On the idyllic and less-visited north shore of Lake Atitlan, Santa Cruz is an indigenous Kaqchikel village with around two thousand local inhabitants. This quiet village has long been a favorite destination for those in the know who want to get away from it all, and La Iguana Perdida is proud to have been active in the community here since we opened the doors in 1996. We’ve been an “eco-hotel” since before the term became popular, converted to solar in the last few years, and we’ve always been active in the environmental movement on Atitlan. The choice of lodging at the Iguana runs the gamut, from the original wood construction consisting of spacious dormitories, private rooms with shared bath and a rustic cabana, to the more modern side of the hotel where our luxury rooms include private bath, balcony and lake views. Shared bathroom facilities are scattered around the spacious property tucked behind the bouganvillas and banana trees. Our restaurant serves delicious breakfasts and lunches from 8am until 3pm daily and family-style feasts every night at 7pm often followed by activities like open-mic and trivia. All meals are prepared by the lovely local Mayan staff, and vegetarian, gluten free and other dietary restrictions are always available upon request. The climate (warm in the sun and cool in the shade) is perfect for whatever level of activity you’re seeking, even if it’s lounging in a hammock with a good book all day. Located right on the waterfront, La Iguana Perdida is one of the best places to enjoy the beauty and serenity that Lake Atitlan has to offer. Start the day with a yoga class on the patio overlooking the lake with the volcanos framed in the distance, then go for a kayak or follow shaded trails and paths along the shoreline for a dip in the magical waters of Atitlan. After a day of hiking or kayaking, fire up our traditional Mayan sauna or treat yourself to a massage with one of our experienced practitioners. There’s no reason to be bored even on a rainy day with our pool table, dartboard, book exchange and TV room at your disposal, and if you’d like to immerse yourself more in the local community we can organise backstrap weaving classes in a local home or one-on-one Spanish classes. We even have wifi now! If water sports is your bag, we are home to ATI Divers, the only scuba operation on Lake Atitlan since 1996. Enjoy a fun dive or take the four-day PADI Open Water Course and become a certified diver. Atitlan is a collapsed volcanic caldera with massive volcanic rock formations, fish, crabs and even volcanic hot-spots you can plunge your hands into. One of the few spots in the world where you can get the high-altitude specialty certification without freezing! We’re open to travellers of all ages, and with over twenty years in business we hope we can find a way to make your visit to Lake Atilan a memorable one.

Iguana is a lovely spot to stay on beautiful Lake Atitlan. The location can't be beat, & the grounds are very well-kept. The staff & volunteers are as eclectic as the lake itself, & are extremely helpful w whatever you need. There are many options for private rooms at the cost most places charge for a dorm, which is great. Though some might be deterred by the somewhat remote location, I found it idyllic & serene-plus the boats are super easy to jump on & off to visit the more bustling towns. The only slight downsides I would mention are that if you are staying in a room close to the common area, it can be a tad noisy (but nothing earplugs won't help), & that if you are lucky enough to get how water in the showers, it might not last too long. Overall, one of my favorite hostel stays in all of C. America :)

Thanks you very much for taking your time to write such a lovely review : ) We are very happy to know you had a great experience with our team and overall in La Iguana. This is what we are here for, to make people smile and have fab experience at this gorgeous lake. Also, we appreciate you mentioning our private budget rooms getting some more noise than the rest of our rooms & dorms. We are aware of it and we do ask our guests to keep it quiet after 10pm, although we realize that it doesn't always happen. On the top of that we have already been talking about a small reconstruction on these rooms to give more privacy and quietness to how stays there. Hoping to have you back anytime soon : )

Staff were really helpful and it's an awesome location right on the waterfront so you're basically there as you jump off the boat.

There were two minor issues when we were there, both nights we were woken by loud barking dogs and even cats which seemed to be in the hostel (as well as around). Also the WiFi wasn't working all three days we were there.

Would still stay again just bring ear plugs and check before if you need WiFi.

La Iguana Perdida is a hostel in which you feel very quickly at home, staff is super friendly, guests are nice and open-minded, ready to have a few drinks, explore the lake, and chill. Rooms are clean and well-decorated. There really is a great vibe in this place. And you'll want to try the rustic sauna :).

I'm torn on how to rate La Iguana Perdida. My husband gives it 2 out of 5 stars, I'd give it 2.5-3 out of 5 stars. We booked one of the private cabanas, the Atitlan room. The Atitlan room was large and peaceful, with a big peace sign shaped window and a lovely balcony with a hammock and some wooden lounge chairs.

