Our Intrepid tour guide in San Jose tells us it is perfectly safe yet our hotel can only be entered and exited if the concierge unlocks the door for you. The hotel is basic. Breakfast is meagre. You have to choose what you want the night before and tell them what time you want it. There is no buffet - no extras and coffee is dispensed from a pump thermos. The location on a main road, close to a train line means that it is very noisy and it is a good 30 minutes walk into the central area on poor roads/intermittent pavements and passing property with razor wire security. It doesn't feel safe at all.

Nice enough hotel. Close to city center & bars and restaurants. However, they wanted to charge me extra for air conditioning in a room that didn't even have a ceiling fan. A very humid night followed.

Our experience was basically very good. We stayed there at the beginning and at the end of our trip to Costa Rica. The second time we were in a room upstairs and had a problem with the grout (brown color) staining the white towels in the bathroom and we were accused of staining the towels with makeup. Solutions would be to seal the grout and/or provide hooks to hang towels on.

I really couldn't find much to like about this hotel (two separate one night stays) Dingy rooms, although upstairs rooms are a little better. Bedding is poor quality and pillows are TERRIBLE. Mostly cold showers but they seem to have a mind of their own.
It is however in a fairly nice neighbourhood, with plenty of trendy and upmarket cafes and shops within easy walking distance.
The most bizarre thing about this odd little hotel is that the front doors are kept locked at all times - yes, you have to find a staff member to let you in OR out day or night.

This hotel feels like a homey auberge or inn. The rooms are largely different (I have now stayed in three), comfortable and clean, set in a higgly piggly design. Staff let you in and out, so you feel secure in a place that, for all its love of rice and beans, encloses its homes with fences and gates. Most important? The staff is incredibly attentive and helpful.

We only stayed a single night and went out for a meal so basically only slept here. did't have breakfast so cant comment on that.

The room was basic but adequate. some interesting electric cable plug socket plumbing as well, obviously not had a modernised re-wire !

Not much conversation to be had from the guy who checked us in so dont expect a gushing welcome.

It certainly is a bit quirky, bit dark with old fashioned furniture and objects strewn around.

Not exactly a posh place but not expensive so good value for money if you just need a place for a few nights.

We stayed here twice. First time in Room 17, with no opening window, spacious but very tatty and worn. It also faced the road. The breakfast was part of our booking and it was very poor. The toast was inedible, scrambled egg bounced off our plate, and no jam. We had to ask for another cup of coffee which was half filled. Our second stay was a better Room 3 on the ground floor and was quieter. The breakfast was still awful.
The staff in this Hotel were variable, but one very helpful young man on Reception needs to be thanked by us but I am sorry I do not know his name.
The Hotel is a good 20 minute walk along a main road. There are trendy Bars and cafes nearby.

We stayed here 2 times (at the start and end of a group tour). The hotel has some nice rooms, some with ac but it also has some noisey rooms as the hotel sits between a busy road and a rail track. It does not have a bar or restaurant. Breakfast was OK but a bit overpriced. You had to get the staff to open the front door to enter or exit the hotel.

I stayed at this hotel twice, once upon arrival to San Jose and then again the night before flying back. On both occasions the welcome was always warm and friendly, the staff at reception spoke English well and were always available to help if needed. You had to leave your keys when you left the hotel and then ring the doorbell to get back in, but I quite liked this as it kept the hotel secure. The rooms varied quite a lot from the few within our group I saw, some larger/nicer than others, but it was fine as a base in central San Jose or for airport stops. The water in the showers takes a while to warm up but it's so hot and humid that the coolness was welcome! You could walk 10/15 minutes or so either way from the hotel and either be at a large shopping centre or plenty of restaurants/bars. Also, the rooms at the front of the hotel (eg. 18) were quite noisy as the hotel is on a busy main street but it was absolutely fine for a short stay - thank you!

This is by no means a luxury hotel and definitely has a hostel feel to it but I honestly can’t fault it. The rooms were spacious and felt clean and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. It’s in a really nice area of San Jose within walking distance of some great restaurants. There is some building work going on nearby and it’s on a main road so not the quietest but you’d struggle to find somewhere that is especially within this price range. I’d stay again.

Does the car rental company still bring cars to the hotel?
Answer from Boutique Hotel C
San Jose, Costa Rica2 contributions
Hello Mike: Not all the car rental companies bring their cars to the hotel, but those that don't do it send a driver to take the customer to the office. If you tell me which company you have in mind I can find out how they proceed. Best regards. J. Ernesto Quesada
