Hotel Villas Playa Samara is a quite small / easily walkable property boasting very beautiful and well maintained grounds . Rooms range from recently renovated to those with original, somewhat tired decor. We started our stay in the former and were graciously upgraded fairly soon thereafter. It really made all the difference once we settled into our renovated villa (#12 btw) which was clean, spacious, modern and offered a wonderful beach / garden view. We would highly recommend booking a renovated suite in order to optimize your visit. Reliable WiFi and a smoke-free environment throughout the entire property were very pleasant surprises. With access to only one restaurant we were concerned about the quality and variety of food - fear not, the a la carte menu offered plenty of options in addition to nightly specials and we are happy to report that all meals were excellent! Top marks to the chefs for their delicious creations!! The tourism industry in Costa Rica was hit hard by covid; as a result many resorts are still in the process of ramping back up, hiring / training new staff, etc as is the case with this resort. On a positive note, newly hired staff hold excellent potential - they really are trying their best at all times and their hearts are in the right place! One standout in particular was Luna at front desk who went above and beyond throughout our stay. Restaurant staff were very welcoming as well. That said, it took a long time for tasks such as new towels, drinks at the restaurant, etc... to arrive (often times you'd have to get your own drinks as staff was too busy). It didn't really bother us but we could see how prolonged response times could be a red flag for some travellers. The beach was one of the better ones we've seen at the numerous Costa Rican resorts we've visited over the years. The pool was also a very nice place to relax. We found it easy to secure lounge chairs in both areas at any time of the day - no need to reserve spots at 6am like you'd experience at many resorts. One last item of note - be aware that the resort is located approximately 2 - 2.5 hours from Liberia airport, depending on traffic. We weren't aware so it came as a bit of a surprise after an already long day of travel to get there. Not to scare anyone off though. We felt the drive and other minor shortcomings were well worth the overall positive experience we enjoyed while visiting Hotel Villas Playa Samara. We would love to visit again once their new staff, renovations and overall program are in full swing - we are confident a 5 star rating will be well within reach! Until then, if you are looking for a quiet beach resort with lovely grounds, friendly staff and plenty of sun to relax at, Hotel Villas Playa Samara will definitely check those boxes.

Just returned from another awesome week at this little piece of Heaven. This was our third time staying at this all-inclusive resort, and like the first two times, it did not disappoint. This is mainly due to the wonderful staff who work tirelessly, day in and day out, to ensure that you enjoy every minute of your stay. A huge thank you goes out to the bar and dining room staff: Pacheco (Dago), Roger, Denis, Roxana, Alex, Senay and Bra. Their professionalism, the pride that they take in their work and their friendliness is unsurpassed. They are the reason that we keep returning to this little gem. Because of COVID, the dining has changed from buffet to a la carte service. There is something for everyone on the menu and you can order as much as you want. The swim-up pool bar was closed, but the wait staff went out of their way to deliver food and drinks to us at the pool. Yes, the resort is older, but the beauty and cleanliness of the grounds make up for that. Some of the villas have been refurbished, but the older ones are just as comfortable and very large. The beachfront villas have an incredible view of the beach and ocean, and the others have views of the beautiful gardens. The staff if wonderful, the property is beautiful, the Wi-Fi works great, the service is excellent, there is abundant hot water and the air conditioning blows cold. What more could you ask for???

We stayed at this cosy resort for two weeks, Mar 26 - Apr 8. This is a small resort, with a single buffet and one restaurant. One pool that is kept meticulously clean. The single storey buildings and lots of green space create a very quiet calm atmosphere. The grounds of the resort are lovely with many different trees and tropical vegetation. Lots of iguanas, squirrels, and birds flitting about. Our room was a 1 bedroom, tucked away at the edge of the resort under a massive tree that made for excellent hummingbird watching every morning. Had an issue with hot water that was dealt with professionally and quickly resolved. The staff at this resort really made this a very memorable stay: many thanks to Senay, Denis, Disley, Roxana and Alex for the excellent service and kindness each day at the restaurant. Mustn’t forget to mention Dago for the best mango margaritas in Costa Rica! (Still hoping Prosecco becomes a house wine) Muchas gracias to all of you. ❤️ During our stay, my partner celebrated his birthday: he was treated to a lovely cake, and our room was decorated beautifully with balloons and flowers. All unexpected, but so greatly appreciated. If you are looking for a quiet place to recharge, with lovely food, cold drinks, and Pura Vida, don’t overlook this little gem. We are already planning our next visit. Hasta luego!

The hotel and villas are situated at the southern end of Samara Beach. The grounds were very well kept. The villas are fairly old and could use some TLC, but are impeccably clean. The villa (11A) we were assigned was spacious (living room, kitchen, large bedroom with king size bed) right on the beach, which allowed us to see the sunset from our patio and hear the breaking waves throughout the night. The AC in the bedroom was very efficient and quiet. As there were few guests at the hotel, all meals were “à la carte” and served in the main outdoor dining room. The food was the best I ever had in a resort, the meats are amazingly tender and tasty. Lots of tropical fruits could be had, according to the season. The staff was extremely helpful, courteous and friendly. Given that there were so few guests at the time, we were treated like royalty. The Hotel Azura hotel (individual rooms on three floors) next door is modern and has a selection of restaurants. The food is apparently exceptional, but we were not allowed access to those restaurants, although guests of the Hotel Azura were allowed to eat at our dining room. The pool at the Villas is spacious and includes a jacuzzi. Unfortunately, and unlike it was advertised on the Air Canada Vacations website, we did not have free access to bicycles, boogie boards or kayaks. We purchased our own boogie board in Samara at the New China market, whereas kayaks could be rented on the beach for 10USD/hour. The waves are typically small at the south end of the Samara Beach. The village is about a 30-minute walk at the northern end of the beach. Slightly larger waves occur closer to Samara, but a very nice and more pristine beach with larger waves and very few tourists can be found a 15-minute walk away, south of the hotel, at Carillo Beach. Look for the crocodiles in the river at the south end of Carillo Beach.

