Had three nights here at the end of our Southern India tour. It may be 5* by Indian standards, but it's not 5* by European ones. Nonetheless, a nice hotel if a little 'tired'.
Yet is not really a 'beach resort'. The beach is reached by crossing an area strewn with rubble and litter, climbing on to a crumbling embankment to see a beach, which at high tide, is virtually non-existent. There was me thinking I would spend the last few days on a lounger, under a parasol looking at the Arabian Sea. Nope.
But there are three large pools. The architecture is wonderful. The grounds kept immaculately clean and well tended.
The rooms are a good size, light and airy but our bathroom, especially, was tired. We were in room 821 and the room boys worked hard to keep it immaculate, but it's not their job to replace a broken loo seat, whiten the black grout behind the basin
or provide a non-slip mat in the shower, which is lethal. Also it's a long time since I had a shower curtain in a hotel!
Good variety in the buffet restaurant. Egg chef at breakfast. Staff very obliging.
I had a massage. Great massage but not given in 5* surroundings.
To get to a lovely little bay and if you don't mind a short walk, leave the entrance of the hotel and turn right. Keep the buildings on your right and pass a large tree on the left. When you hit the sea, turn left and go up some steps in a small headland, walk along the top and you drop down into a beautiful small bay with a lovely unspoilt beach. If you go up a short track to the Lobster Restaurant, you can sit there with a cooling breeze and super view, enjoying drinks at half the hotel's prices!

A beautiful , well located hotel that makes one feel that they are on holiday. The staff all round are excellent , always attentive to the guests needs and requests.
The rooms are ideally located with most having an excellent view of the ocean and beautiful sunsets.
If one is energetic, a walk along the beach to the lighthouse and back will be worthy from watching the launching of fishing boats in the evenings (manually) to hauling in the fish in the morning. Team work at its best.Along the walk there are numerous shops catering for all needs. You can also take dip in the ocean in the designated bathing beaches.
The hotel provided a Xmas banquet, wow, what a spread and entertainment.
Dining in all the restaurants was excellent besides the poolside restaurant. Their service is extremely slow and the room service even worse. The 45 minutes to receive our order which came incomplete and a further 30 minutes to rectify.
This is the only location in India where the Auto-rickshaw wasn't a rip off, it was the easiest lot that i could negotiate a price with, and 2 of them actually threw in extra sites to visit at no extra cost... and best of all no trips to the shops .

Approach road puts you off. Inside you have old world ambience mixed with modernity. Rooms are moderate in size, and need a face lift badly. One needs half a day to understand the vast area.

Abundant swimming pools, restaurants, good food, smiling courteous staff, good guidance are the forte here. Adjacent beach is rough, do not venture to enter the waters here.

Ayurvedic spa is good. Try Kerala cuisine. The chef or Managers guide you well.

Travel desk is excellent. Local sightseeing, and semi long distance vehicles can be hired.Drivers are well informed and the vehicles are in good shape.

For the budget traveller, the local autorickshaw drivers can double up both as guides as navigators.

So we arrived in January and at first all was well .they mixed our rooms up but that wasn't a problem as they moved us the next morning .

The good bits are the hotel is nice and clean staff seem really friendly and the rooms are kept spotlessly clean. Cleaned everyday and fresh towels supplied
The restaurant we only had breakfast which was ok a bit basic to be honest for British people
Waffles eggs omlettes. Porridge and serials
Staff were helpful so we were happy .
Lots of little restaurant s outside and really nice food too that's not expensive at all same with the taxis and tut tuts

The Bad for us anyway
This hotel does not consider it's package holiday guests .It earns it's money on holding huge conferences which take over the whole hotel and the main pool the noise is disgraceful building all through the night a temporary conference centre
We had to use the much smaller pools at the rear of the hotel we complained and was told that the manager would See us the day we go home .some good that would do anyway the day before we left we were approached and offered a free meal for our inconvenience which we declined
Honestly I wouldn't use this hotel for the above reasons it really is mainly for large conferences
That's are honest review

Our family of three stayed in this hotel for 2 nights over NYE Celebrations. Given the ratings and high price tag ( paid more then in Leela Palace in Chennai with breakfast), our expectations were high. But from a moment we have arrived, we were disappointed ( slow check in , a welcome drinks were not offered), we have been shown our Atrium room (looking tired, needed some uplifting), bathroom has no glass door, but only moulded, yellow stained curtain ( big no no for the money hotel is charging)! Courtyard was fenced off for NY celebration and pool was cover with wood planks to accommodate tables. Understand why they needed to do it, but for 3 or more days pool was closed and noisy and dusty work was carried. Given this was a main pool, we were very disappointed. The other two pools were opened, but they were small , heavily chlorinated and not pretty ( surrounded by slippery paving ). Too much paving , more nature ( grass, trees will be welcome)!
Sea frontage of hotel is horrendous, it’s public beach, with lots of rubbish, horrible smell and broken pavement ( again pavement! ), with few uninviting non hotel restaurants. You need to walk 15 mins to get to some sort of swimming beach area but there is no sitting arrangements by this hotel. Food overall very average and totally overpriced! Staff slow but nice, need some training. Mandatory CNY provided good entertainment, ok food but not even glass of wined was included in hefty price of Rp5000 per person. In comparison, other hotels India provide a glass of Prosecco or bottle of Sulla per couple. Definitely, we are not planning trip back.

