"Mount Sheba Nature Reserve is a beautiful and serene gem hidden in a natural rainforest near the historical town Pilgrim's Rest in Mpumalanga. Mount Sheba is home to the rare Samango Monkeys only found in rainforests. There are eleven accredited walking trails to choose from, some of which take you to magnificent waterfalls and breathtaking views. The Knysna Turaco and Purple-Crested Turaco peek at you around every corner in the rainforest. Breakaway to this precious gem where nature is untouched and where time stands still, where peace and quiet rules and where no one will be surprised if a fairy peeks around the corner." Well-appointed rooms, gourmet meals, and log fires give a magical feel to Mount Sheba.

The first 7km gravel road is very rocky but if you travel slowly, it passes quickly. Sit back and enjoy the ride, it is part of your holiday! The last 3 km is nice near single lane tarred down in good condition, going steep down to resort. It is amazing how nature suddenly changes, like a new world unfolds. It looks out of place- like it belongs in a coastal area. Suddenly all is green and lush forest- 1950 above sea level! We found plenty giant Quteniqua Yellowwood trees at this level, could not believe my eyes. The cottages alongside the rain forest makes for a beautiful setting. We were allocated C3 which was in centre of 2 other cottages. (Later on that…) At first the kitchen seemed very small, but the homes are well very equipped and furnished, with log fires (with glass doors- very little smoke) in the lounge and bedroom. Bathrooms are well modernized with wall heaters. All were well cleaned, even the windows. The window openers are shiny, cleaned with Brasso frequently, wow! The staff are very friendly and helpful, not the typical SA service! I must mention the drinking water from taps is from heaven, must be the purest water we had in years. Even the ice made in freezer looks like pure crystal, zero sediment. It is better than reverse osmoses water!

We stayed in a one bedroom chalet. The chalet was one of the best equipped self catering units we ever used in South Africa. It was like home away from home. Everything you can think of was available. The only negative was the access road. We travelled in a hatch back and it took quite some hammering on the dirt road. A 4x4 or SUV would probably do better.

We needed accommodation in May around 7pm on a monday night. We were stranded as the management from Crystal Springs asked us to leave their accommodation on check in as my brother had booked a 6 sleeper unit and Crystal Springs only allow 4 adults and 2 children in a 6 sleeper. They will not allow 5 or 6 adults in a unit even with zero children. The staff at Crystal springs were rude would be too polite to describe them. The management even argued with us . It was the last thing we needed after a long drive from Rustenburg. Management asked us to leave the premises as they were fully booked. The staff at Mount Sheba were friendly and attended to my pregnant wife and I needs. We stayed the entire week at the resort and my brother and his brother ended up joining us on a daily basis as they could not enjoy the surroundings as they were continuously harassed by the monkeys at Crystal Springs at their unit. Mount Sheba is a hidden jewel. The facilities are clean and maintained. the units are serviced on a daily basis. If you would like a hassle free holiday then I would recommend Mt Sheba. Quite, serene, beautiful views and nature untouched.

Spent an unforgettable midweek at Mount Sheba. From the moment we entered the gate we were greeted by friendly faces. Our cottage was very comfortable and super clean, the fireplaces created the perfect setting. The view is magnificent and our hike in the rainforest was the cherry on top. The food was delicious. I will definitely be back. I rate Mount Sheba 5/5.

35 years ago we spent our honeymoon at Mount Sheba. In celebration we decided to take a trip down memory lane. What a special place. Log fire, hot water bottles in the bed, friendly staff & good food added to our amazing stay. We were also surprised with a bottle of champagne at our dinner table! Thank you for making our stay so special!

My wife and I enjoyed our holiday at Mount Sheba. Here are the few things we were happy with:- 1. Reception - on our arrival we were received by a friendly security at the gate and the lady at the reception area was also very friendly. We definitely felt her warm welcome. She really made us feel comfortable on our arrival by making sure she explained all important things we needed to know. 2. Facility - nice and simply built cottage. We enjoyed a fully furnished cottage. As a result we enjoyed the self catering. The fire place was a blessing during that cold last week of June. 3. Room service - We were impressed with the daily room service from one of the friendly workers - a very kind lady. She came to our cottage every morning, ever smiling, to make sure our place was nice and clean. We enjoyed a constant supply of wood from her to keep our place warm. 4. Tuck shop - The tuck shop was very useful for buying few things like bread, etc. We enjoyed our visit, we'll definitely come back with our kids in the next winter or possibly summer.

Mount Sheba Resort is a jewel after a rocky ride on a gravel road (sadly under maintained by government). The views and rainforest are spectacular. The staff are welcoming, friendly and efficient and made our stay a pleasure. We stayed 3 nights in a gorgeous secluded cottage with the best equipped self catering facilities ever! Also excellent Wifi and TV bouquet! Being a busy weekend, the staff were a bit overwhelmed by demand at the restaurant and could have done with more help, the food is wholesome but a little old fashioned. Next time we’ll try for a longer stay at this beautiful resort and try out the facilities on offer. This time we were exploring the enjoyable attractions in the area.

The Rainforest must be the first notable attraction to be mentioned at this lovely, old retreat which nestles within the Mount Sheba Rainforest. Mount Sheba 19/04/2022-22/04/2022 Trial one :Old Diggings We are never the best equipped hikers, but set off at 9.30 for our Rainforest hike, spirits soaring, tummies full and knowing that we would soon enter an enchanted forest. Hike one - the Old Diggings trial...enter an alternate universe (my husband's observation), where the offshoots from tree trunks are frozen into forever acrobatic poses. Branches form arches, fairy rings which doubled over, you pass through. The trees twine and twist together, silent dancers, clad in costumes of dense green moss. The air is champagne, clear, ever moist, the fine precipation a gentle, ever-present mist. Trail 2-The Gola-Gola 11 river crossings, huge, majestic boulders, moss-clad too, slippery, ancient and watchful. Like mountain river guardians they lie, to see the waterfall, they must be conquered first. The river crossings were made far more challenging and exciting because the heavy rains have partially covered many of the rocks where the guide ropes have been strung. At times, you find your own boulders and rocks to create a river crossing. We set off at 9.30, we completed the hike at 15.45 - just over 6 hours of being immersed in a wonderland of ferns, tiny, delicate flowers, gnarled trees, trees arching, trees reaching skywards. Meals :Supper The Chandelier Restaurant exudes charm, serves delicious meals and boasts a lovely fire place, courteous service and a warm atmosphere. At the time of writing this review, the cost of the three course meal was R240. 00 per person. Our supper included a Butternut soup starter with dainty rolls, we selected from three options, the sole. It was delicious and accompanied by lovely sides. For dessert, you also have three options to choose from. Breakfast We enjoyed breakfast at the Chandelier restaurant. Loved the chunky doorstep toast served with real butter and an assortment of jams to select from. A must for the Eco-tourist and for anyone needing pure serenity. Simply sitting outside at night and just staring up at the most starry sky, is a special reward in itself.
