It was a great 3 days. The inclusive trip into Hluhluwe was fantastic as well as the boat trip on lake St. Lucia. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and the meals are outstanding.I would not hesitate to return there.

What an unimposing, quiet and peaceful place to stay. The personal touches are there but for the most part you are alone with your own thought, totally at ease with the natural environment. Breakfasts are more than adequate and very satisfying. We never had dinner but I'm sure they would be awesome given the dedication to the lodge and it's...

Malala lodge is a great place to discover the bush! We enjoyed the warm welcome of Jane, the wonderful diners prepared by Paul and the wonderful drive we had with Peter. The forest trail is a good way to discover antipopes, zebras, nyalas, monkeys and many birds living in this wonderful "garden". Really an enjoyable place for taking a rest....

This was our 9th time staying at Malala in the past ten years. Has been a favourite of our kids and they constantly ask when we are going to go back. Paul, Jane and Pete are excellent hosts. I'm sure we'll be back again!

Thanks, Glenn. We've literally watched your children grow up over the years! And, even though they're obviously much older now, they have retained their love of the Zululand bush and wildlife which they had when they were small. Look forward to seeing you all again next year. We stayed in one of the nice cabins - bedroom, bathroom and kitchenette. We had breakfast and dinner in the dining room. The food was prepared by the owners and was very tasty. Peter took us on the game drive. He is a great guide and we had a fantastic experience and got to see many animals.

You are in the bush, fighting you way through the sandy road, what experience! Owners are friendly, food delicious and game ride out of this world. Due to small acreage and fencing is possible to go for a walk through the bush and any time.

Thanks, Walter - much appreciated. I think that by the end of your stay you had become a complete pro on the sandy road! Thanks for raising the point about our property. We have a 140 hectare (340 acres) reserve which, unlike many others, has no dangerous animals on it so one is able to walk everywhere and enjoy the...

Excellent food, super nice people, comfortable, clean and quiet lodging - just wonderful. My niece's 29th birthday occurred while we were tere, and I had asked them to have a lion cake made for her. The cake was absolutely perfect, and they even had ice cream, candles, and a "Happy Birthday" sign out for her!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Malala is a bush lodge on a 140 hectare (340 acre) private nature reserve, accommodating a maximum of only 18 guests, thereby ensuring a tranquil African bush atmosphere and experience.
Our lodge is located in the Hluhluwe area, in the centre of the Elephant Coast in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. We are ideally positioned between the world-renowned Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve, Mkhuze Game Reserve, Sodwana Bay and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.
Malala has been owned and managed by the Harvey family since 2001 and we, together with an enthusiastic team of staff, are always on hand to provide the personal attention one would associate with a small intimate lodge.
Our property has a variety of vegetation types, including lowland forest, woodland, grasslands and wetlands. You can enjoy a leisurely stroll through these diverse habitats on well-maintained and marked walking trails. You may come across some of our game, which includes Zebra, Blue Wildebeest, Impala, Nyala, Reedbuck and Red and Grey Duiker.
In addition, Malala Lodge is at the centre of the birding hotspot of KwaZulu-Natal with over 500 species of bird having been recorded in the Elephant Coast area. The Malala Lodge birdlist currently has over 270 recorded species.
The main thatched lodge is centrally positioned within the camp and overlooks indigenous forest. Here guests can enjoy a relaxing drink in the cosy bush pub or take a dip in the palm-fringed swimming pool.
Meals are available, by prior arrangement, in the lodge dining room:
- Dinner is a home-styled three-course set menu with cheese and biscuits and tea/coffee; and
- Breakfast is a full English breakfast including cereals, fruit salad, yoghurt and tea/coffee.
Adjoining the dining room is a small reading lounge where a variety of magazines and books are available for your interest.
Malala Lodge can accommodate guests on a self-catering basis or, if you would prefer, indulge yourself in genuine home-cooked meals in the attractive thatched dining room.
Our accommodation, which nestles within the forest fringe, comprises:
- Four private, thatched, open plan chalets all with en-suite shower facilities. The chalets are 1-bedroom units which can accommodate 2 adults, or 2 adults and a child. All the chalets come with fully equipped kitchenettes, ceiling fans and braai/barbeque facilities.
- A semi-detached chalet equipped with en-suite shower facilities, separate lounge, kitchenette and ceiling fans and braai/barbeque facilities. The chalet accommodates two adults sharing.
- Two family cottages each comprising two bedrooms (en-suite), lounge and kitchenette and equipped with ceiling fans and braai/barbeque facilities. These units accommodate family groups of up to 4.
- A family cottage comprising two bedrooms, bathroom, lounge and kitchen and equipped with ceiling fans and braai/barbeque facilities. This large unit accommodates a family group of up to 5.
All of the accommodation units are supplied with tea/coffee facilities and all linen and towels are provided.
We provide game drives, by prior arrangement, in our open game-viewing vehicle into the world renowned Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve, providing guests with a superb opportunity of viewing a multitude of mammals, birds, reptiles and plants.