I booked 7 nights at the Uday Samuday Resort and Spa in Kovolam, India, from 18 to 25 February. This hotel is listed on booking.com as a 5* property and I trusted your listing that it would be exactly that.

I was shocked on arrival at this hotel to discover that this property barely merits 3*s. The quality of the room and the hotel is best described as ‘worn out’ and the conditions of the room we were allotted was best described as ‘dirty’. The hotel caters to cheap group tours and does not have facilities of a 5* hotel. The staff try their best to accommodate but a system is not in place and they are poorly trained. The breakfast is not up the standard of neither a 5* nor a 3* property, in fact the buffet could be described as ‘health hazard’ due to lack of supervision of the food counters. The tables are not cleaned after a diner departs and another sits at the table.

This property is not up to standard and the sky high room rate versus the product delivered is not acceptable. It is obvious that Booking.com has not checked this property as it's listing details bear no relationship to the actual property.
I am annoyed and disappointed and have lost confidence. This hotel requires total refurbishment and total change in management strategy before it can market itself as a 5 star hotel.

This was the most disappointing part of our 8 day Kerala trip. Based on trip advisor reviews, I chose this hotel to spend 30th and 31st December hoping for a fantastic experience. Quite to the contrary, they gave us a dingy claustrophobic room that was dull, dirty and had outdated furniture with a leaking stinky bathroom. We booked from USA and when we reserve a room with $250, there is a certain level of expectations we have in mind that this hotel management is completely unaware of. We have traveled widely around the world and never felt so cheated quality and price wise in any part of this world - whether it was domestic inside USA or Canada, Europe, China or Japan. The next day, they moved us to a different room which was slightly better but not good enough. I would never ever book this hotel or this chain again. Very very frustrating experience that ruined my end of the year fun.

We stayed at UDS during our Kovalam visit and it was fantastic. The property is big with all five star facilities. Excellent view with private like Samudra beach just in front of the resort. Rooms are of decent size, clean and with balcony facing the sea. Toilets are clean with all modern facilities. They have 3 swimming pools, two restaurants and a 24 hrs cafe. Away from all the noise and crowd of Kovalam public beach. There are many gift shops and beach shack like sea food restaurants just outside of the property which are little less expensive then the resort food. Overall this is a premium property in Kovalam.

I can only guess that this hotel is rated five star due to its size and range of activities and services. It seemed quite soulless, with staff in the Grasshopper and Courtyard restaurants looking quite miserable, no smiling, no greeting. If you wanted a cup of tea they just pointed rather than offer to help. These two places are buffet restaurants, there are others which we did not try. Another problem was food variety: they only seem to cater for an Indian rather than an international clientele, with food labelled incomprehensively. Some dishes were only lukewarm, particularly at breakfast. The room was on the ground floor with a terrace and no privacy, and there was no hot water during our three day stay. The hotel is right on the beach, one highlight is to watch the fishermen hauling in their nets and singing as they do so. There are also a few shops and a well respected cafe/restaurant along the beach to the left.

My family and I had a wonderful experience visiting Uday Samudra for a 2 day trip to Kovalam. The resort accomplishes a leisurely feel, with its expansive open air grounds and proximity to the beach.

We stayed in a beautiful ocean view room with uninterrupted views of the sea (the third category of room). They have various categories of rooms with some being smaller and pool-facing with others being larger and having partial / full sea view. Our room was very modern, renovated, and spacious. We got an extra roll in bed and found it to be perfectly sized for three poeple. There was a separated shower and very spacious restrooms, with all expected amenities. They don’t provide multiple hand towels or smaller towels so we had to ask for more.

Some of their rooms are less renovated so you should clarify with them during check in if that’s important for you.

Their eating areas are covered indoor-outdoor spaces which allows you to enjoy the sea but the lighting was oddly dim. The breakfast spread was delicious with multiple varieties and options.

The resort has multiple amenities including salon, Ayurvedic spa, beachside coffee shop and more. The staff was extremely hospitable, pleasant and helpful throughout which really made for a wonderful experience. The massage rooms very clean and relaxing. We were especially pleased by Ms. Athira and Ms from the guest services and dining team, who were very attentive, friendly and helpful in ensuring we had a comfortable stay.

Overall we really enjoyed Uday Samudra and will look forward to coming back. It is a haven for Kerala hospitality with pleasant staff and beautiful outdoor vibes. Would recommend further if the team is also able to upgrade, polish and renovate more rooms.
