#12 of 44 in Arpora
Nilaya Hermitage is located on the hill tops of Arpora, North Goa with a stunning view of the Arabian Sea and the Arpora Valley. The 33 meter swimming pool rises out like a blue lagoon amongst an award winning Moorish architecture. The Boutique resort naturally blends into the landscaped gardens and the surrounding forest that gives a surreal effect of being away in a different world where quietness is what you breath. The food is predominantly continental and is prepared lovingly by our master chef with more than 15 years of hosting the discerning traveler.

This resort is almost there in terms of being a boutique offbeat luxury place. The rooms are fantastically designed, perfect for a hermit seeking luxury! It's perched on top of a mountain with a rustic, Jungle feel. Everything in and outside is classy. The staff and help are very cool, well spoken and friendly (but not too friendly which is perfect). What didn't work for me was the vast number of ants and insects inside the room, the fact that it's a little far from all the action, the broken approach road, and the average food (6/10). Another thing, although small - once you're out of the room, you're out. Then, you can't even ask for a bottle of water unless you pay for it. That did leave a bit of a bad taste. I'd stay here only with a big group, with alcohol and games smuggled in. Because on its own, it's a bit boring and overpriced.

After the lockdown,we planned to go to goafor a weekend. Nilaya is just wow in its own way. Lush green nature, on top of a hill of Arpora. Rooms and specially the staff was just great.A must visit place if you are traveling to Goa and looking for peace and a quiet stay. All rooms are well dressed and every room is different. It's a boutique resort. The food was the best. To talk about the pool and the sunset view is just amazing. It was a perfect destination for relaxing....

This was to be the second hotel we stayed in on our visit to Goa, somewhere quiet and relaxed with a little bit of something special - or so we were led to believe. Nested at the top of a steep entrance road with spectacular views to the west over Arpora towards Baga, the location and rooms looked wonderful. We were the only guests though (alarm bells tinkling) and so were given a choice of rooms and chose the spectacular Art Room though we had some reservations around the ‘outdoor’ shower room/toilet and the wooden slats which we were assured wouldn’t have any amphibian visitors. We took a dip in the very cool and deep pool before relaxing on the terrace. We needed to order our evening meal early so they could get/prepare it!! (Alarm bells getting a little louder). After a shower and cooling off, I revisited the shower room/toilet to find a frog there - my wife has a phobia of them so I tried removing it but failed. Eventually we found an attendant and they managed to get rid of it - only to find a second. Then four lizards came out of the A/C at which point we said we HAD to move. We were offered a ‘sealed room’ - suffice to say it wasn’t. And in-between, the meal we had was distinctly poor. (Alarm bells ringing loudly now). We ‘slept’ in the Sun Room - the A/C was extremely noisy and kept stopping every 10 minutes - suffice to say that by the morning we weren’t relaxed. And after another four geckos & Lizards, they finally admitted that none of the rooms were ‘sealed’ - they could be (we’ve stayed in the Amazon and Africa and never had a problem) but closer inspection revealed that the maintenance of the place was sub-standard. Nothing fitted. Nothing was finished. The grounds could be spectacular, they aren’t. The birds and the wildlife outside were good up to a point but you couldn’t strike out anywhere. Even though we were just outside Arpora, there wasn’t a walking short-cut available and you had to use their taxi. It was very isolating and with no-one else there, an odd, relatively expensive and uninspiring menu, it wasn’t the luxuriant spot we were led to believe. Service wasn’t great and though the various people were kind and tried to do something to help, they couldn’t. If you want a place away from it all in eclectic surroundings with sub-standard, expensive food and don’t mind creatures IN your room (fully expect them outside), then you may like it here. It could be great, BUT......
