We stayed in a Smithsonian room for three nights. The accommodations are very standard, but the room was clean and the food was adequate. This place is really about the setting. The (no longer active) volcano view was amazing, and I really enjoyed the self guided hikes on the property and in the park. There were so many birds and...

We were lucky to get a room - book early. The first night they didn't have a standard room available so we stayed in the Casona, with shared bathrooms. It was quite nice and we had a view of both the volcano and the lake. Then we moved to a standard room near the Casona for two more nights. It...

Did not stay here but had lunch here. Beautiful views of the volcano and Lake Arenal. Food was good. Was here with a group so don't know about prices.

Be advised the volcano has been inactive for over a year - something not noted on the website. We were surprised when we found our room to have 3 bunk beds and shared bathroom facitilies! Also the drive here is a rough gravel road for several kilometers. None the less the grounds are well maintained and beautiful.

The Arenal Observatory Lodge, a former Smithsonian volcano observation site, is a collection of buildings including a lodge and several accommodation blocks. These are set in manicured grounds with views of the volcano. The road to the lodge is unmade and hilly so it is best to have a 4WD. The rooms and bathrooms are large and functional with the...

The rooms are very plain, but comfortable. Bring earplugs though, because the walls are paper thin. Some of the staff were nice and accommodating, others (particularly one man at the front desk) was a bit arrogant and rude. The food here was overpriced for the quality, which was nothing special. You are definitely paying for the view, which is amazing...

We were thinking that the "lodge" would be a great way to split the drive time in 1/2 as we were going from Manzanillo (Caribbean side) to Nosara (Pacific side)...it was a last minute choice and we thought why not get up close and personal with Arenal. We did not expect much in the way of appointments and honestly thought...

We were very excited to arrive at the Arenal Observatory Lodge and were expecting it to be one of the highlights of our trip however on arrival we were greeted by a miserable and very rude man on reception who seemed to find checking us in a huge effort which he could barely be bothered to perform. We didn't have...

Best place we stayed in our 2 weeks in Costa Rica (we were there 4 nights). Fabulous for birders, as the feeders and grounds are as good as advertised. We stayed in room 41 which was the best room in the lower area down the hill from the main lodge area. The room was great! One side facing Arenal lake...

Activities at the hotel include hikes to the waterfall or to explore Cerro Chato (an extinct volcano with a small lake in the crater), horseback riding, bicycling through the trails, enjoying a refreshing swim in our pool, or simply relaxing with a massage in our SPA. The hotel is well located to serve as a base for a variety of excursions such as: Cano Negro Nature Refuge, hot springs, Venado Caves, Canopy Tours, Arenal Hanging Bridges, Fishing, White Water Rafting, Canyoning, Biking etc. It also serves as a very interesting stop before heading on to Monteverde Cloud Forest or to the beaches of the Pacific coast.
