A host can make or break any stay and Ian definitely makes it. Not only does he make your stay as comfortable and simple as possible you leave wanting to call the place home. Ian is a fab cook and you can participate in communal life as much ss you please.

Really friendly and helpful family! Not only did they organise Ubers for us, they also gave us tips for our trip and local info. The hostel has a lovely garden, good food (you can cook for yourself or pay a bit more to eat what they prepare), fast wifi and Netflix all for a great price! Highly recommend!

We stayed at the birches backpackers in June and were very happy throughout our stay. We stayed in a double room with communal bathroom which was clean and spacious. The hostel was easy to find and had secure parking. Breakfast was good- homemade bread each morning, jam, spreads, yogurts, filter coffee and fruit. 5 very friendly and cute cats! An...

With one exception, this is without a doubt the single best backpacker's hostel in South Africa (and indeed, one of the best I've stayed in worldwide). Ian, the owner, is terrific. He goes way above and beyond to ensure his guests have a wonderful stay (he even cooked me a perfect medium rare steak that I bought from the supermarket)....

The place was nice and comfortable and the owners were very very friendly. The room was good although the wooden floor was a bit creaky which is normal. It is situated in a safe and serene environment.

This is probably one of the nicest hostels I've had the pleasure of staying at. Ian is very friendly and extremely helpful, and really pulls out all the stops to make sure that his guests have a safe and enjoyable trip to Johannesburg. The dorm room was clean and comfortable and the wifi was fast! I didn't get the chance...

We enjoyed our stay here. Ian, the owner and manager, was very involved and accomodating. We couldn't use our Uber anymore due to creditcard problems but we could call him while he was asleep he assured and he got cabs for us. The hostel is quite proximate to Melville, which is a nice area to eat and drink, and the...

Hi Carlo, I really enjoyed your stay at my hostel. I try to make everyone's stay here enjoyable and memorable of Joburg. My intention is that everyone walks into the hostel to friendliness and homeliness. Of course drugs don't fit into that at all. Wishing you well! Ian
