Blessed with a beautiful view, Sagara Candidasa is a boutique hotel facing the ocean on Bali’s picturesque East Coast. With just 20 well-appointed rooms and supporting facilities, this smart seaside retreat is all about affordable luxury. It is a place where, as a carefree traveller, you can escape the crowds and unwind in true tropical style by the beach.
Took our usual 3 day break from Legian, and this time took ourselves to Candidasa. Stayed at Sagara. Bit disappointed. If “Boutique” translates as small, then they have it right. There are 20 rooms at the hotel, but the property isn’t big enough to support that many. The rooms are very good, although minimal tea and coffee provisions. The pool area, whilst also very nice doesn’t have enough lounges, nor the room to place them anyway. Same applies to the restaurant.. If all the guests wanted to eat at the same time, impossible.Food is good, but small serves. We found that all the other guests at the time were European of some description, who steadfastly refused to smile, and also the TV in the room was heavily Europe/Asia oriented. The staff were all very young, very helpful and pleasant, although their English was somewhat limited. The most sad feature, though, from our point of view, was that there is NO beach option. The infinity pool looks straight over a sea wall to the water. We had visions of laying on lounges on the sand, but it wasn’t to be. We thought it was a tad overpriced all round, and not the vibe of a place which would be favoured by Aussies. In a word. “NO”.…

Beautiful, clean hotel - the rooms were very well equipped and pleasant to stay in. Lots of space and a big bathroom. The hotel was in a great position with a lovely restaurant and pool area. Great, quiet place to stay - we had a 9 year old with us and she enjoyed it however it’s definitely more of an adults only hotel.

Dear Greg M, We love reading your comments, once you like our products and services. Our place is easy to reach and close to shops for personal needs. If you dig deeper, this village offers many unique temples that are very charming and Balinese. I will inform you of the location via a separate email. Thank you once again, please share your experience with us and we look forward to seeing you soon. Kind regards, Gede Hendra.

Lovely boutique hotel with amazing views from the infinity pool and restaurant. The staff were always helpful and smiling. The ground floor room I had was large and spacious with extra big bed and fluffy pillows. The bathroom was nearly as big as the main bedroom with separate shower, toilet and a stand-alone bath. The pool area was good never had a problem getting a sun lounge.Pool could do with a hand rail for getting in and out especially for us older generation. The only thing I could fault was where you locked the door from the inside was difficult to get too with the desk nearly to the door. Overall I had a lovely restful stay

We only stayed one night as part of a 14 night island hopping tour but would love to have stayed longer. The pool area is lovely and the bar has a great view over the pool and sea. Although you couldn't see the actual sunset, the colour of the sky changed every minute or so which was beautiful to watch. There's a limited number of sunbeds and as we arrived in the afternoon we weren't lucky enough to get one and we left early the next morning but it's a lovely area to relax. We went for a walk and had dinner and drinks in local restaurant and bars. Overall a lovely hotel with very friendly and welcoming staff.

Dear Clubfiz, Thank you for the comments given. We are happy to know you like our products and services. Candidasa Beach touches the hearts of Sagara customers who stay even though the beach doesn't have a sunset but the sky changes colors when it's beautiful with cocktails. An easy place to find but far from the crowds of other tourists. We hope that you will share this experience with your closest friends so that we are better known. Thank you once again and looking forward to seeing you again. Kind regards, Gede Hendra.

