The authentic feel of a true refugee is fantastic. The location is great for those looking to summit the Imbabura Volcano or hike in the crater lakes. The owner is a guide and knowledgable source. The hostal's atmosphere makes guests feel they are in a mountain retreat, complete with a huge fire place.

Came up for the weekend to hike with friends. Emerson is a wonderful host and fabulous guide. Him and his gorgeous dog, Isaak, took our party of 6 up to Cimbuche for a morning hike around the crater lakes. The whole experience was great. The facilities at the Refugio are very cosy. I really like the relaxed vibe. An added...

This is a fun, quirky hostel with such hospitable owners! We were a bit nervous when we arrived because it was almost midnight and many hostels close up in the late night. Thankfully, Emmerson, one of the owners, was waiting for us right at the door! He was so friendly and so fun to visit with. He is also a...

La Esperenza is a little piece of paradise only 10 minutes away from Ibarra. The family is truly adorable and will make you feel at home! I keep only good memories...

Stayed here with a friend for two nights and hiked Imbabura one of the days. The owner, Emerson, drew us an easy to follow map to the summit, and arranged for a truck to drive us to the trailhead in the morning. The hike was amazing and I'd highly recommend it! The beds were comfortable, the rooms and common areas...

This hostel is so vibrant and homie! There is so much art and character in the building. The outdoor and indoor fireplace were great hangout spots to relax or just catch up with friends/other travelers. Being so high in the mountains it gets chilly at night so pack accordingly. The wifi was great and we loved the music in the...

Had a great stay with a friend at the Refugio. We wanted to climb Imbabura, so were looking for a place to stay in La Esperanza. All our internet research pointed to Casa Aida, but couldn't get in touch with anyone there. We found the Refugio on Hostelworld and booked it, and are very glad we did! This hostel is...

I spent 2 nights at this place. It was really nice sitting around the fire in the evenings while it was raining outside. Emerson is always around and has the answers of all your questions! Emerson and his mum are very helpful, friendly and always smiling 😊I stay there one day again!

Great family & staff. Interesting variety of travellers here. The guide service and hiking opportunities were outstanding. The complimentary breakfasts included juice, coffee, and some kind of bread along with whatever "Mama" chose as the daily 'desayunos'. Dinner meals were $3 and were always hearty and tasty meals
