Uday Samudra Leisure Beach Hotel & Spa's prime beachfront location garners applause from guests, as does its range of amenities, including multiple pools, an Ayurvedic spa, and private beach access. While the atmosphere, highlighted by live music and lush surroundings, is frequently celebrated, some travelers feel the hotel doesn’t offer value for money, pointing to expensive food and dated rooms. Service quality is often commended, yet it's marred by occasional reports of slow responses. Room opinions are divided, with some appreciating the space and views, and others noting the need for updates and better maintenance.

We visited Kovalam as a family of four to attend a wedding at a nearby KTDC unit and decided to extend our stay for an extra day to relax, enjoy some family time, and indulge in the beautiful sea views and Kerala cuisine. Overall, I would rate this experience 5/5, but due to a few minor issues, I’m giving it 4.5 (but not possible so 4).

What We Loved:

Prime Location: The hotel is right by the beach, perfect for those looking to enjoy the sea. Thoughtful touches like brushes and water to clean off sand when returning indoors made our stay more comfortable.

Dining Experience: The all-day restaurant, with a view of the sea and the refreshing breeze, was a highlight. We enjoyed tea, fresh lime, and onion pakoras—delicious snacks by the ocean.

Smooth Check-in: Check-in was efficient, and despite our late arrival, the rooms were ready. We enjoyed a traditional Kerala meal at the Courtyard, and the staff was attentive and helpful.

Room Comfort and Cleanliness: We booked two standard rooms with balconies facing the sea. Both rooms were neat, clean, and comfortable, with cane chairs on the balcony for relaxing. The bathrooms were well-maintained, and housekeeping was friendly and efficient.

Breakfast: The breakfast at Grasshopper was fantastic, with live tea preparation and a large buffet featuring at least four traditional Kerala dishes. The staff was cheerful, attentive, and non-intrusive, making for a pleasant dining experience.

Minor Issues:

Bathroom Odor: One of our rooms had an unpleasant odor in the bathroom. However, the staff quickly moved us to a different room, which we appreciated.

Renovation Noise: There was some disruptive noise from ongoing repairs in one of the rooms, which was bothersome as we intended to relax indoors. After raising the issue, we were moved to a third room, which was quiet and comfortable. The housekeeping staff was prompt and helpful in assisting with the move.

Weather Disappointment: Although our room had a sunset view, the weather didn’t cooperate, and clouds blocked the full sunset.

Conclusion: Despite a few minor setbacks, the hotel’s excellent location, attentive staff, and overall comfort made for a wonderful stay. I would definitely visit again and look forward to experiencing more of Kovalam’s beauty!

Stayed three nights in Uday Samudra Leisure Beach Hotel & Spa(UDS), Kovalam with family. Mine was a premium sea view room with big balcony, facing to the sea. This room was spacious to accommodate my entire family with all the facilities.

UDS Kovalam is located next to the beach and around 2kms from the main Kovalam beach. The beach next to UDS is not a private one, but is less crowded and accessible from the back gate. They have made good arrangements and deployed a dedicated security person at the gate. They have arranged sun loungers and chairs for their guests near to the beach and have steps through which guests can get into to the beach. They also have premium sea facing rooms where the guests can enjoy the sea view from their balconies.

It has all the facilities one can expect from a five star property. 3 swimming pools, Gym, Ayurveda, Spa etc…The property and the amenities are well maintained. Over all, the facility was good and peaceful. One can just walk around in the morning and enjoy. They also provide wheel chairs for those who need and the entire property is accessible through wheel chair.

I had complimentary breakfast and my family enjoyed it. Later I came to know, they have complementary dinner and other options as well, but one has to choose those options and can avail by paying extra. We are strict vegetarians ( no onion and garlic) and we had lot of options for breakfast. I believe they have similar options in the dinner as well and they also arrange musical concerts for their guests during dinner. It was really good.

Travel desk is good and friendly, but needs to improve. They have their own vehicles and also have tied up with external vendors. Once I travelled with a chauffeur from their external vendor and I did not have a good experience. I understand it’s a five star property, but I expected them to provide guidance on the tourist places and help their guests to plan their visits. I did not find them flexible and bit expensive. I’m not sure, this may be a standard in all the five stars, but somehow not justified. Looks like indirectly they want their guests to manage local visits through outside travel agencies/cabs. Yes, on my request they arranged a good chauffeur (Mr. Sujith) for me. He was very friendly and guided me in my local tours. Over all it was OK, but not great.

Overall, my stay in UDS Kovalam was good, peaceful and enjoyable. Thanks to Mr Sibu, Mr Shashi, Mr Narayanan and Mr Sujith for all their help & co-operation. If I get a chance in future, I will definitely choose this place for my stay

The standard of the house keeping was absolutely superb, nothing was too much trouble, could not possibly improve, totally 5 star! The lads arrived at 11am daily with crisp new towels, huge bed made up with white linen, the en-suite was scrubbed daily and left with a lovely smell finishing the room by mopping every inch! The house keeping staff made my holiday great!

