If you must stay in San Jose, Costa Rica, then this is a nice hotel...close to all the action and good restaurants, shopping and a pharmacy all close.
You will not be bother by hookers here but if that is on your menu you can crawl to the Hotel Del Rey....

Well what can I say about this hotel? The best thing it has going for it is the price and it's clean. If you are looking for no thrills accommodation that is central to the nightlife, shopping, and restaurants then this is probably your best bet for <$60 a night standard room.

-Charge extra for breakfast/room safe
-free wireless internet
-in house casino (change $ to colonas)
-satellite TV
-showers w/plenty hot water.
-guest friendly
-Staff friendly (Angie/Yuri are the best)
-book tours through them.

Rooms are rather small and very outdated w/noisy aircon units and also might find it hard to sleep if you go to bed early. (noisy outside and in house bar are the main culprits)

I've stayed at the Morazan twice and I'll be there again this Halloween. I always ask for a room on the third floor or higher. Usually they are very accommodating. Rooms are usually about fifty bucks, but this includes a very filling breakfast featuring 2 eggs to order, ham or bacon, toast, hash browns, fruit juice and coffee. That's easily a ten dollar saving. Also, all the rooms are reserved for two people, so that guest you bring up in the afternoon or evening is at no cost, a saving of fifteen to twenty five dollars. The Morazan is just a block away from the Del Rey Casino/Hotel which features some of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. If you have a problem with noise from the street or from the Key Largo Club next door, tune your TV to a non-broadcasting station and turn up the volume. The "white noise" will allow you to sleep restfully. See you in October; I'll be the Victorian Vampire.

I recently stayed at Hotel Morazan in mid February. Upon arriving at the hotel, I noticed how rundown The hotel was. "I didn't let that bother me",until I see the inside of the hotel. I arrived with a friend Who recommended the hotel because of the great prices and they do not charge for bringing visitors in. "Which is a big plus in my book". Reservations were made months in advance, but as soon as we checked in at the front desk. They said the rooms wasn't available. I read previous trip advisor warnings but I didn't follow it , about them saying The rooms are not available. "That will strike one" ! Ricky Ricardo The guy in charge offered me a smaller room than what I ask for, so I had no choice but to take it.
As I entered the room ,the room wasn't that bad except for a look little old. Old box TV, an outdated decor. I could at least say it was very clean. My second day there I noticed a lot of open empty rooms and when I asked about the rooms being available for a change they would say that they're booked already. The hotel the week I was there was not full. And I think they're selective when it comes to visitors. Especially gringos ! they lied about a room that I wanted that I seen the whole week empty. "this was strike two" ! My third day there I noticed more empty rooms and no visitors. And when I ask is not available. I honestly been keeping track of at least five rooms in the hotel that had no visitors the whole time all of their. Even though Ricky Ricardo made my stay there okay and was constantly asking me if everything is okay, I still felt pissed because you and the Front desk lied about the rooms. " this was strike 3"!
Even though the prices are good and they don't charge for outside visitors to your room, I would not stay here ever again. "Front desk is very unprofessional" ,"they're not honest" & The lack of customer service. When I'm in town I will bring my talents to Del Rey across to street.

I've stayed in the Morazan at least 20 times. I've kind of put up with the old tv's, the remote control that doesn't work, the wet air coming out of the AC, the stains on the carpet, the burnt cigarette holes in the sheets, the tired red boring furniture, the annoying bell boy Ricky, the emotionless staff at the front desk, and last but not least the HORRIFIC internet service. But this time, i have had enough. In the 10 years i've been going to this hotel, they haven't changed a dang thing! Same TV's, same sheets, same carpet, same everything! THis hotel is stuck in the 80's. The bell boy Ricky was SUPER rude to me and my brother as we pulled up. He wouldn't let my brother park in front of the hotel to unload my bags. He said that space is for ambulance's only. In 10 years i've been going there, i have yet to see one ambulance in the city, let alone in front of this dang hotel!!! This hotel needs to upgrade big time. I will not stay here again.

