Here for two nights while birding - June 2022. Clean comfortable room/accommodations. Friendly staff helped resolve a room issue. Convenient restaurant on-site where we took all our meals. Would stay here again next time. 3 floors, 2 elevators.
We (two couples) planned a trip to Barrow as part of our overall trip to Alaska. This is the primary (only?) hotel in Barrow (Utqiagvik). It was taking extra precautions (for their hotel, their staff, their community, and their guests – we really respected that). The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms were great. Unfortunately, their excellent restaurant (the name is Niġġivikput) was “take-Out” only so we were not able to eat in. However, we ordered our food and it was excellent. The staff at both the hotel and the restaurant were excellent; very friendly and courteous. As with other purchases in Alaska, expect fairly high prices (most everything has to be shipped in). However, the $18 hamburger and fries were probably the largest and the best I’ve ever had.…
Although the price is a little bit high, but it's all worth it. The hotel has a good wait room that we can kind of changing camera equipment and other things before going in or going out. Front desk was friendly but does not have too many information. The room was pretty comfortable, and I think it's the best one among the only 2 hotels in town. The location was really good. It's a short distance to whale arch, and it's good to take pictures from there for aurora. I took a lot of photos there and I like it. The hotel is close to everything so you probably can walk in the town easily, but you might still need a taxi ride in winter because it's toooo cold.
The rooms are clean and spacious. Similar to a Holiday Inn. Hosts are cold and seem almost bothered by your presence. What was painful is that our flights were not until 5:30pm. The whole town is closed to dine-in due to COVID so we asked for a late checkout. They offered to let us stay til 3pm for $100 extra. There were hardly any guests at the hotel so it would cost them nothing to let us stay a little later when there was nowhere for us to go and the weather was 20 degrees out. Unkind and seemed to try and capitalize on COVID situation.
Honestly didn't know what to expect given the remoteness of the location and this not being a brand name hotel, but everything was as or exceeded expectations. The rooms were comfortable and well appointed. Everything was clean. Plenty of hot water in the shower and sufficient water pressure. My only gripe was that rooms on the side of the hotel facing the road have to hear rode noise from dirt bikes, atvs, and vehicles until late into the evening.
The rooms are nice and the hotel did it's best under COVID conditions. Nice location because you can walk right out and walk along the shore and well as see the summertime sun from your window (if you pay extra for the rooms that face the ocean). You can also walk to the store and museum - only about half mile away down the road.
For Utqiagvik this is the place to stay. The rooms are comfortable and have great views of the town + Arctic Ocean. If you want to see the ocean definitely opt for a Deluxe/Premium room. The food is to go, but that seems to be due to local regulations. The staff is very friendly, and one gentleman even loaned me his cell phone to place a restaurant delivery order when my phone wasn't working. That was just a very kind gesture and stuck with me. If I come back to Utqiagvik (which I certainly hope to do), I will definitely stay here.
Room, hotel and location is nice - clean spacious rooms, some with Arctic ocean views! (but location is not easily walkable from the airport). UIC car rentals near the airport will rent you a Ford Escape or bigger. I asked the front desk about other tour options and they mentioned Arctic Hummer Adventures which does not seem open (don't respond to phone calls or FB messages). For a tour of town or to see wildlife I recommend Mike Shults 907 852 3972 / 907 355 2204 (August 2021)
A friend and I stayed overnight and found it to be a really nice place, and very comfortable, especially considering how remote it is! They provided a shuttle to take us to and from the airport, and though the restaurant was take-out only, what we ordered was very good. Everyone was incredibly nice. There is a grocery store a very short walk away from the hotel as well. Wish we could have stayed longer!
Really nice comfortable stay right at the edge of the Arctic Ocean! One of the few restaurants in town is a one minute walk, and so is the beach to walk along the ocean. Very nice stay, and very friendly staff at the desk during check-in and driving us to the airport! Nothing to do with the hotel, but fyi, getting around besides walking the town and beach really requires access to a car to get around the outskirts and to see the tundra. Would definitely stay again!