We had a three week stay at the Uday Samudra beach hotel, during which we had to complain daily about the building works and associated noise and disruption experienced during our stay. Jack hammers, hammering and banging across various locations around the hotel were a constant everyday. In addition each day brought with it a constant stream of workmen wheeling barrows of building materials through the pool area which was hugely intrusive. Outside our ‘see view’ room was piles of building materials and workmen constantly grinding and cutting these materials (bricks, blocks, tiles, support metal work)etc. We complained numerous times to hotel management, the in-country partner of the travel agent and the travel agent in the UK, forwarding over 40 mails and over 100 videos and photos. We also had an issue with security associated with an external door having an inadequate and easily breached lock. On the plus side the staff were all lovely and could not do enough for us, and the food was excellent. The Hotel management however were in denial saying the noise was from adjacent hotels which was clearly not the case as demonstrated by numerous videos we collected. The in country agent was near to useless. The UK travel agent (Mercury Travel) was less than responsive having been sent 40 mails and videos, concluding that the hotel was carrying out essential beautification works, painting and tiling etc. after 6 weeks of investigation with their in-country partner. Which was not the case evidenced by the videos sent to them on an almost daily basis. This holiday should never have been sold given the ongoing extensive works that took place during our stay. I feel let down by the hotel and by Mercury Holidays in their responsiveness and ownership of the issue.

Dear Mr. Keith, Thank you for sharing your feedback. First of all, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you experienced during your stay. Regarding your review, we are aware of the multiple complaints and allegations you have raised through Mercury Travels, and we have already provided responses to those. I would like to point out that most of the photos you uploaded are of areas outside the premises of our hotel. Yes, there were some beautification works taking place during your stay, which included painting, changing furniture, and curtains. When you expressed dissatisfaction with the view from your originally booked room, we upgraded you to a higher category room. Additionally, as per your request, we provided 3 days' accommodation at our premium property in Alleppey at the same rate as a gesture of good will. In regard to your complaint about one of our staff members, we understand that there was an incident where a staff member assisted you when you were unable to open the door. Despite his help, you raised a complaint afterward. It has also come to our attention that, during your stay, you encouraged other guests to seek compensation by mentioning the ongoing work at the hotel. Some of these guests informed us directly about this. However, we would like to highlight that we received no other complaints from guests staying during that time; in fact, many provided positive comments about their experience. Once again, we appreciate your feedback, and we hope to provide a better experience for you in the future. Thanks and Regards, Renjini Menon, Guest Relation Manager

I wouldn't recommend this resort to anyone, especially women travellers. We experienced two major security incidents during our 2-night stay at this resort. On the first day, when we arrived at the property, the hotel security removed our strollers from the cab and kept them near the entrance while I was asked to go check in. While I was talking to the front desk about the remaining payment for the rooms, we noticed that our strollers were being placed inside an auto rickshaw. When we rushed to the entrance and asked the staff what they were doing, they all seemed completely clueless, claiming that another guest had identified our strollers as his own and that's why they had loaded it into the autorickshaw. Instead of apologising, they kept making excuses about how this could have happened. Since we had already paid for the rooms by then and my parents were really tired, we decided to check in to the rooms. We had taken ocean-view rooms with balconies. On both days, when we left the rooms to go out, we locked the balcony doors. But upon our return in the night, for some odd reason, the balcony doors were found to be unlocked. Since the balconies on that side are interconnected, it would be very easy for someone to enter from another room and access our room from the balcony. Since housekeeping was done in the morning, the hotel's excuse that their housekeeping would have entered in the evening hours (between 4 to 7pm) is totally false. This got us so anxious that we couldn't sleep properly on both nights.
Also, these rooms have a separate door leading to a fire exit staircase that can be accessed by anyone. There is no way to bolt the door except with the door lock which can be opened by anyone with a key from the outside. When I spoke to the hotel staff about my concerns, they condescendingly told me that they have never had security issues at their property. I asked them if then it was common for them to lose their guests' luggage!
Apart from these severe security issues that we found and which round her family holiday, we also found the rooms severely smelling of mould and the bathroom showers not working properly. This place doesn't even deserve a 3-star status. The only saving grace in the property was the restaurant staff, their service and the quality of food they served. Each meal we ordered was good.

