I've spent somewhere over 6 years travelling, and this is possibly the best backpackers I've stayed in. The rooms are cute, bathrooms more than adequate, the swimming pool wasn't getting used much in mid-winter but is obviously a good feature, and the setting is very tranquil and relaxing. Best of all the two ladies who run the place - Ntando... More

I recently stayed for three days at Hippo Hide with my wife. We had a lovely time, and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The rooms are clean and spacious, and the toilets and bathrooms are great too. The staff really impressed me with their friendliness and professionalism. And Michelle the owner is a bundle of laughs. I would definitely recommend Hippo... More

Very quiet place when we were there. Didn't meet many people there. Not really the place for those looking for a nice bar and people to have adventures with. A nice quiet place for those who like that kind of thing. Their sister backpackers was very nice though.

Hi Petped, Thank you for reviewing the Hippo Hide, I think you have hit the nail on the head with your description. It is a quite place where people can catch up with themselves after long journeys on the road. Unfortunately being situated in a residential area dictates the type of entertainment we can provide, we do have a honesty... More

The Hippo Hide is a backpackers lodge but there is a small little room in the garden that is well worth the money paid. Clean, comfortable and well looked after. There is an ensuite toilet and shower. There is a kitchen in the main house if you want to self cater to save money. There was tea and coffee in... More

Staying in Durban was one of the best experiences here in SA so far! We stayed in the triple room which was very clean and comfy. Wifi is included and worked perfectly! It's a place very bad maintained which could be way better than what it is. The location is alright if you have a car as it is in a. Ice area but a few minutes drive to the beach. Common areas are not nice at all. Everywhere is dark, almost no light in the kitchen and dining area.

Hello Pato C, We are a little bit confused with your review, yes we realise that some things might need updating but to say it 'very bad maintained' is factually incorrect.. There is plenty of lighting around the lodge as this is a safety issue. We are bound by municipal laws which include adequate lighting. We are sorry that you have... More

The Lodge is very homely place. We were here on an extended stay working in the surrounding area.
