We were greeted by Pedro who is porter, receptionist and waiter!!
Restaurant food was good home cooking, grilled pork chop with mashed potato and vegetables was tasty. Decor back in the 60/70s, clean and acceptable.
No air conditioning in room so luckily it wasn’t too hot.

Hotel appears to have been built in the 70's and is becoming 'thread bare.' Large room, ample restaurant food. Lots of artwork in hall and restaurant. Hotel is in an industrial type area, not really walkable. Friendly and helpful staff.

We, a family of 4, stayed here on a 2 week self-guided tour of Costa Rica, one night at the beginning and 2 nights at the end. I stay in quite a few hotels but rarely write reviews as I am not fussy and usually don't feel I have anything new to pass on to fellow travellers. Of this hotel I would say the following. Being on a tour, I don't know exactly what it cost. So it may well have been good value. Certainly the hotel was very popular with organised group tours - there were often coaches unloading or loading huge groups into or out of the lobby. Our room was reasonable and the facilities, including a pool which we did not use, seemed OK. 3 important points. 1. Noise. The road outside is busy and noisy ALL night. On arrival we were severely jet-lagged and didn't mind-we could have slept through anything. On returning, we had requested a room at the back, which request had been ignored. We got ourselves moved and our room on the back was much quieter, except for a noise like a jackhammer when next door turned their taps on. 2. Water. We never had any hot water. there is supposed to be a schedule, with the heater only turned on at certain times to save energy. Their website just advertises the availability of "hot water" and on checking in, no-one tells you about this schedule. Reception were quite vague as to when hot water ought to be available and the long and short of it is, we never got any. 3. Location. The hotel is a couple of miles out of the town centre. We could happily walk this in the daytime. At night, knowing nothing about the town or the area, most people wouldn't want to. Thus you're stuck with the hotel restaurant (OK, not great value or great choice) or a taxi. One reviewer notes that just up the hill there is a commercial centre - this is true but we found very few places open there and just a couple of restaurants which were OK but pricey. This centre, "El Pueblo" or something like that is reviewed elsewhere on the net - basicly it's a tourist trap with a lot of expensive bars and nightclubs wanting to attract the younger US crowd - but it seems to be struggling.

I spent two days in San Jose on business, and on the advice of my business associate, had avoided the hotels on Central Avenue, instead he recommended the Villa Tournon, an easy 15 minute walk from downtown, and 2 minute walk from the 'Pueblo' entertainment area. From the minute I walked through the door, the hotel staff were friendly and welcoming, and the room was spotlessly clean. The furnishings are not the newest, but the bed was comfortable and the room was more than adequate. For the TV watchers, there are 70+ channels, of which around 10 were in English, mainly cable channels from the US.

The cleanliness and the welcoming staff would certainly make this my choice next time I am in San Jose.

We stayed for one night at each end of a group tour of Costa Rica. It was apparent that groups make up much of the hotels clientele. The service was generally good.

The hotel and its rooms certainly need some refurbishment. The air conditioning is old, not thermostatically controlled and noisy. The bathroom had a shower over a bath, which was not easy to get into if one has mobility problems. The beds were OK, but the beds in both of the rooms had the lumpiest pillows I have come across. However, the hotel does have a certain individual charm that you do not find in modern hotels and it would be a shame to lose this.

There is a lift down to the rooms and swimming pool.

The swimming pool was a real bonus in a city hotel.

Breakfast was buffet style and nothing special the restaurant provides a varied menu and the meals we received were adequate. The food and wine prices we thought were reasonable

We stayed at this hotel at the start, and end of our trip to Costa Rica. Our second room (one floor down from reception) was much nicer than our first. The first room was on the same level as reception, and was very small, and had 40 mosquitoes in the bath/shower room. The second room was large, had a double bed, two comfy chairs, and had a much nicer bath/shower room. Unlike the first room, it also had a plug in the washbasin – the only one we encountered when staying at six different hotels in Costa Rica. It's bath did not have a plug though. So, when you visit this beautiful country, bring your own plug.

There is a good choice of breakfast: the traditional rice and beans (gallo pinto), scrambled eggs, sausages, fresh fruit, ham, cheese, toast, fruit juice and tea/coffee.

We were concerned about the location though – having heard gun shots outside the hotel room during the first night. Some of our group did venture out to a nearby restaurant at night. We explored this nearby street in daylight and, having spotted the razor wire at the top of the walls on the houses, and broken glass on route, we decided that it would be safer to dine in the hotel. Good call as there was gun fire outside this nearby restaurant later that night. We did walk into the centre of San Jose in the morning; this only took around 10 minutes, and this route seemed safe enough in daytime.

The hotel has a large, cold, refreshing pool in beautiful gardens, so it is possible to exercise, without leaving the safety of the hotel.

I stayed for one night in this hotel at the beginning of an organised tour. The reception staff were extremely friendly and helpful but I found the room to be drab, in need of a good spring clean!! The bed had seen better days and very uncomfortable, the room very noisy from street traffic. The restaurant staff again very friendly but the food menu pretty basic. Outside the swimming pool area was scruffy with broken chairs and loungers....I would not recommend this hotel.

We stayed here for 4 nights, 3 before our tour and one after and before the flight home. The reception is very helpful but I feel they are held back by the dated and arrogant approach of the management/owner who are definitely not in touch with the modern traveller's requirements. There was no facility to arrange a hotel taxi to collect from the airport, something that most hoteliers now appreciate is a welcome service to travellers who have come a long way and just want to see a friendly face with a card with their name on it when arriving at a foreign airport. We could not print our boarding passes because the hotel's computer available for guests was not linked to a printer, and the hotel reception computer was not linked to the internet. Not a catastrophe but a bit behind the times.
The hotel has great assets but appears to want to discourage their use and does not appear to see them as a means of generating income, see comments below about the dining room and barman.
The rooms are tired and very noisy...and that smell of air freshener was not good. The breakfast is dull and repetitive, and the one meal we had in the evening was bearable. I just get the feeling that there is no good leadership here, and my goodness it needs it!

This was the starting point for a group tour of Central America. It was perfectly ok after a long flight and slept well. Not in a nice part of town though. Full of young group from USA who were not especially well behaved.
Room was acceptable and clean. Buffet breakfast was very good with choice and staff pleasant.

Hey, Sorry, I just saw this question now. I would contact the owner. Google, Villa Tournon. It's a great hotel in a great location in San Jose. I'm sure the owner would give you a better price for staying so long.
