommodate the necessary furnishings. The bath was seriously chipped and the bath panel severely cracked! There were no tissues and no beakers. We thought to make the best of it and decided to rest after our 4 hour journey. As we dropped off there was the most horrendous noise to awaken us. This was the extractor fan from the kitchen. Under normal circumstances we could have closed the windows but, on a very hot day and in a very small room, this was not an option! It really was unbearable and we got up to go out. We alerted staff to our concern and were told that all rooms were booked and we could not be moved. As a parting shot, we were told we could have a drink at the bar! The fan stopped at 9.00 pm and we were able to open the windows and, eventually, get to sleep. After having been out on our second day we returned to find that the bed had been "made" but the undersheet had not been smoothed out, the bin had not been emptied and there were neither tea nor biscuits replenished. The next day the bin was emptied and refreshments replenished but the undersheet still needed to be straightened! This hotel would have scored less than 2 on every aspect of the scoring on Four in a Bed! On leaving I thought I would give the receptionist the courtesy of sharing my feedback prior to my submitting it. There was no one on reception on my departure!

Good Afternoon, It is with great disappointment to have received your review. i will try and address all your comments. During the day we have a day manager who oversees the reception area but also has various different duties throughout the hotel to cover then for the evenings our restaurant and bar managers cover the reception area. They would have welcomed you once they had finished their other duties as the staff are hard-working and complete tasks over and above what is asked of them. The rooms illustrated on our website are the rooms within the hotel, we find room 9 fantastic and cosy, and if you required more coat hangers staff would've been more than happy to assist with this request as well. We do run our evening meals from 5:30pm in the evening with our last tables being able to book in at 8:30pm. We are a busy restaurant throughout the year and this means we accommodate a number of people from the town and neighbouring area for evening meals. If you had asked about the fan a member of staff could've told you it would be turned off after our evening service had finished. I can only apologise for the small details you have put in your review and hopefully if you ever find yourself staying with us again or joining us for a meal we can show you the service we produce day in and out to ensure all customers and residents are happy.

we stayed here for one night on our way to the ferry at Cairnryan. The hotel exceeded my expectations. Our room was compact but had all the essentials. The lovely lady on reception gave us teabags, milk, biscuits etc as they are not allowed to leave in room. We ate at the hotel as the Chinese restaurant down the road was only serving takeaways. The restaurant has been tastefully made over - contemporary but with a nod to the historic past. Breakfast was good - we had to pre-order the night before but that was no problem. A different person was on reception in the morning but he was just as helpful. So I would recommend a stay here.

The Crown Hotel know exactly how to make you feel welcome, all their staff are simply first class. The food was Suberin, with a good choice of mostly locally sourced quality fayre. I will most definitely be back and can not recommend this hotel highly enough

Long weekend in D&G, we booked a table here for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. We have 3 dogs which were made welcome, as were we.
The staff kindly gave us a quiet corner table so the dogs could settle without bothering any other diners.
The staff are lovely (Chelsea looked after us for the first 2 evenings), the food is great and the restaurant itself is smart+ clean. A good choice on the menu + presented well.
Will definitely dine here again when we're back next year.

Warm welcome staff friendly and helpful. We booked a large room with bath. We arrived at 4pm and the room and bathroom were freezing cold, I went to tell the receptionist and was told the heating comes on at 4pm and people (Eskimos perhaps) had complained of the heat. There are no bedside lights, one central ceiling one that makes the room appear colder and one table light on the table with the kettle. The room also has the distinct smell of cigarettes.
However we had a fairly good meal in the restaurant and the staff were helpful and friendly.
Definitely not worth the £129 I paid for the room

Second stay at the Crown while visiting a friend in Newton Stewart. The staff here are absolutely delightfully and offer a really warm welcome. The rooms are very simple but comfortable and clean, and there's ample hygiene procedures in place (plenty of hand sanitiser etc.) to make you feel relaxed and reassured. Great breakfast too, will be back. Thanks to all the lovely staff for making me feel so welcome!
