The owner was out when I arrived but there was a message to come in and make a cup of tea. The owner was friendly when she turned up but perhaps could have done more to explain what facilities were available. I stayed in this hostel a couple of years ago and compared to that visit the hostel seemed a...

Stayed here for one night, after camping in Dartmoor. It has a really cute courtyard and quite funky decor. The lady who runs the hostel is very sweet and friendly. Stayed in a dorm.. which was clean and comfortable. Kitchen is well equipped and has pots/pans/cutlery that you can use. Would definitely recommend this place.

I was looking for reasonably priced accommodation close to the Two Moors Way which is not that easy to find and unlike the previous reviewer I was very appreciative of the owner who was happy for my son and me to stay even though she was away the night we needed to stay. Great little hostel in an interesting small...

In May/June 2016 I stayed in this beautifully managed hostel. It has a particularly cosy, fresh and roomy upstairs sleeping area with windows facing out on a charming enclosed garden that captures the sunlight. The bathing facilities are scrupulously clean and well maintained and the downstairs kitchen is spacious and welcoming. There is a special sense of peace and comfort...

Nice place with an artsy feel. Clean beds and facilities plus an amazing shower! The hostess was very friendly and helpful and was there when we needed her. Long story short, everything you can expect from a proper hostel.

Similar to previous reviews, we arrived at a deserted place today... This seems to be a real issue with this hostel. While I understand that the owner is not there 24/7, I expect someone to reply to my messages. When I made the booking several months ago, I agreed with the owner to text her our estimated time of arrival...

A couple of years ago we stayed here and found this place to be quirky but fun. This year it felt rundown and fairly depressing. The owner spent most of the time moaning about other people's negative reactions to staying there. True - it's fairly cheap and you get what you pay for in life, but Youth Hostels are about...

The room sleeps 14. There is one bathroom with shower. Everything is clean and the living areas are packed with local information. Moretonhampstead is very small, and Sparrowhawk is within 2 minutes walk from all the pubs and shop. There is no wifi and phone signal is sketchy.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Sparrowhawk Backpackers is a small, friendly, relaxed, eco-hostel, converted barn, more like a homestay, within the atmospheric Dartmoor National Park, Devon. Groups and individuals are welcome. An ideal base to explore all Dartmoor has to offer. The hostel is located in the village centre with several shops, P.O, cafes, info. centre and pubs serving good food/beer. There is a self catering kitchen, tea/coffee provided. Great place for cycling on and off road, hiking, climbing, wild swims, wildlife, archeology, high open moors and tors, chill out picnics by ancient woodlands, stone circles and rivers. Moretonhampstead is a lively village and home to many artists, craftspeople and musicians, so you may catch a music session in the pub and visit the gallery and studios. The bus stop is just 2 mins walk with frequent direct buses to and from Exeter. Trains - Paddington to Exeter, 2 hr. 15Min./ Waterloo- Exeter, 3hr.30Min. Bristol-Exeter, 1hr. The hostel also provides secure parking for bikes and motorbikes if you arrive on 2 wheels. Cars must be parked in the public car park (free at night). ... more   less