The most disappointing hotel out of the seven I stayed in in Kerala. I had just stayed at the Uday Suites hotel which was much better all round.
The restaurant staff were over-attentive, taking my plates etc away the moment I had nothing left to eat. At one lunchtime (1.30) I was the only guest and I counted 12 waiting staff. It all felt very intimidating.
Few staff seemed to be able to speak English and my comments usually took three people before anyone understood me.
My stay was marred by very noisy building work coming from two places. When I complained I was told it was not work but 'beautification' - however I could hear it in my room and in the public parts of the hotel.
I stayed around the hotel as it rained all day. Due to a midnight pick-up to go to the airport I was given a (pre-booked) packed breakfast, which was a white bread sandwich with tomato and cucumber, tree tiny bananas and a small carton of juice. Not really what you would expect from a 5* hotel.
I did not think it was safe to allow people to go in the pool when it was dark, unlike other hotels.
Finally - although it is described as a beach hotel, to get to the beach you have to cross a patch of scrubby land with a great quantity of rubbish and there is no access to the beach. Sad end to a great holiday in Kerala

Dear Jane, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are truly sorry to hear that your experience with us did not meet your expectations, especially considering your enjoyable stay at our sister property, Uday Suites. Please allow us to address the points you have raised. We sincerely apologize if the attentiveness of our restaurant staff made you feel uncomfortable. We strive to provide prompt and efficient service, but we understand that this may have come across as overbearing. Your feedback has been shared with our team, and we will work on balancing attentiveness with the comfort and space our guests deserve. Regarding communication, we regret that you experienced difficulties in conveying your requests. We will take steps to improve our team’s English proficiency and overall communication skills to ensure a smoother guest experience in the future. We apologize for the noise you encountered due to ongoing improvements. Our goal is to enhance the overall guest experience through these beautification efforts, but we regret that it impacted the peace and comfort of your stay. We will work on better managing noise levels in the future and appreciate your understanding. We are sorry to hear that the packed breakfast did not meet your expectations. We will review our packed breakfast offerings to ensure they reflect the standards our guests expect from a 5-star property. In regard to the pool use after dark, safety is our priority, and we follow strict guidelines to ensure guest well-being. However, we understand your concerns and will revisit these policies. Lastly, we are aware of the issue regarding the beach access and the surrounding area, and we are working with local authorities to address the situation and improve the cleanliness and accessibility. Thank you once again for your feedback. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future and provide you with the high-standard experience we aim for. This is definitely not a 5* hotel. We changed bedrooms three times and gave up in the end hoping to be given a ‘good one’. 2* would be generous. The bedrooms are in dire need of updates. The fridge wasnt cold. The bathroom was a disgrace. No plug in the hand basin. Chrome missing from the plug hole. The sealant behind handbasin was black. Bedside lamps were black inside. Electrics in the rooms led a lot to be desired, one sparked when a plug was put in. Toiletries provided were hit and miss, some rooms were given plenty we weren’t. Upon arrival there was one towel in the bathroom, there were two of us. The list of scruffiness goes on
Many other visitors were equally disappointed with the misleading star rating. All of us expected much better standards
The Temple celebration lasting 6 long days starting around 5am, finishing after 11pm didn’t help. Huge speakers around the stage, speakers all around the village. The noise was comparable to a heavy rock festival. Double glazing may have helped
The staff were always helpful. The grounds were attractive. Breakfast was satisfactory
The whole description of this hotel together with the area is extremely misleading

My wife and I were extremely pleased with our stay. (4 nights)
We had a room with a large balcony and sea views on the second floor, which was very appealing and big. The team of Mr Sandeep Kumar and savana supervisor was very accommodating and friendly. The room was very neat and clean every day.
We used the laundry service. The laundry was ready and neatly folded after a day.
We were every day at Ayurveda, ( 30 minutes) and were always very satisfied. The team was always very friendly and the massage was soothing. Among others, Mr. Suresh Raj, who did very well. Unfortunately, I don't know the other names.
I would particularly like to highlight the restaurant. The food was Indian and very good and varied. We had the breakfast and dinner buffet included in our Booking Referral. The service was extremely friendly and very accommodating. We will miss the people there.
We were swimming in the pools and enjoyed it. Everything was fine. With three pools you always have one nearby and our next one was a staircase from our room.
Beach actually has little. Even at low tide, little sand is visible. And the stretch between the surf wall and the hotel is sandy, but not a beach in my view. But there is always a stiff breeze and it has high waves. The wind makes the heat more bearable.
The hotel also organises excursions. We had booked one that went into the mangrove forest. A boat trip about 90 minutes. Was very interesting (Poovar Backwater).
We have been to many Indian hotels, even without stars. This is one of the best we have experienced. And we say that from our own experience. By the way, we are not sponsored, but write it as we experienced it and because we love India.

The hotel property is very big and right on the Kovalam beach ! Guests can step out on to the beach and hence very conveniently located. Many of the rooms can have Ocean view from their rooms because the property has three blocks and very well designed so that balconies of rooms can have very clear sunset view too.

While the staff are very helpful and caring and try their best to extend the best servicing but on a busy day when the hotel is full like on The Christmas Day my room could not be cleaned upto 4 pm when I had to escalate !!
