I used to live in Joburg, so decided to stay at the Munro as a unique joburg experience. The welcome was warm (no checkin, taken straight to room), the Baobab room was extremely comfortable and beautiful (including the view of green Joburg) and the bathroom was elegant and huge. The service was very personal and friendly. The breakfast was a bit lacking but still served in a very elegant dining room. All in all, a great experience!

Having owned restaurants for the past eight years, I have found that in the majority of my experiences of visiting various hotels and restaurants around the word I have been left less then satisfied. This cannot be said for The Munro. From the moment I first made contact with Sue I was impressed and it was evident that there was a tremendous amount of love and pride for their business which is unfortunately something that so many places lack.
Upon arriving we were greeted by Dimitre and we immediately felt welcome and at home in this
special place. Although unnecessary and way beyond any expectation, your gesture of giving us Room 1 was greatly appreciated and really was something that made our stay that much more special. Throughout my life I have been privileged enough to visit over sixty two countries and throughout my travels, I have been able to eat at many of the worlds great restaurants including several two and three Michelin Star restaurants. I take my food very seriously and part of my job as a restauranteur is to dine out as much as possible to see what others are doing. Trust me when I tell you that the meal that Dimitre prepared for us was by far the best cuisine that I have had in Johannesburg ever. The combination of subtle flavours and textures that were presented on the plates were a true demonstration of an absolute passion for food and a seamless execution of skill. The Tomato Consumé with the delicately pouched egg ranks up there with the best dishes I have ever had. Truly Remarkable!
The establishment itself is magnificent and you have somehow been able to combine understated
sophistication with a touch of opulence that makes for a very unique and viscerally pleasing experience all around. The location is perfect and the views are breathtaking.

I have held off sending this review in the hope that someone at the Munro would contact the family to answer some of the queries put to them - but to no avail.
I recently attended a wonderful wedding held at The Munro Boutique Hotel. What a gorgeous venue- pity the Management and Staff do not live up to the high expectations that are in keeping with the costs and location.
Fortunately the Bride outshone the shortcomings of the hotel - although I felt for her Mother and Father who had planned everything meticulously - only to have the hotel disregard all their wishes!
From the hotel side -the food was excellent but the rest of the wedding left a lot to be desired. Staff had been hired in who were inexperienced - at one stage I, personally, tried to assist in getting the carefully chosen wines to the tables at the same time as the food! Specific instructions given to the hotel were not followed - the list is endless.
I am delighted that most of the guests did not notice the shortcomings - but there were a few glaring mistakes, which the Management should address urgently.

I stayed at the Munro for 2 nights and I also had my wedding there.
-Lead up to wedding was horrendous due to poor change management processes
-They double booked my room and accused me of incorrectly booking the room
-Did not brief the staff on the day of the wedding so service was shocking
-There coordinator did not show up on the day
-A table was not set up and had to be set up during the speeches
-They claimed we had no wine or champagne to serve
-Food took 2 hours to come out
-Waitrons rude to my guests
-Waitrons would take food from our dessert table
-Management was nowhere to be seen
-Welcome drinks were incorrect
-Inefficient management
-All areas we were using were dirty
-They sent us a non-itemised bill which they expected us to settle immediately

Response from MunroBoutique, Public Relations Manager at The Munro Boutique Hotel
Responded 12 Oct 2016
Thank you for taking the time to review our property, your feedback and input from our guests is vitally important to us. This helps us to identify where we can improve. Please allow me apologise for the sudden change of Management that impacted your experience. Unfortunately a tragedy such as this cannot be foreseen. The Munro Boutique Hotel has built it's reputation on hosting magnificent weddings with a team that will do everything in their power to ensure that our guests have a wonderful experience. Providing our guests with the best hospitality experience has always been our mission. We are extremely alarmed by your statement regarding our waitrons being rude and taking food off the table as that is one of the main criteria's where we get the very best feedback on our friendly and helpful staff. Our staff members take their roles in our industry very seriously and try, everyday to provide that quality customer service that our guests expect. We sincerely apologise that this trying time affected your day. We appreciate that we cannot get it right all of the time but would hope that when we make a mistake, we really try to rectify it. We have also, never in all of our years ever had a review like this or have this happen, as you can see from all of our recent reviews where guests have thoroughly enjoyed their stay with us and complimented our service and hotel. Please be assured that we have enlisted the very best in the industry to take the reigns while we wait for our management to recover. We would like to help you resolve this.

