Ghandi's is a great place for backpackers coming to Johannesburg. It is affordable and offers free airport pickup and breakfast (cereals and toast). The driver even offers to take you to other places in the city, which is not too cheap but apparently cheaper than taxis. The hop on hop off bus is nearby as well. In fact, the location...

We stayed here twice. Private rooms are great. The kitchen is also big lovely and clean and we enjoyed the free cereal before heading off on tours we had organised. Heinz also called the pizza place for us and we had it delivered which was perfect as we were tired from safari! Also Thanks Chris for the airport pick up...

This was my second stay at Ghandi. The rooms are good-sized and as clean as ever (run by a Swiss gentleman so to be expected) and I had a warm welcome. Big and very clean kitchen for preparing food, storing stuff in the fridge, or eating breakfast. Warm staff. Heinz was very accomodating when I came back late and had...

This is a great place for those travelling on a budget in Johannesburg. The backpackers is located in a relatively safe neighbourhood and is walking distance from restaurants, a supermarket and an ATM. It is safe to walk around during the day. The house itself is really lovely and very modern with a comfortable lounge area, excellent kitchen and a...

A disappointing experience. I booked seven nights, but checked out affter three nights. The best thing about GBL is the complimentary Tambo Airport transfers. The included breakfast was just corn flakes, milk and instant coffee, all of which you had to find yourself. My room 13 was large with high ceilings, but the towels were ragged, the pillows lumpy, the...

It's my first time visiting Joburg. Just 5-10 mins driving west will bring you from the Lodge to the city centre. They provide free airport pick-up and free wifi. I was staying in the dorm. It was clean and safe. The neighborhood area is quite. As a historical building, the Lodge is well-maintained. I would recommend this for friends who...

I was picked up from the airport free of charge. My hosts were very welcoming and helped me to arrange tours and transport. They were interested in my safety and always offered the best advice. The hostel is set in an historical house and has modern, spacious facilities for cooking and plenty of areas to relax and unwind. The bar...

I stayed in the dorms for two nights, the mattresses are not that comfy. Plus, it is a 16-bed dorm with only two toilets and showers. Other than me and another traveller, there was no one in the dorm. The entire hostel was pretty quiet. The WiFi only worked in the bar, which was quite disappointing. Other than that and...

I've really enjoyed my stay at Ghandi Backpackers. There are no frills here, but it does offer a homey atmosphere. The main building is a mansion in Kensington where Ghandi lived for several years in Johannesburg. The dorm is the former servants quarters, a bit drafty in the winter, but you can always grab another blanket from the main house....

Advantages: great kitchen, nice room, very clean. Disadvantages: poor location in unsafe area so need to get taxi/public transport everywhere; very cold in all communal areas (for some reason the doors are open all day significantly reducing the heat); unfriendly staff and no atmosphere.
