Had an opportunity to spend a day at Niraamaya along with the company of few student architects. After a warm welcome, the HR Manager and GRE, graciously explained the history of the retreat and accompanied us to a guided tour. The presence of lots of coconut, banyan and bamboo trees gives a perfect green cover to the vast resort area and camouflage the individual cottages of guests giving them absolute privacy. Most of the cottages are built using old but time tested wooden building materials retrieved from actual traditional houses depicting the Kerala architecture of last century. The sea view from the property and ease of access to the beach are worth mentioning. Ayurvedic treatments and massages are offered to guests by well qualified professionals. Other facilities like the swimming pool, restaurant and bar, open air stage, Yoga platform facing the sea, library, secluded benches and sitting arrangements add more advantages to this heritage hotel.

Amazing hotel with fabulous staff and absolutely fabulous restaurant! All the food delicious. Every meal was a Treat! But sadly the construction of a sea container port in the same bay and where both the restaurant and the bar overlooks is all consuming. A dredger all day long spewing out black smoke. The construction of the sea port is night and day. Sadly, like the previous review I can’t recommend this place purely due to the sea port construction nearby. They may say it’s 5km away but it’s in the bay and it’s noisy. I wouldn’t stay here again only because of the sea container port!

The Ayurvedic treatments were great as was my therapist Sindhu but I was concerned about her wellbeing as she seemed sad and didn't get many days off if any! Yoga teacher Unni was a kind soul and a great teacher, would love more yoga/meditation linked with the 5 elements as 1 class was not enough when on a Ayurvedic Yoga retreat and be good to learn more . The big down for me was the construction noise and pollution (black smoke from the dredger) from the port construction which spoiled the trip for me as I was sold a pristine and tranquil venue . The other big negative was the very poor cleanliness standards in the spa especially the showers which were covered in black mould and spores on the ceiling, this is totally unacceptable for a "wellbeing" retreat as is poor for health in so many ways. The quality of the spa towels were also very poor and not 5 star The head chef cookery class was a highlight for me cooking at sunset then eating dinner was lovely, thanks to the chef for his time.

I haven’t stayed but planning to visit in first week of March. A lot of reviews mention about CONSTRUCTION noise and not a peaceful atmosphere. Can someone from the hotel management please confirm this? I don’t want to spend $1000 and be stuck on a construction site for 4 days.

Response from Marketing Team, Owner at Niraamaya Retreats Surya Samudra
Responded 1 week ago
Dear Helen, Thank you for reaching out regarding your concerns about potential construction noise during your stay at our resort in the first week of March. We understand your apprehension and would like to clarify that the construction mentioned in some reviews is not happening within the resort premises or nearby. Instead, it is a breakwater construction for a port located approximately 5km away from the resort. Due to the resort's proximity to the beach, the construction may be visible, and there have been instances of noise disturbance reported. Upon receiving noise complaints, we promptly alerted the authorities to monitor and regulate the noise levels, particularly during the night. While the port authorities have assured us of keeping the noise under control, we acknowledge that the serene environment of our resort might make any noise more perceptible. Feedback from our guests regarding the construction noise has been varied. Some individuals have found it disturbing, while the majority have not been significantly affected and have enjoyed a memorable stay, taking advantage of our resort's facilities such as wellness and Ayurveda services. It's important to note that our resort consistently operates at maximum occupancy every night, indicating the overall satisfaction of our guests despite the construction activities in the vicinity. We assure you that we prioritize the comfort and satisfaction of our guests, and we will do our utmost to ensure that your stay with us is as pleasant and peaceful as possible. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us directly. We look forward to welcoming you to our resort and providing you with an unforgettable experience. Regards, Prakash Nayak

This is my third time to Niraamaya, Kovalam. I am accompanied by my husband for two days and the rest 6 days I was on my own. This was my husbands first trip to the place and he fell in love with the place, massages, food and specially the people. They helped us with travel arrangements to Padmanabha swamy temple, Azhimala temple and back waters. The place is good to rejuvenate, reflect, relax and get back to the busy world. The sunrises, sunsets, beach walks and strolls are very relaxing and therapeutic. The chefs are amazing here. Every meal is curated so well and is top notch. Thanks to chef Prakash, Sujith, Senthil and team. Everyone is great in their respective jobs. I always feel like a queen coming here and that’s how each and everyone treats me at this place. This is my go to place to relax.

One of my highlights was the early morning yoga session led by Unni. I had tried yoga a couple of times before and given up, but I was up and ready to start the session at 7am 15 days on the trot which is amazing considering I could have had a lay-in in the morning. He was so caring and gentle with the beginners i was motivated to keep going back. The food is wonderful as it so tasty and the chefs are brilliant. We went with one of them to the local harbour where we bought fresh fish straight off a fishing boat and then we took it back to the hotel to cook it. A real bad negative for the hotel is that there is a lot of noise day and night due to the construction of a new port. They are constantly dropping rubble and moving cranes. For this reason I cannot recommend this hotel. It is such a shame because it’s not the hotels fault but if you want peace and relaxation this hotel needs to be avoided. The port is not fully open yet but when it is it will be like staying at Felixstowe docks. There were other irritations like there being no available sun-beds on a couple of occasions and there are no sun-beds on the beach. There is also a shortage of tables (i.e. only one) by the sun beds to put your drink on. There is no service around the pool and if people did take a drink down there, the glasses were not cleared away very often.

Beautiful location with pristine blue private beaches and traditional Kerala style ambience with well designed path ways joining the accommodation with pool and restaurant. Food was tasty. It has a spectacular view from Yoga mandapam along the beach side. Had a warming yoga session by Unni Krishnan.

A well kept secret in the picturesque Kovalam, Kerala. The beach is serene with the most beautiful sunset. Each Room is unique and never experienced something like them before. Food here is amazing! Under the supervision of the Culinary Director Prakash the food is well curated and also has a wellness menu. The staff deserves a special mention, Suva, Sujata, Leo, hoskeeping manager Sujit, the chef, the security Joseph, everyone was warm and make the place welcome. The place is almost a national treasure. On the beach is the yoga zen area where the yoga instructor Unnikrishnan gives his classes in the morning which is a must even for the non yogis!
