It was wonderfull! Ian is the best host you can wish for.. Only good words for him, his family, the beds, the food, the place itself, everything. It feels like home so we went back and cant wait to come again! Laura and Danny

We were in a group of 15 people. Were stayed on this place for 2 nights. Really nice crew, good rooms, clean, not very big but comfortable. It is very near from a shopping center and a street with some restaurants and pubs. From the pubs street to the hostel we paid like ZAR20 by UBER.

The Birches Backpackers atmosphere is very good! It's located in a green area of Johannesburg and it feels like home. Ian was always very helpful and polite. The room and bathroom are comfortable and clean just like the commom areas. Besides he provided a great breakfast (including a delicious bread) with many vegan options. I had a good time there!

A host can make or break any stay and Ian definitely makes it. Not only does he make your stay as comfortable and simple as possible you leave wanting to call the place home. Ian is a fab cook and you can participate in communal life as much ss you please.

Really friendly and helpful family! Not only did they organise Ubers for us, they also gave us tips for our trip and local info. The hostel has a lovely garden, good food (you can cook for yourself or pay a bit more to eat what they prepare), fast wifi and Netflix all for a great price! Highly recommend!

We stayed at the birches backpackers in June and were very happy throughout our stay. We stayed in a double room with communal bathroom which was clean and spacious. The hostel was easy to find and had secure parking. Breakfast was good- homemade bread each morning, jam, spreads, yogurts, filter coffee and fruit. 5 very friendly and cute cats! An...

With one exception, this is without a doubt the single best backpacker's hostel in South Africa (and indeed, one of the best I've stayed in worldwide). Ian, the owner, is terrific. He goes way above and beyond to ensure his guests have a wonderful stay (he even cooked me a perfect medium rare steak that I bought from the supermarket)....

The place was nice and comfortable and the owners were very very friendly. The room was good although the wooden floor was a bit creaky which is normal. It is situated in a safe and serene environment.
