We spent 3 days in Malala Lodge, for the Easter holiday. The lodge was very clean, comfortable and pretty, eventhough there is not much light. Grazers roam the property, so it is very exotic for Europeans! We loved having our own cottage and having the impression of being miles away from everything and everyone - yet the bar was only... This was our second visit to Malala Lodge and we intend to return often. The Harvey family are the perfect hosts providing everything we could wish for, and breakfast and dinner are delicious and plentiful thanks to Jane & Paul. Pre-dinner drinks in the well stocked bar are lots of fun thanks to barman Pete who also doubles as ranger... More

Visited in Feb 2012, we stayed 5 nights. Warm welcome, not the most modern room but comfortable and has everything you need. Not a criticism but be aware toiletries are not provided in the room and lunch is not available so advise you stock up with essentials before you arrive. Pete, Jane and Paul are great hosts, always ready with... More

Dear Adrian, Thanks for your review - we're very glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. Thanks for your point about lunch, and it may be worth pointing out for the benefit of other readers that there are a few lunch options: firstly, one can get lunch in the town of Hluhluwe (15mins away); secondly, there are... We stayed at Malala Lodge for 3 nights on our tour of South Africa last November. The beauty of this Lodge is its remoteness, with wildlife passing through the grounds regularly – while we were there we were surprised to see a few zebras galloping into the grounds - they stopped for a bit of a graze, and then galloped... Dear Peter, Thank you for taking the time to post a review – much appreciated. We agree that the privacy/remoteness of our units is one of the appeals of our lodge. As regards your point on the lack of wi-fi, we certainly understand your frustration. We are also well aware that more and more guests are looking for this facility... More

We have been to places offering more luxurious environments, but this one is right up with the best for making you feel very special. The Harvey's are incredibly good hosts who know exactly how to give you tailormade advice for your stay in the Hluluwe area, provide tasty home cooked food and just give you that priceless home from home... January is not the best time to see game in Hluhluwe and as the Umfolozl was flooding we couldn't access the Umfolozi section. Only a few white rhino, several giraffe, zebra and a dagga boy. However Malala gave us some special moments with our 3 year old grandson and 9 month old granddaughter, with numerous dung beetles, frogs, a tortoise,... More

I booked the 3 night safari special and stayed at Malala just after the big rush of the summer holidays were over and the place was so peaceful. There is some wildlife around the cottages, even 5 Zebras. It is also a perfect base to explore St Lucia, Cape Vidal and the Imfolozi Game Reserve, which I found even nicer... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Malala is a bush lodge on a 140 hectare (340 acre) private nature reserve, accommodating a maximum of only 18 guests, thereby ensuring a tranquil African bush atmosphere and experience.
Our lodge is located in the Hluhluwe area, in the centre of the Elephant Coast in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. We are ideally positioned between the world-renowned Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve, Mkhuze Game Reserve, Sodwana Bay and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.
Malala has been owned and managed by the Harvey family since 2001 and we, together with an enthusiastic team of staff, are always on hand to provide the personal attention one would associate with a small intimate lodge.
Our property has a variety of vegetation types, including lowland forest, woodland, grasslands and wetlands. You can enjoy a leisurely stroll through these diverse habitats on well-maintained and marked walking trails. You may come across some of our game, which includes Zebra, Blue Wildebeest, Impala, Nyala, Reedbuck and Red and Grey Duiker.
In addition, Malala Lodge is at the centre of the birding hotspot of KwaZulu-Natal with over 500 species of bird having been recorded in the Elephant Coast area. The Malala Lodge birdlist currently has over 270 recorded species.
The main thatched lodge is centrally positioned within the camp and overlooks indigenous forest. Here guests can enjoy a relaxing drink in the cosy bush pub or take a dip in the palm-fringed swimming pool.
Meals are available, by prior arrangement, in the lodge dining room:
- Dinner is a home-styled three-course set menu with cheese and biscuits and tea/coffee; and
- Breakfast is a full English breakfast including cereals, fruit salad, yoghurt and tea/coffee.
Adjoining the dining room is a small reading lounge where a variety of magazines and books are available for your interest.
Malala Lodge can accommodate guests on a self-catering basis or, if you would prefer, indulge yourself in genuine home-cooked meals in the attractive thatched dining room.
Our accommodation, which nestles within the forest fringe, comprises:
- Four private, thatched, open plan chalets all with en-suite shower facilities. The chalets are 1-bedroom units which can accommodate 2 adults, or 2 adults and a child. All the chalets come with fully equipped kitchenettes, ceiling fans and braai/barbeque facilities.
- A semi-detached chalet equipped with en-suite shower facilities, separate lounge, kitchenette and ceiling fans and braai/barbeque facilities. The chalet accommodates two adults sharing.
- Two family cottages each comprising two bedrooms (en-suite), lounge and kitchenette and equipped with ceiling fans and braai/barbeque facilities. These units accommodate family groups of up to 4.
- A family cottage comprising two bedrooms, bathroom, lounge and kitchen and equipped with ceiling fans and braai/barbeque facilities. This large unit accommodates a family group of up to 5.
All of the accommodation units are supplied with tea/coffee facilities and all linen and towels are provided.
We provide game drives, by prior arrangement, in our open game-viewing vehicle into the world renowned Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve, providing guests with a superb opportunity of viewing a multitude of mammals, birds, reptiles and plants.
Other activities include:
- Self-drive day trips to the parks and beaches of St. Lucia, Sodwana Bay and Cape Vidal for boat cruises, kayaking, snorkelling, diving and whale watching.
- Walking and horse trails through nearby parks and reserves.
- Cultural Zulu Village tours - gain firsthand knowledge of traditional Zulu culture and lifestyle.
