Your location

Booked in 2019 and before boarder closures, we are delighted to be one of the first visitors from NZ back to the Cook Islands!
As a couple, we are not interested in all inclusive, staying in a resort type of holidays; we prefer sourcing local individuals to show us and tell us about their community life as we get a more authentic experience.

So for us Matriki Beach Huts was simplicity at it's best and in an amazing beach location! We loved staying with Matthias and Riki, beautiful people with many life experience to tell. Nothing was too much trouble and they were always happy to help. We are not keen on doing tourist tours and feeling like a herd of intrusive visitors so Matthias'offered to take us out snorkeling around the stunning lagoon on his boat which was perfect. He also served us a delicious, locally sourced healthy lunch. Matriki Beach Hut has soul, unlike top notch inpersonal hotels;and in a world where there is so much waste and over consumerism, this place showcased quirky, basic but all you need amenities. We loved the recycling and eco features, living in harmony with nature. Well done and thank you Matthias and Riki; we'll be back. Love and hugs.

We loved this accomodation but if your looking for a flashy resort Holiday this may not be for you. The spot is magic! Rustic beach HUTS , built by your host Mattius , nestled among the coconut palms and a lovely tropical garden. The outdoor shower is solar and the toilets were separate but spotlessly clean. Step out out of your hut and onto the beach to go snorkeling (see the giant clams!) Light a small fire on the beach snd watch the sunset. All equipment including bikes ( not the flashiest but fine) provided free. We paid for Mattius to take us on a snorkeling tour ( cheapest on the island) and found once again we had avoided the main tourist industry to experience something unique. Not only did we did we see whales, swim with turtles and Giant Trevally but we got to see and learn about the nesting birds and the problems they face on the outer islands. Nesting boobies and Red Tailed Tropic birds. A delicious lunch ( described by the very understated Mattius as a light snack. ) was perfect. It was also nice to know that our money was going 100% into the local economy. We didn't want to leave and can't wait to get back.

The location on the lagoon, the loving quirkiness of the huts, the warm welcome of the hosts and the ambience make this a jewel of a place to stay. You can't help but feel happy here in this perfect little paradise. Of course it was superb weather during my stay, but I expect it is also special in the rain.
I loved this place and would return if given the chance. For a single traveller it was perfect.

The spot was nice, it needs a bit of restoration around. We (me and my fiancée) were looking for a quiet and relaxing place where to spend our Christmas holidays. We booked Matriki because of the positive reviews we read.... We discovered later that the place was under new management.
We had to deal everyday with an old man (Matthias) who was popping around our hut to press us about booking a boat cruise with him (he was interrupting us pretty often during our breakfast/lunch/tea time). When we finally accepted, it the day after he cancelled the trip.In the end his wife booked us with another guy, she dropped us at the harbour and we had a great time till back to the harbour none showed up to drive us back. We tried to call but no answer: a couple who did the trip with us kindly drove to Matriki to tell them to come and pick us up. This was the worst service ever, apart from that we've been pushed more than once to rent bikes/scooters, the only few courtesies services have been 1 paw paw and 2 passion fruit gifted at the arrival and 2 rides (literally 2-3 minutes drive) to shops.
No customer service AT ALL: the old man completely with no manners (if you wanna sell service you have to provide a good one), no organization for tour, things to do and to see.
In conclusion: Aitutaki is a paradise, but if you search Matriki Beach Huts, wait until next management's take over!!!

