We went to the Royal Hotel to celebrate my mother's 83rd birthday with family. As the family all stay in Benoni, they enjoyed the tranquility of the Hotel - away from the hustle and bustle of city live. We found the staff extremely friendly and helpfull. At the time of making the booking we were experiencing loadshedding and I could not access my emails. Desmond at reception sent the invoice via whatsapp and we had a smooth booking expereince. This is truly a business were the people are equipped to build the business.Even the security guard assisted when we parked our vehicles. The whole kitchen staff sang Happy Birthday to my mother on her special day. What an expereince! The Royal Hotel in Pilgrims Rest is a true example of hospitaly! Thank you Neels Janse Van Rensburg for your contribution to the lovely memories made at the Royal Hotel.…
Awesome stay at the Royal Hotel. Authentic victorian style decorated rooms. Awesome Bar that makes you feel at home. Secure parking. Good food at the restaurant. 100% would come again. Staff friendly and helpful in all aspects. Good to know there are still gems like this around.
We 4 had a lovely 2 night stay here. On arrival we asked if they had accommodation available in the main hotel as we were booked in one of the annexes. No problem, the lady at reception moved us. One staff member ran down the street following us as we left, with a pair of binoculars we had forgotten in the bedroom.
We tagged on a visit to Pilgrims Rest, after visiting a game reserve in the area. The surrounding roads weren't great (we spent about 40 min at a road block, but at least they are attempting to improve some of the roads!), but we were pleasantly surprised by Pilgrims Rest upon our arrival. The town is quaint and the locals friendly and there has been a good attempt to keep it in period with the gold mining age. A local dog was our new friend for the duration of our stay and we enjoyed a drink in one of the local pubs and eateries. The hotel room itself was lovely - clean and decorated in the period. Our lounge area smelt a little musty, perhaps the rooms can be aired before occupation. We had plenty of hot water for our bath, but our travelling partners were in a different annex and only managed a luke warm bath. Otherwise all good!…
We had not stayed in Pilgrims rest overnight and decided to do so on our way to the Kruger. It was worth the detour. Friendly staff and quaint rooms all decorated in time period theme. Hopefully tourist start arriving again soon as it would be a shame to lose this colourful history.
So, right outside the entrance there are people who wash your car without asking and then demand money. I brought this up with reception who said, 'They won't ask for money'. They did and will. This left me with a bad taste and I shall not visit again.
Very oldschool town and hotel, very unique Bathroom & bath is awesome The hills, people and surroundings are magnificent Bed, for my 1.93m it is to small as are many beds in South africa...(we got a double this was not long enough) Unfortunately there was nothing to do in the village around our time.
Staff lied about ongoing powercuts when we arrived, saying it was loadshedding. Rooms are not linked to the generator and theres low or no cell service in rooms. NO free wifi and NO private parking as advertised. Not a family friendly or safe environment. Restaurant staff got our order wrong and we ended up having to pay for the most expensive dish on the menu due to a ‘mistake’. Worst travel experience of my life.
he rooms are in good condition - fresh and clean despite the hotel being quiet for so long and still recovering from the fall-out of Covid. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The barman (Ken) entertained our group well and made for a fun evening with our friends. Parking (secure) was easy and spacious and covered. The coffee provided in the room could be of better quality but was not a problem. We didnt eat at the hotel but our friends staying with us couldnt finish their breakfast, so this clearly requires attention.
Friendly staff, fantastic breakfast. Clean, well kept facilities. Highly recommended for a day visit when exploring the Panorama Route. Please support the businesses in Pilgrims and Lower Pilgrims on your next visit. You will not be disappointed.
