I stayed here for one night on a family trip. The hotel is beautiful and I really enjoyed relaxing at the pool area. The wifi is only in public areas which I found out of the usual compared to other hotels we stayed at. We also had an issue where the shower water wouldn’t turn off, but staff was quick to move us to a new room. I was disappointed that the bar and restaurant were closed during our stay, and we were told by staff that the hotel is more for groups than solo travelers. However, staff offered us rides to and from a nearby restaurant for meals for a small charge. The room was a unique thatched roof hut which was fun. It was not a bad experience and would be 4 stars, but was slightly lacking compared to the other hotels I stayed at in SA.
Absolutely loved every minute of our stay. Surprised by the beautiful chalet we had. I was not expecting a stand alone chalet, very private. The other surprise was the wonderful view from the balcony over the Sabi river, where 2 hippos strolled by. Elephants from the camp opposite came down along the river with their mahouts Was a perfect position only an hour from Kruger where we were heading The staff were extremely friendly, helpful and kind. Went the extra mile The room had a comfortable ultra king-size bed the bathroom was big with a double shower there was a fridge, very useful as we had provisions we were taking to Kruger. A mini kitchenette added to the comfort. there was a loft room with extra beds and further views
If you do anything, make sure you eat in the restaurant. The food is akin to a 5-Star restaurant. Close to Kruger and Elephants and Hippos in the back yard. Get the river view chalets, worth it! The staff was incredibly accommodating and welcoming. Again, the food was fantastic!!!! Thanks to the team, Penny, Ephraim, and everyone else... If you are organizing a tour to Kruger, use Shinzelle Safaris, request Docter as your guide. This is how we found Hippo Hollow. Danielle was great booking the Tour and Stay. If you stay at Hippo Hollow, there is a nice, little shopping center of "tourist" gifts next door at the trading post.
Situated close to Hazyview Spacious accommodation and large walk in shower with double shower heads Elephants roaming on site was awesome and entertaining Only amenities were two swimming pools Garden chalets facing the pool has no TV Hotel rooms have TV with limited channels Friendly staff Free wifi Delicious breakfast Chalets facing the river have crocodiles and hippos are spotted as well Close to Kruger national park
The best stay we've ever had! The customer service was fantastic and the staff was so helpful. Given the current circumstances many resorts service bland and average food however the food here was beyond amazing! The facilities were great and the place itself is so beautiful. I would stay here again every opportunity I get!!
We had a wonderful stay at Hippo Hollow. Our first day there we were blessed enough to witness both a group of elephants and two hippos. The accommodation itself is very clean and had a beautiful balcony to enjoy the view with. Small details were missing, for example a plug to charge our phones / laptops next to the bed would have been nice and the bedding wasn't very warm, considering that we visited during winter. Other than that the staff was very friendly and there are a few restaurants close to the estate which were really nice. Over all we really enjoyed our stay and will happily stay there again!
we really enjoyed our time at Hippo Hollow. The staff has been super kind and professional, preparing a special welcome to us in the room as we were just married. Atmosphere is very relaxing, you can enjoy breakfast looking at the river and if you are lucky spot some Hippos. The night was amazing, there has been a dance show from locals dancers and amazing special food options like Crocodile and Worms. Everything was super fresh ! Just a paradise in the middle of south Africa ! very recommended!
Located in the Hippo Hollow Country Estate on the outskirts of Hazyview the property's restaurant is a charming place with a terrace overlooking the Sabie river. Lunch was rather unique and mouth watering (particularly the dessert). I do strongly advise anyone to have a meal there if you happen to be in the area.
We went to Hippo Hollow during the day to see if we could book a table for that evening. Not only did they book us in, they showed us around (and we got to watch some Elephants across the river) and then convinced us to join them for their entertainment (traditional dancing) and buffet. We arrived later, not knowing quite what to expect. The entertainment was great and the food was excellent - I think possibly the best meal we had all trip. Would definitely come back again!
I first stayed at Hippo Hollow about 10 years ago when also traveling for business and loved it. So when I found myself in that neck of the woods again, I thought I would go back. All that has changed is the size of the establishment. It is substantially bigger but equally better. The staff were superb, there was a delicious glass of iced tea at the gate for me while my reservation was processed and off I went to me lovely cool air conditioned chalet. I had one overlooking the pool on a lovely sunny day. The property is also situated very close to the Kruger National Park for game lovers. There are three restaurants on site that could cater for my vegan requirements and I chose the main one with a buffett of Salads as starters. There was also soup. This was followed by a delicious vegan curry and a variety of desserts. Scrumptious. It was a little cool that evening so I did not sit on the deck overlooking the river where there are real hippos 🦛 but I did sit on the deck the following morning for breakfast. So beautiful. It is still a delightful treat to stay there and I am so pleased that it is doing so well and is so lovely. It has become fondly known as the ‘happy hippo’ between colleagues and I from 10 years ago and I am happy to report that it remains the happy hippo for me. A beautiful place with beautiful people. A must.…