Kia Orana Arianna. Thank you for appreciating what a nice spot we have here. We are sorry that you are unhappy about your stay at Matriki. Thank you for mentioning the gifted fruit. Unfortunately, the storm which happened the evening before your arrival, destroyed most of our papaya and banana trees and new trees will take 8months to grow again. Regarding service, I am sorry that my attempts to take care of you were experienced as being pushy. To make your stay easier, Riki offered to take you shopping when you arrived, as the other 6 guests were not arriving until the late afternoon and she had free time then. We are self- servicing huts and people usually take bicycles or scooters to do their shopping and this was a courtesy. When you declined because you wanted to just relax after travel, we were not expecting you to come later. Late in the afternoon when the 6 new guests arrived and we were busy with the process of checking them in, you came and asked if we could take you shopping then. Riki was still happy to help. The drive to the shops, although a short car ride away, took a while, as Riki took you to 3 shops and waited for you in the car until you had finished. In regards to rental bikes, we were making sure that you and your fiancee were aware that we were expecting more guests in the afternoon and that if you wanted a motorbike, that it was only fair to offer them to you first. I apologise if you both felt that I was pushing the motorbikes onto you. I wanted to make sure that you were ok for transport. As anticipated, the afternoon guests rented out all the motorbikes for the duration of their 10 day stay. When I picked you up from the airport, your fiancée expressed an interest in doing three trips to the lagoon, one trip being the Matriki snorkelling cruise. Because of the rough weather conditions, we informed you about the option of booking with one of the three tour operators that have large covered boats that can handle poor weather conditions, so that you could at least get one of the trips for sure. So, I would come down to your hut to update you on weather conditions and options, trying my best to provide good service. Our tours are weather depending and we cannot lock in a definite date during rough weather conditions. In times like that the decision for a cruise is usually made on the day, as weather reports are not always reliable. Because most of your stay was during bad weather, it made it difficult to organise tours. On your second to last day, when due to the strong winds - 45kmh and gusting 50kmh- I cancelled your planned taxi trip to One Foot Island, Riki suggested that you accompany the other guest on a kite surfing tour to Honeymoon island on a larger boat, which was one of the islands you had wished to see. That particular tour operator was having car problems on the day, which was unusual, and he was unable to pick you up. He told us that everyone had to pay for an independent shuttle and make their own way to the wharf. We decided that rather than have all of you pay that additional expense, we would provide a lift for you for free. Riki informed you on the drive to the wharf, that she would most likely not be available to pick you up in the afternoon, and that you may have to organise with the tour operator to call the shuttle service in the event that we did not answer the phone. Also, it was unclear what time the tour you were on would get back to the wharf, as it was basically for people who were kitesurfing, with an open time frame. As it was, we heard the phone ring at about 5pm, but didn’t get to it in time. But I thought it might be you, so I drove down to pick you up. At that time in the car when your fiancee asked re the lagoon trip the next day, it was confirmed. At 9am the next day the boat and the others were ready to go. I came to your hut to let you know - you were still asleep. When you at that point decided not to come along I was upset and yes I didn’t hide it, because the whole organising for that trip on your last day, Xmas day, had been for you. Not hiding my upset may have been unprofessional and I apologise for that. As the others were staying longer I suggested that we do the trip the next day with better weather and they all agreed wholeheartedly. The kitesurfing tour was independent of Matriki and Riki was glad to suggest it and I was able to organise it for you, as we wanted you to have the lagoon experience and get the most out of your stay in spite of the weather conditions. When we book with other tour operators, the onus is on them to pick up guests, not us. As well as giving people general information when they arrive, there is an information booklet in the huts about places to eat, island nights, shops, etc. Once again, I am sorry that you feel unhappy about your stay with us. Riki and Matthias, owner/ operators of Matriki Beach Huts

I don`t understand all the very good reviews online. The huts are well overprized. They are runover and not clean. Its really hot in there.
If they were less expensive, I could say that it`s the spot that counts. But really, well overprized. Loads of mozzies as the property isn`t well looked after now that Erica isn`t there anymore.
The owner (woman) is really helpful but her husband (German) could do better. He seems to be nervous about having taken over the huts last year. He was not friendly to our kids.

I can`t recommend these beach huts. They look so much nicer online. There were other people staying there as well who thought the same but won`t write a review.

Aitutaki, and especially the lagoon is outstanding.

By the way: Looking at the review one above: I wouldnt even call this acommodation GLAMPING. It was worse than that. And we are easy going and have travelled the World.

