This hotel offers the feel of old San Jose but with updated modern conviences. We enjoyed the helpful and curteous staff and free secure parking. Definely a place to consider staying for an old world feel.

Good value, basic rooms, lovely breakfast on the terrace in central San Jose. The chap on the front desk was a little strange, but overall if you're after a cheap no frills room get involved.

We stayed at Hotel Don Carlos for 1 night in December 2011. The hotel is conveniently located in the center of San Jose. The Jade Museum is across the street and you can easily walk to the theater. The staff was very helpful and friendly, also speaking English in case your Spanish is not so good. Breakfast was great. I...

We arrived here from the airport late afternoon, after a long flight to spend our first night here before moving on and it was just fine for that. The room was basic but comfortable and clean, no insects, everything worked ok. We found the reception helpful, they changed some of our large currency notes into smaller ones for us for...

I found this place very comfortable as a single woman visiting San Jose. Staff at the desk and restaurant were very helpful and friendly (spoke English and Spanish), and the location was very convenient - on the same block as the Jade Museum, and a short walk down to the main pedestrian plaza where the Gold Museum is housed. The...

Spent one night and was chased off by the bedbugs, old musty bed covers, and a 6:30 am wake-up from other guests' voices in the hallway, which appears to double as a sound amplifier. Good location and friendly staff, but this place badly needs a renovation. And a fumigator.

I had been warned and also read a lot of advice about not staying in San Jose because it was shady and there wasn't much to see. Despite the advice, I still wanted to see the city. I'm glad I chose the Hotel Don Carlos -- it had friendly staff members, large rooms, a bar and restaurant with street-side, watch-the-world-go-by...

For about $85 dollars a night, the Don Carlos hotel, located about a 2 minute drive to the road to Limon, is a great find. The neighborhood is a little sketchy, or seems so at least, though there is a parking garage that is closed, and a security guard on call all night. The treasure of this place is that...

Whenever I visit San Jose I like to stay at this small and centrally located hotel as the rooms are large and comfortable. The only problem is that at night the neighborhood could be dangerous as the sexual workers come out of the shadows to ply their trades. The restaurant food is not bad but a bit expensive. I would...

Best to be taken here the first time. We were driving & trying to follow the map & street signs (or lack thereof) in this busy, bustling city & it took quite a few drive arounds before finally finding it (one way streets contribute to confusion). The hotel is in a very good central location to walking access of the...
