I have just come back from my stay at Amruthrum ayurvedic resort in keral. Well my holiday here has well exceeded my expectations. I am a busy person and needed to relax. The beautiful surrounding, lovely food and amazing welcome from all the staff was outstanding. I learnt alot about the Indian people, amazing Yoga/ Spiritual tuition from Adjit and Meditation in fact myself and friend Eilleen are alrdeady planning our next trip there. So I am a very happy relaxed Spiritual enlightened person from the whole experience. We were taken out at a small cost on the last night to some amazing local temples. Bigh thank you to all at Amruthrum X

When I booked, Amrutham proudly claimed #1 on TripAdvisor in Trivandrum. Well it's true they're #1, but the location is actually a small, very rural village well away from Trivandrum itself. I asked for an airport transfer and it's as well I did as I'm not sure how the airport taxis would have located it, although the cost of the transfer - like all of Amrutham's offerings - was a little overpriced. The resort is compactly located in jungle (which actually feels a bit oppressive) and is closely surrounded by neighbouring properties. I was expecting sounds from the local wildlife (which actually at times was a real cacophony), but in addition the local temple pipes in music starting at 5:30am every day. During temple festivals this continues until 9pm in the evening, including readings of inspirational texts (apparently) over the PA.

The hotel itself, the staff and the food were all lovely and the rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable. For me, the best things were the yoga classes (I'm a yoga teacher, so my standards are high!), the pool area and the company of the other guests. If you want to wind down, relax and do nothing, this place is ideal, but they also arranged local trips for a small cost. I visited a beautiful, famous, local meditation spot with sunset views over the ocean, visited a temple, and was invited to meet my meditation teacher's guru, Amma "the hugging saint", at a local Ashram.

The worst things were the massages (I've had cheaper, better Ayurvedic massages in India with nicer smelling oils!) and the mosquitoes.

A friend and I visited the Amrutham hotel on 2 October 14 for one week. The staff were very welcoming and we found the premises clean and authentic. we had the most amazing week, starting with Yoga in the mornings and a teacher with exceptional yoga and spiritual knowledge. In the day the we would visit the local places, the beach, boating on the backwater and had a guide with us to see the elephants. We were most fortunate to visit several local temples with staff members. In the evening we meditated in a temple dwelling with the sound of nature surrounding us, We were made to feel truly special and we are defiantly going to return asap to continue our learning.
The Indian people are very hospitable and welcoming to foreigners and we never felt out of place. They have a deep spiritual nature but also a sense of genuine friendship. we also h

I visited Amrutham for the 200-hour yoga teacher training course (one month) and I was very excited about it. The first two weeks were alright. We were only three girls in the class and our teacher Subhash seemed competent. The resort was truly beautiful and the staff seemed nice, but the atmosphere somehow felt wrong.
During our first weeks many people stayed at Amrutham for retreats and yoga classes and all turned very negative in just a few days. They complained about how Amrutham would overcharge for food and trips and many left several days before they were supposed to. Some had very loud discussions with the manager, Vandana, before they left. Both Vandana and the guests were literally screaming og shouting at each other and we could hear them from our rooms, the yoga shala, the pool and the restaurant. That was not really what I expected from a yoga resort.
Our teacher Subhash was not very professional. He posted pictures that he took of us during classes on his personal facebookpage and he kept texting us, sending ramdom youtube videos trying to start a conversation.
Our third week at Amrutham I realised that something was really wrong. The atmosphere between us girls had become very strange and it turned out that one of the others had been seeing our teacher. She had been meeting with him in our shala when we were not there and had gone to a hotel with him. He had texted her saying that he would leave his family for her and that she should come live with him in India. She became afraid of him and convinced me to sleep in her room one night because she was scared that he would come. Everything was ruined after that. There was not much friendship left between the three of us and none of us enjoyed the classes. We all wanted to learn, so we did our best, but it wasn't fun at all. I felt very alone.
In my opinion Subhash tought us a lot when we were just doing yoga the first two weeks, but he did not teach us much about actually teaching yoga. I asked him a lot about alternative poses, because by the end of the course we were all doing pretty complicated asanas and I wanted something more simple for teaching people with weak knees, hips, etc. This he would not give and he got pretty angry with me. His personality changed completely from what we had seen in the beginning and I actually didn't feel safe in his company and didn't want to be alone with him. One day one of the other girls was teaching (not the one he was seeing). She messed up left and right when she was teaching sun salutations and he yelled at her. Then she messed up again and he threw a mosquito spray at her from where he was standing six metres away in the shala. He couldn't control his temper. Once he knew that we all knew about the realtionship it was clear for me to see that he wanted to finish our course and start the next one. He even offered us time for our self-practise when we had finished our final exam, meaning that he would not even show up to classes the last three days of the course.
I became friends with a girl who was also doing the course at Amrutham, but with another teacher, and she told me that when we left and Subhash started his next course he started seeing a new girl.
I don't understand where all the positive reviews I read before signing up come from, because none of the guests I met at Amrutham had a good experience. Not all left screaming and yelling, but at least three did. I wish someone would have warned me. I didn't meet any kind and warm people at Amrutham. The waiters are single men who don't respect your personal space and will stay near the table way too long just listening and looking at you. I didn't feel at home in the beautiful resort because the atmosphere was all wrong and I got more and more paranoid during the last week. I didn't feel safe.
I wouldn't advise anyone to choose Amrutham for a yoga retreat og a YTT. There is another 200-hour course in the same town for half the price. I chose this expensive course because I wanted to make sure I got a professional education and because the reviews were all really great and I made a big mistake. Chose someplace else.

