Very nice room and fresh breakfast! Location is perfect, right on the end of Avenue Central plaza. Quick walk to shops, parks and Gold Museum. Staff was super helpful with bags, directions and taxi to airport. Highly recommend and will stay here again if I'm ever in San Jose.

Thank you very much for your rating and comment. I am glad it was a unique experience. As you said, we are located in the Historic Center of San Jose, where the most important theaters, museums and historic buildings of the city are located. Best regards.

We stayed for three nights at different points during an Intrepid trip. The hotel is in a fantastic, central location which is surrounded by museums, shops and a few places to eat on the main pedestrian thoroughfare of the city centre. The local area was well policed and felt safe most of the time but felt a little sketchier at night and on the surrounding roads.
The hotel is a little old and dated but was perfectly functional for our purposes. Room was clean and reasonably comfortable but nothing to write home about.

The included breakfast was delicious in the mornings in the restaurant next door; fresh fruit, gallo pinto, plantain etc. The restaurant itself for all other meals though is best avoided. We ate dinner there twice during our stay. Service was slow, food was of poor quality and was quite badly cooked. We had pizzas, black bean soup and the vegetable wrap. All were quite miserable and the prices are quite high.

We recently stayed at Balmoral Hotel for one night. It was a pretty good experience. There was some confusion about our room because we booked a room with two beds (because there are 3 of us - 2 adults and 1 kid) and when we arrived we were told they "upgraded" us for a lower price to a room with a king bed. We did not want a room with one king bed. The room was nice, just not what we had wanted. My son ended up sleeping on a couch (although they offered to bring a bed - not sure what the bed would have been like). We asked for sheets to put on the couch in the room and were only given a comforter. Overall, the hotel was nice. The restaurant had good food and a really nice breakfast. The central location was nice. Very close to the gold museum.

I booked this hotel because were staying in San Jose for 2 nights and just needed somewhere clean and central. Our troubles started before we even arrived.
I had contacted the hotel to pick us up from the airport for $35, a service they advertise on their website. Everything was confirmed with a signature from Enzo at the front desk(I printed the confirmation email). Of course, when we landed no one was there. We just waited there for about 30 minuted and ended up taking a sketchy fake taxi to the hotel at about 11 pm at night.

When we arrived at the hotel the front desk told us they cancelled the driver because a colleague told them we didn't need it anymore. Made no sense and I showed them the confirmation. They said they would check into it blah blah blah and never followed up and did anythig whatsoever.

Then we were shown to our room which was a completely different room that I had booked, and it smelled like urine. It only had one bed and was was tiny. I told them and showed them my booking and they moved us to a room with two double beds that was much nicer. So annoying. Also the safe in our room was broken and even though we called to fix it, some guy came up, fiddled with it and left and nit never got fixed so we had to carry out passports around with us the whole time.

We checked out and my husband realized he had left a pair of shoes and a shirt in the room. I emailed them FIVE TIMES starting from the night we checked out until we left five days, but zero response! (IN contrast, when I emailed them to book an airport ride, they emailed back within the day). Finally Marianela Hidalgo responded and said

"Hello. I check with the housekeeper and dont have the pants.
Any cuestion you can call to the hotel".

Pants?! Not even the right clothing item.

Anyway, horrendous customer service, screwed up multiple things, not worth the moderate price at all.

Basic room with no frills, but we didn't stay in the city for a view. We had an interior room, which at first glance was disappointing but it turned out to be an oasis of quiet in the busy city. Hard to beat the location, as we could exit right onto Avenida Central (pedestrian street) and walk a few minutes to everything we wanted to see. Restaurant staff did seem a little frantic/overworked but we were happy with both meals we ate there (dinner & breakfast). We had initially seen "Transport" as a service listed on their website, and thought we'd be able to get a free ride to the airport. The front desk did arrange for us to get picked up, however we had to pay the private taxi driver directly for the service. We checked out an hour before breakfast started, and they had thoughtfully boxed up some food to go, even though we didn't request any--a really nice touch to end our stay!

