Friendly staff, clean room and comfortable beds! We only stayed for one night but it was excellent (we stayed in a twin cabin). I dont know how the location or anything else is though because it was only a stop over for sleep.

Our stay in Jikeleza and Port Elizabeth were one of the stranger parts of our trip across SA. We were given a happy welcoming to the hostel as we arrived off the Baz Bus and were shown our rooms and were pleased with them. We were recommended to do the Addo - Schotia safari double pack by the hostel as...

Being one of the most affordable places to stay in PE, the hostel gives everything you need when traveling on a budget. The kitchen is big, the garden has a braai and a beautiful view over the valley. The people who reside there are very friendly. Special thumbs up for staff member Jason for doing remarkable job at making me...

Where to start... The senior manager is very pushy - if you have a plan yourself, they will try and make you change to a alternative of one of their partners since they have their own traveldesk, even if you repeatedly indicate not to want/need their help or involvement. The junior manager seems to not want to work at all...

Dear Emma and Lara, my staff were shocked at your comments after all they did for you. I am sorry we came across as pushy. We run a travel desk to give visitors the best experience we can at the best prices. We have negotiated with suppliers and have organized discounted tours, car hire etc. This was evidenced when we...

This hostel in the city center is quiet and their double beds were comfy. Apparently, their neighborhood is considered dangerous, so you should rather take a car at night and only carry minimal valuable stuff with you during the day, but we never felt threatened at any moment. But because it is a dangerous place, we were asked to clear...

It is a pleasure to see a well written review by a fellow traveller. iIam am sorry my manager gave you the impression that the area is dangerous, as it is no more dangerous than anywhere else in the world, but we would rather be safe than sorry. It just takes one incident to spoil your travels. Sorry about the...

We stayed here one night. We requested a room with two beds, and we got a room with one double, which we turned out to be grateful for because the room was very cold. They provided a space heater, which was only minimally helpful. To get to the bathroom, we had to walk outside. The room was right next to...

Hi Lizzie, I am so sorry you had a bad experience at our Backpackers. I have investigated your complaints and have dealt with all the relative people regarding the load noise and partying. Our policy is that after 23h30 there should be quiet. I will look into your booking to see why you were given a double room instead of...

What a stunning spot, central to the entire Port Elizabeth. The staff are so much fun they even threw a party for us. Made so many international travelers :) They even have a bar and full communion kitchen!!! Friendliest staff, I will use Jikeleza every time I'm looking for a break from stress. #bestbackpackerspe #happinessfoundationSA

Not a great backpackers. Staff are a little creepy, seem to be underage and are extremely unhelpful. Rooms are freezing and the sheets didn't feel clean. Bathrooms are gross. Area is a little dodgy. Didn't feel safe.

Hi Sam, I am sorry you did not have a good experience with us. However, I am confused. On the night you stayed with us, 18 July 2015 one of our senior managers (28 years old) was on duty and he said he got on very well with you. With him were two tourism interns (19 and 22 years old),...

I stayed for only one night in Jikeleza, so I can only juge the accommodation, which is great! Dorms and bathroom are very clean and airy. It looks like a small, comfy, familial backpackers in the center of the city. And staff seems to be cool too.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Come and explore the revamped young heart of Port Elizabeth. Jikeleza is just a few streets away from the buzzing nightlife that will swallow you in and take you on a true local ride. The clubs in the area range from hip hop to African house to classic mainstream radio funk. Parliament & Stanley Streets have become the local hang outs, so who really needs a club anyway! Let's party in the street! Have a lazy cocktail at one of the cafes while you lounge in their on street couches or chow down on huge chip rolls. Visit live music and theatre shows, banks, post office, pubs and 24 hour shops. Whatever you fancy, it is only a brisk walk away and our door is open all day and all night, so come home when you want to. Or relax with the other guests around the evening fire and enjoy a local Braai. There is always something to do. ... more   less
