Our stay here was ruined by the arrival of about 25 appallingly behaved American schoolchildren who were badly supervised almost to the point of neglect. They were allowed to kick footballs into the wildlife habitats and trample the Dart frog's homes whilst making a huge noise that scared all the wildlife away. At mealtimes they were sticking their fingers in...

Chilamate Rainforest Eco Retreat is a family run sustainable tourism project dedicated to rainforest conservation and contributing positively to the surrounding community. (note: I plagiarized that sentence but it's accurate nonetheless.) We got a recommendation to check this place out while on a snorkeling tour in Quepos. We spent our first 5 days in Costa Rica at a resort and...

On a most pleasurable split 17 day stay I was in private room #4 for 14 nights and #5 for 3 nights. The beyond basic bedrooms and bathrooms were large, well-maintained, well-insulated as I never had to turn on the fan, quite clean, and had ample storage shelving. Meghan, the co-owner, (unasked) went above and beyond in providing me with...

When we arrived on the parking lot we were warmly greeted by the staff of the lodge, they took our luggage and brought them to our room with a golf cart ( the parking lot is about 200 meters from the logde ). The room is very nice and spacious, with a hammock and a seat to relax outside with...

I stayed at Chilamate Eco Retreat for a week in February 2017. I was staying in one of the bungalows, and was very well looked after by Meghan Casey and her staff. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful and did everything they could to ensure that my visit was comfortable and to arrange trips and activities for me. The Eco...

I went with my tour group from school, therefore we stayed in cabin type rooms. That whole section was great and we had a lot of fun. The food was local and very good. The host family was extremely nice too. We saw a wide variety of new animals and insects inside the retreat.

3 night stay. Setting is across the river and away from the road. ~3 min walk from parking to lodge. Hosts would definitely help with baggage if needed. Simple/basic yet comfortable accommodations. Sound of the river. Excellent hosts and staff. We liked the firm king bed in #5. Very good meals using local/fresh ingredients; we had our breakfasts & dinners...

We love Chilamate so much we returned on our recent trip. We visited 3 years ago and just got back from a 10 day kayaking trip with Selva Whitewater. During our trip we stayed with Chilamate again and our only regret was that we didn't stay there more nights on our kayaking adventure around the various parts of Costa Rica....

Carolina enchanted us with her lively and engaging story of chocolate growing and production. The opportunity to watch and then taste the chocolate at each stage was great. The project is self funded. asking for donations from visitors and the shop sells goods, including chocolate, which supports the local economy so you must buy something here to support this fantastic...

A lovely small-scale family lodge (not a luxury hotel), a series of cabins and a main meeting / dining space, run by big-hearted Meghan and her husband Davis (who built the whole place!!). It has great food and early nights. Set in the jungle, you sleep to the sound of the river it fronts on, woken by howler monkeys. Gumboots...