Great location in the pedestrian area of central San Jose, close to all the key historic and cultural attractions and an excellent base for exploring this historic capital city. The Balmoral staff was very friendly and helpful, and the room was quite large, clean and had a full fridge and microwave plus lots of storage space An enclosed balcony overlooking the pedestrian street was a nice surprise, The restaurant was a large airy facility with a brick oven pizza area, a nice cafe and wine cellar with an open air dining area. Food was great both in variety and quality, at a reasonable price, with friendly staff. We truly enjoyed our 6 nights at the Balmoral

This hotel is located at the start of the pedestrian street and two blocks away from national museum so its as safe as you will get in SJ. it is a safe street, actually this is the street to stay in if you want to get out of hotel and walk, its the safest part of town, many people, places to eat and cops.
Costa Rica is a beautiful country but SJ is not a beautiful city, pretty much everything there is to see is on that street or a black from it, so it is what it is, reason why tourist come and stay one night and head home, if you do this I recommend this hotel, if you have a higher budget there is one on that same area, I am glad I didnt stay two blocks away from this street. Covid restrictions made it that by 7pm things start to close and by 9pm its empty.
The Hotel is clean, the staff is super friendly, the stores in first floor at mostly closed because of covid sadly, rooms are small but clean and comfortable beds. has safe parking for your car.
I was suppose to stay one night but my flight was cancelled, asked if they could give me another night at same price, not only that but he gave me that room at a 40% discount or larger room at same price, you dont see that often knowing I was happy with same price.
So if you go to SJ and want to walk around town, I recommend this hotel.

We stayed there for 5 nights in 3 different rooms. Superior room was nice and comfortable, Superior plus room was perfect and very comfortable, but the view was awfull. Hotel is located in the center of the city, breakfast was good. Standard room was very, very small, without windows(the small "window" was looking at the inside hotel corridor). Storage for luggage was dirty and full of dust. We could not check in before 2 pm, (we arrived at 10.30 am), entrance to hotel lobby is through parking garrage. We had 3 separate bookings in 3 different rooms in 5 days, but they were not able to give us one room for all 5 nights but had to check in and out for 3 times. If we wanted to stay in one room, we should have payed additionally about 1000 USD.

Staff very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The room and beds were clean and comfortable. The staff even booked a taxi for us to the airport the next day and took payment by credit card so we didn’t have to get more local currency.
We were right on one of the main shopping streets in San Jose which is bustling with local life, although a little shabby around the edges, it was a perfect stop-off before we got our flight the next day,
Breakfast was great too!
Thank you Balmoral! :-) We will stay again!

Very convenient location, helpful staff, good breakfast and clean room. So, I would have given 5 stars if we didn't have 1 problem. When we checked in for 5 nights, we were upgraded to suite room. The room was comfortable and clean except, when we walked in, we smelled faint sewage smell coming from somewhere. Since we appreciated up grade and it was late at night, we didn't complain. Next day, the smell got stronger and we tried to open the window but we could only open very small portion of the windows. There were plates of ground coffee placed all over the room but it didn't help much. So, we bought spray cans and sprayed all over the room.
Next day, the smell got stronger and we asked front desk to do something about it.
They placed more ground coffee but it didn't help much. So, we set room fan in high speed and kept it on for the whole night which seemed to help a lot.
We liked the hotel and everything about them except this odor problem.
If you are going to use this hotel, avoid suite room #500.

You can contact the hotel to send a taxi for you. The cost from the airport to the hotel is $34 USD. (That was what my family paid for 3 adults).

I don't think this is the type of hotel that you are looking for. As it is a family friendly hotel. However, I don't think there will be anyone stopping you other than the security at the G/F of the hotel.

Yes, the rooms are quite large, however many do not have good natural light. We stayed twice with two different rooms. Both were quite large. The staff are very helpful and will, I am sure find a suitable room.