The food was good and very inexpensive, as well as the drinks at the bar, and the communal dinner was a nice way to engage with other people staying, although I didn't like that there were spots pre-set with plates so you couldn't just settle down wherever. It makes sense logistically, I just prefer a degree of flexibility. No harm, no foul. The property itself is well maintained, and the garden is so pretty! It's obvious that a lot of care and planning went into making the hostel look and feel casual and comfortable, especially since they seemed to have gotten almost all their textiles from the artisans in Santa Cruz. Very cool that they work so closely with the community. :)

Unfortunately, those pros were overshadowed by cons for our particular stay. The first and foremost issue was that through our stay, the sheets on the bed were never changed from the last people who stayed there, despite us asking 3 times to have them changed. That meant we were sleeping on sheets somebody else had slept on, which was just kind of unsanitary. I don't mean to sound snobby, but I really wish they would have at least offered to give us a new set so we could change them ourselves. I had read in a prior review that somebody had ants in their bathroom, which was the case in our bathroom as well. I understand that we're in a teeny tiny town in a developing country and that we should expect some bug friends, but there were A LOT of ants. Like, a constant train of ants moving along the edges of the room, climbing in and out of the sink, and up the toilet. We also never got clean towels, which wasn't a huge deal, but it was on trend with the place just not feeling as clean as it could have been.

Finally, I just didn't feel very welcome in general. The hostel felt very cliquey, and only a few people seemed friendly to visitors. I chose this hostel because it has a reputation for feeling like family, but I honestly felt very judged and got a cold vibe from a lot of the people there. Dinner made this especially awkward and ended with a panic attack for me, unfortunately.

Located in front of the port, La Iguana Perdida is a place where you immediately feel comfortable. Eric and the others are great hosts and all you need they will help you with. Btw if you consume more than a 1000Q you get a nice t-shirt of the hostel.

Rooms are very clean and cosy!

Thumbs up!

Really genuine place. Took some getting used to since there's no hot water and the WiFi only works in one place in the whole hostel, but it's a great place to disconnect and the family dinners every night are amazing and great value for money at only 65Q for a 3 course homemade dinner.

The only downside is that the laundry service lost quite a few of our clothing items, but that's no fault of Iguana Perdida since the laundry is an external service. The hostel was super helpful and made up for it.

The place is amazing. I went solo, but I really felt part of a kind of community within the hostel. The location of la Iguana is privileged with the view of the 3 volcanoes on the shores of the lake, in addition there are many activities to do in the surroundings. Special mention to the volunteer team for being so great!

We stayed here two nights on the stunning lake Atitlan. Hell of a vibe in the restaurant of a night time they do open mic night on Wednesday and that was really good fun even if we did butcher Tom Jones after about 10 cans and 4 shots of tequila. However the rooms are spaced around a fairly large site so if ya wanna get ya head round I wouldn’t worry too much about noise it’s very much separate. We got along brilliantly with the staff they were all very friendly and great at their job. Especially the manager who knows the place like the back of her hand! Would really recommend! It gets full here so make sure you book in advance

I have been going to La Iguana Pérdida for 20 years now for a reason. There are other lovely hotels on Lake Atitlan but it is always La Iguana I go back to as a refuge from travel and work and the world. The owners and staff have always been incredibly welcoming and friendly and it has among the best views on the lake (and that’s saying something!) The Iguana provides an amazing blend of being able to do all sorts of things or simply lie in a hammock and watch the clouds and rest.

The first night I wanted to stay (Sat) they were booked solid but offered me a hammock 🙏 which was generous but ended up staying next door.

Sat night is The night.. With live music, costumes to borrow and the communal dinner. I had a great time at the bar and the drinks were great and cheap.

I reserved a bed in the tree house which didn't have electricity and shared with 4 others. It was my first time staying in a tree house and it was fun. Temp was great, very few bugs. Comfortable bed and if I remember correctly it was like 50Q. The shared shower was electricand typical.

The bartenders were fun andthe oowner very friendly. I had a great time. The diving was good enough to say that you dove Atitlan but I didn't do a second tank.. I dive lakes and quarries a lot but it just wasn't that exciting (I dove in May of 2019)

Great views of the lake and volcanoes from la iguana.

Santa Cruz does not offer much butit is worth going for the night