Cute villas in a beautiful garden. Lovely rooms with all you need to relax. Long walks on the beach with unforgettable sunsets. A restaurant with excellent menus and an incredible team to make you feel home: gracias Pacheco, Gabriel, Brayner and the girls for the delicious pina colada and a great service. With such dream surroundings, we felt secure and manage to forget the pandemic!

Like most, we were overdue for a family vacation. It had been well over two years since we last had one and the comfort level between all of us was varying. We all agreed though, that an out of country vacation would be great. We liked that this location was on a large, shallow and calm beach (great for beginner level surfing which some of us tried) and a reasonable distance from day trips we were primarily interested in. That’s the one thing I’d check before booking: make sure you know in advance what day excursions you’d want to take (if that’s your thing) and ensure you are willing to spend the time on a taxi or mini-bus to get there. Our upper limit was 2 hours one way and so we could considered some excursions just good far for a day trip, but did hear about some other families that drove 3+ hours to get to volcano and/or rainforest destinations. Our highlight was the canopy tour (ziplining) in Diamantes. The “Superman” line was just awesome! The hotel and resort area was what you would expect during times when the tourism industry has been hit hard by the pandemic: a little in need of some updating but understandably catching up with the absence of tourism revenue and some of the amenities still impacted by COVID guidelines and restrictions. The grounds of the resort area were very well kept and, of course, COVID still can’t cheat you from having amazing beach weather, the sounds of nature and fresh and warm tropical breezes. The occupancy rate definitely seemed lower during pandemic times. As I mentioned at the beginning of my review, this suited us just fine as there weren’t large crowds anywhere to deal with, not much waiting for anything really and the only-site COVID testing made it real convenient. Although, thank goodness the testing requirement goes away for Canadians effective April 1st! That just seems like a money grab nowadays. The staff of the resort was very responsive and warm. We were very well taken care of by the restaurant crew: Roger, Dago, Belen, Seney, Alex, Roxana, Josimar and Denin. Thank you all for making me and my family feel so welcomed! The process of getting to and from Costa Rica/Canada was not as bad as I had prepared myself for. Yes, there were added steps but if you’re prepared, it’s not bad at all. I’m Taft, we left on 03/12, which would have been one of the busiest travel days of the year out of Pearson and we got to the airport and sitting at our gate within 30/40 minutes. It helped only having carry-on luggage. Upon return, despite a little congestion in the customs area when we first landed, we still got all the way through to our taxi within 45/55 min max. We were prepared for the worst and instead, this may have been the quickest we’ve been processed getting out and back into the country that we’ve ever experienced during a March break vacation. Overall, we had a great experience. It was relaxing and are all feeling recharged and created some wonderful experiences. If your situation and expectations are in line with ours, I would highly recommend the Hotel Villas Playa Samara.

We were looking for a quiet, all inclusive, on the beach - not a tall hotel full of people. The villas were perfect! It's a very simple spot with one restaurant, but the service was fantastic and the staff extremely friendly. The bartender, Pacheco, was the most helpful to us. He was willing to help us out any way he could (not just for drinks). The villas are steps from the beach and are well spread out. Some villas have 2 units, and some are single unit. There's great snorkeling just off the rocks near the hotel too! The Azura Resort is owned by the same people and shares the campus - it was much busier but the people tended to stay to their own side. The town of Samara is a great little beach town about 30mins walk along the beach of a 6$ cab ride from the hotel. Several little restaurants, bars, smoothie shops, and surf schools along the way. Samara Adventures is a great place in town to get set up for day tours. All in all, the villas were fantastic - exactly the kind of spot we were looking for. Some people have complained about a small menu... they must just be picky eaters. The menu is not huge, but to be there for 7-10 days, you could eat something different each day. Plus there's a different soup of the day as well as a unique chef's special for dinner. There's plenty of options.

We absolutely adored Hotel Villas Playa Samara! Facts - it is very small. Very simple. One restaurant. One pool. Nothing/entertainment going on. Can walk everywhere in 60 seconds, which was appreciated! That being said, we knew we would be on and off the resort alot so we were not looking for that. The food, is fine..small menu, decent options, does get tiring, but so much good food in Samara, so we mixed it up alot! Everything was clean, staff were lovely, and prompt with helping out. We were in one of the villas, which we very much enjoyed!!! Would absolutely would go back to this place in a heartbeat!💕 Don't listen to the negative reviews. If you want laid back, nice pool. Amazing beach - you'll get it!!

No hot water for three nights with no apologies or discounts. "All inclusive" food is an hour wait, and inedible, forcing us to go into Samara for all meals. Villa on beach had no A/C in main room and broken A/C in master bedroom. There is no manager onsite to help resolve issues. We would not stay here again for free.