I've stayed in the Morazan around 20 times in all my travels through CR. I only like it because of the location, and that's about it. It's right slap in the middle of all the action. There are 5 casinos within minutes of each other from this spot. Right behind the hotel is a miniature dance spot called Key Largo (all working girls though) but it's nice just to go in and watch the action. Ricky Ricardo the door man is as about annoying as one can be. If you don't tip him, he will treat you differently through out your stay. Angie used to work the front desk, but not anymore, i sure miss her. Jose the Cuban guy is great, i think he went to the Europa. There is another Cuban girl that works nights that is an amazing woman too. They have a beautiful new girl working the front her name is Viviana, and they don't get much better looking than her.
The second floor is as noisy as all get out...the cars outside are a pain in the butt to listen to starting at about 5am. Also there is a disco/restaruant on the second floor that gets really loud on Friday and Saturday nights. However, what are you doing in your room on Friday and Sat nights??? So that shouldn't be a problem.
The drinks in that bar are expensive, the room service is expensive, but the tall goofy skinny dude that works in the bar at night is a great guy, i've known him for years.
For the most part the ladies that clean the rooms are very nice, including Grace the head house maid.
Cons (all in order)

No WIFI
No Flat Screens
No Irons
Small Safes
Old furniture
Overpriced drinks and food in the restaurant

did i mention Location??

Last bit of information. Don't use the pharmacy across the street, they are way overpriced. Just walk around, you'll find one that is much cheaper. The eye doctor across the street is a rip off also, i bought a pair of frames from him and when i got home they broke.

Last but not least, DO NOT wander around at night by yourself,
Hope this helps

You can't go wrong if you are a single male traveler on a tight budget. The Morazan does need a face lift, and a deep cleaning. As mentioned previously, the staff is a big help, especially Angie and the heavy set bellman.
I disagree with the review that says the Morazan is located in a safe neighborhood.
Yes, during the day you are safe;- but in the evening the creeps are roaming the streets looking for soft targets. Spend the $6 and put your money and passport in the room safe. Carry a photo copy of your passport at all times.

Everytime Im passing through San Jose, I stay at the Morazan. San Jose is not really the kind of city you want to stay in more than one night, but if you want to explore the city, the Morazan is a great location. Its one block away from the main shopping area, and is in a pretty safe area. The front desk staff are what make this hotel one of my favorites. Always very helpful, and for those of you who dont speak Spanish, they speak english. The rooms have hot showers, huge bonus if youve been mostly backpacking and staying in hostels. I will mention, however, that, unfortuneatly, you will witness young prostitutes go upstairs with old, American men on a regular basis. Prostitution is legal there. You will see them hanging around there and the Del Rey hotel, down the street. And the streets of San Jose get quite loud at night. If your looking for quiet and romantic, dont stay here. As I indicated, the Morazan is great place, when passing thru. This hotel is also pretty central to all the major bus terminals, and the front desk will call you a cab and explain to them where to take you (if you dont know spanish).

Stayed here Super Bowl weekend. Good location 1 block from Avenida Central and Parque Morzan. Paid $41 a night for a basic single room. Cable Tv, A/C and room safe (extra $6 a day for safe key). Although the carpets seemed to be fairly new and the bathrooms looked like they had been recently refurbished the Hotel looked very worn. Our six room were very clean but smelled of cigarette smoke. Since Hotel has a casino and smoking in public is accepted in Costa Rica. All the common areas reeked of cigarette and cigar smoke. Free use of lobby internet and printer. Hotel also has free wireless internet but you can only get the signal on the 3rd floor. Small casino and betting room. $2 beer at the bar keeps the place jumping with locals on the weekend. Lots of single men use this place for its proximity to the infamous Hotel Del Rey. Overall not a bad experience. Not the Ritz but also not a complete dump. Good value. friendly helpful staff.

Over all this is a good hotel for the price. Front desk lady was nice & profesional , the security people were attentive & courteous, there's also a heave set nice guy who's always trying to help you but he only smiles when you tip him:)). My room was on 4th floor, standard room, small but very clean with small twin bed, looked like the room was recently renovated, flat screen tv was good but i could only find 4 English channels & the rest were Spanish. The internet speed was decent as well, no refrigerator in standard rooms!! The only bad news about this floor or maybe all floors is the loud noise from next door club in which continues until 2 or sometimes 3:00 am almost every single night, i hardly got any sleep at night, so be prepared with some ear plugs...LOL
The free breakfast is one of the best in town & people working at the restaurant are also great. The bar & restaurant on 2nd floor serves really cold beers & delicious hot meals all day long and at reasonable price, i really liked their touchdown tacos & chicken sandwich with excellent fries...
This hotel is adult only and in central location close to all the museums , parks & other adult bars. I don't know if I'd be back at this hotel again(Because Of loud night noise) but i'd definitely be back at their restaurant for the cold beer & some good food....