This is probably One of the most beautiful boutique hotels I’ve ever been. It’s Very stylish with stunning designs and lots of character.
I stayed in the Acacia Suite which had a tub and a balcony.
I took an Uber from the airport and it was about 30 minutes ride. The neighborhood seems to be residential. Very clean and quiet (not much to do around, but i took Ubers everyone).

For breakfast I had to choose from the menu and they served it to me to the dinning room.
I didn’t see any other guest

Neg:
1. They hosted someone’s bday party while I was there so I couldn’t have dinner in the dinning room and the music was playing until midnight . No told me this was happening or apologized for that in advance . So it was quite frustrating knowing that i needed to wake up early for a flight.
2. I wish they gave me some guidelines about the hotel (breakfast time, how to order it, pool time opening / closing/ etc....)
3. Very few outlets in the room. Was challenging to find one to charge.
4. Couldn’t switch on the a/c so it got very warm at night.

Despite the neg, if I ever come back to Johannesburg, I’d probably give the Munro boutique hotel another chance.

Excellent Hotel with exceptional views. Enjoyed our stay but concerned that at the rate they are increasing their rates they will outprice themselves from the market. In June 2015 the Presidential Suite rate was R6050.00 per night and in March 2016 it was R15400.00 per night - not sure how they can justify this increase in such a short period of time? I appreciate the fact that they honoured their original quote, but many who heard the current rate are going elsewhere. It appears that due to the rand-dollar exchange they are concentrating on the overseas market and neglecting the local market. I hope they review this decision so that South Africans can also enjoy the beauty of our land.

My bride and I stayed at the Munro for our wedding night. The Hotel itself is splendid with a perfect view of Johannesburg. However the service is terrible. Nobody answers the phone, nobody available to assist you when you arrive, security guard slept during his shift (02h00 in the morning when arrived there after our wedding) and it took me 3 minutes to wake him up to open the security gates while my bride had to wait in the car. I also asked for an early breakfast at 07h00 since we had a flight to catch. The person that eventually helped me with the early check in assured me that would not be a problem. However the only thing we found the following morning was a very dirty kitchen (apparently they had a party there the previous night) and one guy in the parking area that do not know anything about our breakfast. I felt ashamed and very disappointed to say the least.

Rarely have I stayed in a nicer, more hospitable hotel. The proprietor, Mark Kaplan, has created something special. The rooms are all spacious and beautifully decorated, with all the amenities you could need. The staff is wonderful and accommodated all of our various needs. Breakfast was great and served in a spacious dining room by an incredibly nice staff. I mention Mark specifically as he went out of his way to help us with a 'forgotten' bag. He drove our son, late in the evening of our arrival, to the Jo'burg airport to retrieve his bag at a car rental agency. Didn't have to, but that's the kind of service he gave us. Everyone on his staff was ready to provide that kind of service.

The hotel is decorated beautifully with a unique and warm elegance, making a guest feel comfortable the moment you walk through the front entrance. I say 'entrance' because you walk into a main entranceway that rivals great mansions throughout the world. The views from the hotel's backyard are the finest I've seen in Jo'burg from any hotel there.

If I lived in Jo'berg and wanted to have an event there, this is the perfect location, spacious, grand and inviting.

I cannot say enough about this hotel or its staff. Definitely would stay there again. My entire family feels the same.

Wow - I have often stayed in various hotels for business trips to Johannesburg which included weekend downtime. This last trip I was blown away by the hospitality and the venue of the Munro! The hotel sits on Houghton Ridge with breathtaking views and 1 minute access to the M-1 highway which is very useful in Joburg for getting around. I have stayed in Sandton in the past but the traffic there is horrible whereas the Munro is an oasis with instant access to everywhere that matters. I also held meetings at the Munro which the locals enjoyed and were happy to meet there. The suite and accomodation was incredible. Spacious with excellent bedding. Great value for such an awesome product. The Breakfast on the Terrace by the rim flow pool overlooking the incredible view was a show stopper. The Spa was under construction at the time but I look forward to using it on future visits. I have now found my hotel for future business or pleasure visits to Johannesburg - whether business or pleasure.