We enjoyed our stay at the Sagara Resort in Candidasa as part of a 10 day holiday in Bali. We had stayed previously a couple of times at the Alila Manggis near Candidasa and wanted to return to the east of Bali. The hotel is built in a very contemporary style which is pleasing to the eye. I like the clean lines and the use of elements such as wood, stone and metal. The reception area is a lovely airy space that is quite welcoming on arrival at the Sagara, so first impressions are good. The check-in was handled very efficiently and we were shown to our room #102, quite close to the lobby area. The room was very comfortable with a great bed and very efficient air-conditioning, both important in being able to enjoy the room. The desk space was good but there were relatively few outlets for laptop, phone chargers etc. We needed an adaptor which was delivered but it didn't really seem to fit and kept falling out, which was a bit annoying. The lighting in the room was fine and the selection of TV channels was okay- at least they had AXN! It would be nice if they had a few other channels such as HGTV, Lifestyle or the Food Network for international travellers. The main problem has to do with the design of the room with its open concept bathroom which may sound like a good idea but in reality can be a bit problematic. I may be old-fashioned but I still like having a door on the bathroom when I am getting ready in the morning, even if the other person in the room is my partner. Anyway, we coped with the open concept and on the whole the bathroom was good- nice shower stall, WC and wash basin with lots of counter space. Our wash basin drained very slowly for some reason but that wasn't a major problem. We loved the pool area of the hotel and the restaurant Flamingo in particular which was a delightful space with nice tables overlooking the beautiful infinity pool and the sea. From the restaurant and pool you have lovely views of Nusa Penida in the distance. The staff at the restaurant were charming and helpful although some of the younger members probably need more English lessons to allow them to cope with the demands of international travellers. The breakfast selection was quite disappointing and this is an area that the management needs to review in order to improve it. We tried several of the breakfasts over our 4 days in the hotel and none of them were very inspiring. The so-called 'Big Breakfast' really wasn't big at all as it was exactly the same as the Eggs Benedict but with different kinds of egg preparation. The pancakes were very strange- very rubbery and not particularly pleasant to eat. The French toast was very minimalist and there was no sign of the bread having been soaked in an egg/milk mixture before being fried. The Indonesian breakfast was average- nothing remarkable. Perhaps the management should consider having a semi-buffet model for breakfast where guests can help themselves to fruit, juice and coffee and then order their main dish that is delivered to their table. These days it is so easy having a coffee machine that allows guests to make their own cappuccinos and lattes rather than having to rely on staff to refill cups. I felt a bit sorry for staff who have to run upstairs to the bar to get things that should be located on the ground floor. We had one lunch and two dinners at the hotel and they were all very nice- the Welcome Dinner of Balinese specialities was lovely and we enjoyed sitting outside in the evening- a wonderful location for dinner. We enjoyed our time by the pool and the nice loungers with lovely views out over the Lombok Strait. The pool itself was very nice but with one major design flaw. The steps leading into the pool are actually quite deep and there is no railing to hold onto when getting in and out of the pool. Obviously you have guests who are Senior Citizens like myself who have health issues such as arthritis and for whom getting in and out of a pool can be rather problematic if there is no railing to hold onto. When I was getting out of the pool on our second day at the hotel I fell and injured my leg as there was nothing to hold onto apart from my partner Alvin who did his best to save me from falling. Luckily another one of the guests came to the rescue and they eventually managed to get me on my feet. My leg was quite bruised and is still a bit sore even 10 days after our visit. This would not have happened had there been a simple railing to help guests in and out of the pool. The other area that is problematic for Senior Citizens and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) is the front entrance leading from the car park to the lobby. Once again there is no railing and nothing to hang onto so it was difficult for me to access the lobby. Luckily the steps leading from the lobby to the path where the rooms are located does have a railing. The other major problem in the hotel is the pathway that leads from the lobby to the ground floor rooms and the pool area. It is made of large flagstones with gravel/stones in between. It is very difficult to navigate for most people and almost impossible for people with mobility problems. I stumbled several times during our stay in the hotel but my partner was there to catch me! It really is an accident waiting to happen! It would not be difficult to have a normal concrete/brick path which would be much more user-friendly. It seems that aesthetic appeal is of greater importance to the management of the hotel than guests' safety. I should think, given the number of Senior Citizens and PWDs travelling these days, hotels should make guests' safety a priority over aesthetics. This is definitely an area that the hotel owners and management need to address as a priority. I have written to Gede Hendra Puspawan, the Operations Manager of the Sagara to highlight the issues that I have raised above but as yet I have not heard back from him. I do hope that by making people aware of the problems in the hotel and the potential dangers to guests, something might be done to correct the problems I have indicated. On the whole they are really quite an 'easy fix' and would not cost the property much money. In my opinion it would be money well spent to make the hotel a safe and pleasant place to stay for all guests. I would like to give special mention to a lovely young man called Adi who works at the front desk who was always charming and helpful with some of the issues we had. He was also the person who helped my partner and I celebrate our 17th wedding anniversary by providing a lovely plate of strawberry cheesecake that was delivered to our room on the day. Many thanks to Adi for his kindness and efficiency- he is a real asset to the hotel. Would I come back to the Sagara? I think that would very much depend on the management's ability to correct some of the issues I have highlighted in my letter to the Operations Manager and in this review of the hotel. It is a lovely hotel that could be even better with a few easy changes. …

Dear Jamesinmanila, Thank you for the very detailed and constructive comments. We list them one by one and it is very possible that we will update them because we also get these from our previous customer comments. Handrails for swimming pools and TV channels will be our priority to hold. besides that, we will adjust the quality of the food served to suit needs such as Mini Buffets to make it easier for customers to reach them quickly. Once again, thank you for the good input and we will follow up soon. Greetings and looking forward to seeing you again. Kind regards, Gede Hendra.

Beautiful place and rooms, very friendly staff, nice view from the pool. Good area with lots of restaurants around. We haven't found a good spa within walking distance though… Breakfast is very average and the pool is cold as it hardly gets any sun. Unfortunately, there's no place to hang clothes / swimwear at all and they don't dry in the room, even under the aircon. Cocktails are bland, though that seems to be a common problem in most places. The bathtub is not closed off from the room, just a half partition – didn't disturb us as a couple but may be a problem for others.