Response from Matthias Hagen, Owner at Matriki Beach Huts
Responded 13 Mar 2020
Thank you for appreciating that I was helpful during your stay. In response to your mentioning that you do not understand the good reviews online; in my opinion, it is simply that people have different expectations and attitudes about their experiences and what they choose to focus on. We offer basic, rustic huts on a great swimming and snorkelling beach. We charge $130 a night per hut for 2 people, whereas the two luxury resorts either side of us charge about 4 – 6 times as much. Reflected in that price distinction comes all the extra amenities/comfort and air conditioning. Our guests have the possibility of staying budget, while being able to access the resort next door and enjoy the restaurant and island night show. Due to the isolation of the island, most things are expensive and have to be freighted in, which is reflected in food, accommodation costs etc. I would advise anyone reading this that if you are looking for more of a mid-range, or resort type environment, then Matriki Beach Huts would not be a good fit. We are a budget, entry level, alternative -lifestyle type property which offers direct access to a lovely beach, charging about the same per person as the backpackers in town. According to our records the only time a couple with children stayed was in January 2020, not November as stated, which was still during Erica’s time. They arrived the day after our second big storm, during the same time period as the positive January review. Cyclone season weather can be changeable and debris is part of it. During their stay, and it didn’t happen often, the couple went out and left their children on the property unsupervised. Matthias, who speaks German, had to set boundaries during those times in regards to their playing areas as we also had other guests. In the tropics we have mosquitos, and when it rains a lot there tends to be more, and we provide mosquito coils for the guests to use. Erica is my daughter and both Matthias and I were “hands on” during her and Byron’s management. Response from Riki

While its not everyones cup of tea, we just loved this cute bungalow experience. Back to the basics, beach front holiday. While its prob only a 2 star accommodation it is all we needed. Everything supplied, sheets, towels, fully equipped kitchen, fly spray, bug burners, mosquito net over bed, mesh on windows, fan, fridge with wee freezer box and ice trays, drinking water, great snorkeling directly infront, white sand, onsite scooter hire, bonfires, amazing island/lagoon cruise and more. (Shared Toilet is 1 min walk from bungalow)

We stayed in the garden unit, slightly back from the beach, but the indoor bathroom made it worth it. We cooked at home some nights - fill your suitcase with groceries in NZ if you can, because shopping is limited.

Matriki has a new gas BBQ near the shore where the spectacular sunsets happen, so bring meat too! The picnic tables on the beach are a great place to socialise with other guests. One night we even had a fire on the sand.

I highly recommend the Island Night at the next-door Tamanu Beach Resort, but suggest reserving a table as soon as you have flights booked because it is popular. We found it difficult to get tables at other restaurants and resorts as well.

Matriki's owner Matthias took us on the best snorkelling tour we have ever done, so we did it a second time. Swam with humpback whale and calf, green turtles, flocks of eagle rays, heaps of coloured fish, landed on several islands to see rare birds, giant clams, a shipwreck, and finally a dozen giant trevally and a Napoleon wrasse all about a metre long and swimming all around us.

I think it fairly likely I will make a return visit one cold winter.

Not your typical commercial resort experience. This small family run accommodation is a real joy, placed right on the beach with the option of an epic lagoon boat tour by the owner. He knows the best spots to make your stay truly memorable. Everything you need for that castaway feeling.

We stayed for 8 nights in this absolute beach front hut. This is not the place if you want aircon and other luxuries, but these back to basic huts were perfect. A few metres to the beach, SUPs available, and on a beach that was fantastic for the sunsets and the snorkelling out from the huts. We took a lagoon cruise with the owner- great all day cruise to beautiful spots- highly recommended.
We hope to return and do it all over again.

Matriki Beach Huts is a fantastic option for people seeking a tranquil accommodation option, beach front, amongst beautiful, mature gardens. Rikki and Matthias were exception hosts - helping us get set up with transport, taking me on a small, informative lagoon and snorkelling boat tour, and generally being friendly, with daily fascinating chats. If we return to Aitutaki, we'll definitely be booking in again. We loved the atmosphere at Matriki.

George all the Matriki Beach Hut information you need is on their web page including their email address which is on the bottom of the page and yes Aitutaki is the right airport
Answer from Matthias H
Kia Orana! We have cleaned it up a lot since we took over management 1 month ago. It wasn't so much in need of renovation - it needed a freshen up, paint here and there and a good clean, and a bit of an upgrade with some of the equipment. It is now clean, tidy and safe. We will be doing ongoing improvements but it is very nice at the moment and is value for money. Regards Erica

The shortest walk to shared toilets of all the accommodations we had stayed so far during our world travel. I was a bit concerned first as well, as we prefer en suite. But it is more than just worth to stay at Matriki. The toilet situation is convenient and not a bother m, plus you automatically save a lot of precious rain water. The outdoor shower is lovely, hard to stop showering :)