Dear Maja, We received your review. We must admit that we were deeply anguished. This is the first 1 star review that we have received in over 5 years. We have taken your feedback to heart. We are taking all possible affirmative action. Needless to say this is a long and intense course. This coupled with class dynamics can sometimes cause challenges. We have taken all measures to ensure that relationships remain professional and AMRUTHAM is safe at all times. We strive to create the best possible experience for each and every guest and aim at 100% satisfaction. We apologise if we have fallen short of your expectations. Warm Regards Vandana

Dear Guest, Thank you for your candid feedback The opinions of our guests are very important to us. The Yoga TTC being a long and demanding course can cause a few challenges especially if there are more than two in the group. Our only regret is that you did not discuss your concerns during your Yoga - TTC review meetings - we could have addressed it immediately and ensured a more satisfying and pleasant stay. We have taken your review seriously. We have probed into what you have mentioned and have taken all the necessary steps to ensure that our guests are not inconvenienced. We would also like to reiterate that majority of our guests are single women travellers and they have found Amrutham very secure. You would have observed that we believe in a responsible model offering the people from the village(mostly widows) a dignified way to earn a living. We are genuinely involved in spreading the goodness of Yoga, Meditation and Ayurveda. Assuring you of our best service Best Regards Vandana Varma

My husband were looking forward to this hotel after all the great reviews on Trip Advisor and the look of the website. We visited in December 2014 with the greatest hopes. The "hotel" is located outside of Kovalam and the front entrance is difficult to find. When we pulled up (to the rear entrance) there was garbage all around. The room they gave us had no AC. The accommodations are 2 star at most. The pool, dirty. The "ayurvedic" experience is a total scam. A "doctor" who was a 19 year old girl interviewed both my husband and I and suggested the same exact treatment. The "spa" facilities are basically a grass hut. Not very sanitary or inviting. They claimed to be under construction, but let's be real. If you are looking for the #1 spa destination in Kovalam...go to the Taj Vivanta. This is a far cry from #1 anything. Save yourself time and disappointment.

Dear Guest, We appreciate you taking the time to provide us with such candid feedback of your stay. We are very sorry to hear that your stay did not meet expectations. Your comments are greatly valued and we will ensure your feedback is given due importance. We are in the process of completely upgrading the property . Since the renovations were being done during your visit, there was a little bit of mess up in the backyard( it was only there for 2 days) which has all been cleared now. Our rooms are completely refurbished with new in-room accessories. Most of our guests who come for the yoga, meditation and Ayurveda experience prefer not to stay in AC rooms. However 50% of our rooms have AC now. All your other complaints are addressed and we assure you that everything will be in order on your next visit. We hope we can convince you to change your mind about another visit to our resort. Looking forward to welcoming you back . Warm Regards Vandana Varma Manager - Amrutham Ayurvedic Village Resort

I cannot recommend this healing treat centre highly enough. It is a tranquil oasis in a very busy world. The ayervudic massage and treatments are out of this world – they are completely based on the pure ayervurdic principles and each treatment is worked out with a doctor who then informs the highly skilled, gently intuitive practitioners. The retreat itself is full of flowers, birds, butterflies around a small swimming pool. I loved their fruit bowls full of pomegranates, mangoes, bananas, coconut, berries, brim full of vitality and health. The yoga was beautifully created for all abilities and each one of us was challenged in a way that was good for us. I loved the quiet reflection session at the end of the day in the early evening. A wonderful, wonderful experience.

Thank You Ajith, Sarah and everyone at Amrutham!! We organized our first guided tour to Kerala from Finland and accommodated our customers at Amrutham. We could have not found a better place. :) For customers who seek inner healing, authentic atmosphere, family oriented service and beautiful location Amrutham is the right place. Some of the strengths of Amrutham are its small size which enables the visitors to get in contact with each other, the location in a local village not too far from Kovalam beach where visitors can easily go for having a swim or souvenir shopping, and of course its wonderful and genuine staff!! Many western tourists prefer genuine actions and attitude from the staff rather than trained distant skills. Everything does not have to be perfect as long as the heart is in the right place. :) Hearing from our customers, if you are ready to open up and receive, you can really get new meanings to life from Ajith's yoga classes and a change of body and mind with Amruthams ayurvedic therapies.
