The Derwent was the first place we stayed in South Africa. The lounge area was stylish and comfortable with a decked balcony next to the pool enabling you to have breakfast outside, and gentle African music giving added ambience. Tea, coffee and cake were available at all times and included in the price, as well as port and sherry for...

A few months ago I was getting some flak from a workmate about taking advantage of TripAdvisor without contributing myself! Well, our stay at Derwent House has spurred me into action. If you are like me, and you scour TripAdvisor for reviews from people local to you -in this case Scotland - then take assurances from this one. This is...

We stayed at Derwent House for 7 nights and used it as a base for visiting Cape Town and surrounding areas. We loved every minute and can't wait to return. Jo and Carol have created a peaceful hotel with stylish decor and interesting pieces of African art. We immediately felt at home. The clientele was almost all couples while we...

Our trip to Cape Town started at the International Airport with Tania - our driver laid on by the hotel to meet us off the flight. Tania provided an interesting and informative ride to the hotel. I had not been to Cape Town since the early 90s so it was good to see some significant differences. Tania updated me with...

My wife and I are almost speechless after three wonderful nights at this most charming B&B. The Derwent House has it all.....beautiful decor, scrumptious breakfasts and afternoon teas, attentive and constantly smiling staff, owners with a sense of humor, and great location. Top notch accommodation from which to explore the gorgeous city of Cape Town and the southern Cape.

We stayed 6 nights at Derwent House and could not have been happier. Our room, though smallish, was extremely comfortable. There is a huge lounge/sitting area with free internet access and lots of interesting reading material, so there is no need for a big bedroom. The breakfasts were delicious, and we loved the fact that cake and tea/coffee were available...

The main downside to this hotel for us was the size of the bedroom. We stayed in room 2 which was very small and cramped with not enough room to leave a suitcase on the floor. The room had a bath tub and shower over which is not even in a tiled area so the whole floor gets soaked. To...

This was our first time in South Africa and on arriving at Derwent House at 10.30 on the first evening we were not disappointed. Jo and Carol were excellent hosts and took time throughout the day to ask what we were planning and to make recommendations regarding routes, restaurants and trips. The other staff are friendly, polite and professional and...

I agree with all other comments in the Excellent category. I would like to add that we particularly appreciated the expert help Jo and Carol gave us with our Cape Town plans. They booked a memorable visit to the Langa Township on Sunday so we could visit a Church Service. They booked every excellent restaurant, cabs, plus our transport from...

Spent 3 nights here recently, and it is a lovely little guest house, tucked away on a quiet road off the trendy Kloof Street. Rather than echo lots of the previous reviews, which are all very accurate, I'll try and focus in on a few other bits that people might find useful. 1. We stayed in Room 7. It was...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
In a city renowned for hospitality, Derwent House stands out as one of Cape Town's leading boutique guesthouses. Located in the heart of the vibrant Tamboerskloof/Gardens neighbourhood, this small hotel combines historic charm, contemporary Afro-chic style and all mod-cons for a uniquely Capetonian blend of ambience, warmth, and comfort. Our wonderful team completes the picture -- we go the extra mile for you and our guests leave as friends. We love colour and celebrate African design - you'll find it everywhere. But when it comes to the basics - like breakfast, bedding, showers, climate control, Wi-fi or news from home - we don't compromise so you don't have to. At Derwent House, you're steps away from the hustle and buzz of Kloof Street, with its collection of superb restaurants, bars and trendy boutiques--and just a few further to the nightlife hub of Bree and Long Streets. Yet just a short car journey from the Table Mountain cable car, the beaches of Clifton or Camp's Bay, and the V&A Waterfront. There's nowhere more central -- but come and see for yourself. We're waiting for you! ... more   less
