Saladero Eco Lodge has to be my favorite spot I have ever been on vacation. Period. From the moment my wife and I we arrived we knew it was going to be special. The lodge is tucked in amongst the primary forest of Piedras Blancas National Park and we saw lots of wildlife, including macaws and toucans, tayras and howler monkeys. Having unlimited access to kayaks, paddleboards and snorkel gear in the beautiful Gulfo Dulce was magical, we saw so many bright fish, as well as sting rays, dolphins and a sea turtle. Because there are only a handful of cabins, it feels like you have your own private oasis in the rainforest, making for a peaceful and candid experience. The guided-tours were fantastic, our favorite was the tour deep into the mangroves. They serve incredible and filling fresh food for every meal that you enjoy at a wholesome, communal table overlooking the ocean. On top of all this, where Saladero really shines is with their incredible staff, who make you feel like family and go above and beyond to show and teach about their lofty goals of sustainable tropical permaculture, re-seeding coral reefs and leaving most of their land untouched for the wildlife to thrive. We wish we would have stayed at Saladero longer and vow to return. Pura vida!

The 2 of us just finished a week at Saladero, and it was without question a very unique experience which quenched our thirst for peace, relaxation, adventure and immersion in the best of what nature has to offer. The experience started on the initial boat ride from Puerto Jimenez airport to the lodge on the other, undeveloped side of Golfo Dulce, as we were able to see large schools of feeding fish and a beautiful dolphin swimming alongside the boat. 25 minutes later we were there, in paradise. We stayed in the bungalow, which was close to the beach house where all the wonderful, healthy meals are served, and it was very cozy and comfortable, with its own bathroom, attached outdoor shower, and lighting. It was surrounded by lush gardens, and was also right next to the edge of the rainforest. It was nice to be so close to the dining area, the gulf, and the jungle! The best part for me, other than the incredibly beautiful and peaceful atmosphere and scenery, were the daily hikes we did up into the rainforest, and the hours spent each day swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, paddle boarding or boating in the magnificent Golfo Dulce and the nearby river where we toured red and white mangroves via boat, kayak. The wildlife we encountered on the trip was stunning. All manner of birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and insects. We could feel the energy from the land, the sea and the animals, and we will never forget it. Last but not least, the staff were friendly, informative, fun, and engaging. It is a spiritual place, and when we left we were changed by the experience. Thank you Saladero. Pete and Jerrilynn

Saladero Ecolodge is a lovely remote getaway on the shores of Golfo Dulce. We stayed there 3 nights as a part of a kayaking trip with friends. The staff was very welcoming and helpful! The food was excellent, from refreshments when we arrived to wonderful vegetarian and fish dishes with special Costa Rican flavors, fresh, sweet fruit, wonderful juices, and packed lunches for our day trip. We were always well fed! We stayed in the glamping tents. They were simple but clean and comfortable. Bring a headlamp and small battery powered lantern, there is no electricity in the tents or bathroom, which is a bit if a walk from the tents. The grounds are beautiful, full of flowers, trees and birds. A paradise setting with gorgeous sunsets!

Our stay at Saladero Eco Lodge was fantastic. We were met in Puerto Jimenez for our trip across the Golfo Dulce by Yolanda and Oscar. And what a trip, we saw hundreds of dolphins and a manta ray! The lodge was quiet but with lots of activities if you want. The staff are lovely, friendly, and helpful. Meals were delicious and portion sizes were large (but they would gladly accommodate any requests). Everyone went out of their way to be helpful. We were treated like friends. Oscar took us on the river tour and spotted many, many birds for us, it was well worth it.

This place charges per person and says all meals are included. But if the website says they are serving a vegan menu- you need to arrive prepared. Let me describe a few meals for you: one dinner was a pile of rice and some steamed or boiled zucchini. That's it. One breakfast was two pieces of bread, some margarine and some fruit. That's it. One lunch was a hot broth (yes, it was 98 degrees with full humidity, but sure, please pass the hot broth)- with two tablespoons of lentils and a side of raw cabbage. I was extremely hungry the entire time I was here. I don't expect a "vegan" resort to serve me meat, but I do think that some protein is warranted if you are going to feed people for a day of hiking/snorkeling/ kayaking, etc. I personally did not have enough fuel coming from a plate of rice and zucchini to get me through the night, let alone the entire next day after eating my two pieces of bread. They couldn't spare a half-cup of rehydrated black beans? The food resembled what would be served in a prison, but probably with less protein. If you need protein, bring it yourself- beef jerky, peanut butter, protein bars- enough for one serving for every meal that you spend here. Our camping tent structure was fine- the beds were fine- but the structure is not sealed- it is open air. You sleep under a mosquito net, which sounds romantic, but my net had holes in it and it did not close on one side. I woke up every morning with giant welts all over me. They are only big enough to hold two twin beds with one foot of space in between, and about 2.5 feet of space at the foot of the bed. You can't move around inside the tent. Also, everyone can see you when you are changing clothes, which I guess isn't that big of a deal in the grand scope of things. It is a giant step to get in and out of the tent structure, so if you have mobility issues, you are going to need some kind of step stool to get in and out. I had a hard time and my mobility issues are not very bad. There was an ant nest right outside the opening of our tent, so every time I'd pause to put on my shoes outside, biting, stinging ants would swarm all over me and bite my feet. I know this is the rainforest, but this was one of the worst parts of our tent. So, my main tips: bring your own food, sleep with deet on, bring a headlight (there are no lights along any of the paths, you have to walk to the bathroom in the pitch black and the sun sets at 5:45 pm) and bring some more of that food.

My family of four (2 teenagers 17 & 19) spent 6 nights in the Beach apartment over Christmas. This was a wonderful place that was thoroughly enjoyed by the entire family. Valeria, who heads up the tours, has an amazing knowledge of all of the flora and fauna in the jungle and the water. We saw snakes, howler monkeys, dolphins, countless types of birds. One day we kayaked through a pod of spotted dolphins. Amazing experience! The apartment was clean with two bathrooms and great views of the water. Nice to be close to the common area on the first floor. The meals were fresh and tasty and always fun to sit down to community meals. (All meals were vegetarian) Even had a festive party on Christmas nIght. Some of our favorite times were with the many interesting people we met from all over the world. Oscar is very friendly boat captain and greatly enjoyed meeting the owners of the lodge. I'd highly recommend this place for those that appreciate nature and adventure in a pristine jungle setting.

Saladero Eco Lodge is a beautiful little retreat into a natural, charming, untouristic, and sustainable little oasis amid the sparkling waters of the Golfo Dulce. There is a beach lovely for swimming, SUP and sea kayaking; and there are many animals in the forest and that traverse the property. It was a delight to awaken to a symphony of howler monkeys and birds every morning. Most of the accommodation options are quite basic but are immersed in nature and the new owners are in the process of renovating them. The communal space for eating and gathering is very comfortable and faces the water. Paulina's food was incredible and very healthy, sourced from the gulf, gardens and nearby farms. One of the new co-owners, a small family, were there with us and we had a wonderful time with them. They were very attentive, accommodating, knowledgeable and joyful. An unforgettable trip!

Great setting. We were interested in the flora and fauna (butterflies and dragonflies especially) and Saladero was a perfect place to explore. Their property has primary forest with trails, streams, and great variety of life. Night hikes were productive. Harvey and Susan were great hosts, really helpful to see that our stay was what we had hoped. Snorkeling was excellent too. Highly recommend.
