Pro's--Huge, sprawling place, helpful staff, great view, nice free 3 hour hike in a.m., decent restuarant (lunches were so-so..had dinner their one night which was great. We also did the Cerro Chato hike from the hotel (by ourselves)--truly 4 hours and not for the weak knee'd, but great, great, hike, Lava Flow hike was o.k. Had 15 minutes of complete...

We were disappointed that the volcano is now dormant. I don't know how we didn't hear the news until we were there at the lodge. But the views of the volcano and the surrounding areas are so beautiful that it is still a great destination to visit. The birding alone was great. We went on a very late walk to...

The natural surroundings of this observatory lodge are other worldly. The trees are extremely tall and loaded with big bromeliads and other epiphytes. The birds come in to the observatory deck area to feast upon the fruit put out by the restaurant. Great view of the volcano. The planted grounds around the hotel are stunning. The hot tub is large and...

We could not get into the smithsonian rooms as in the past so had to take two rooms in the casona cottage.Besides having to share a bathroom with the other guests,it was a pleasent suprise that it was off the main path from the other areas and main lodge. Food was great and we had no bad things to report.We...

AOL is THE place for views of the volcano AND of Arenal Lake. The grounds are quite extensive and very well-maintained. They offer a great bargain of guided horseback riding (small horses in great shape) for only $10/hr! Bkfst buffet is great, dinner menu expensive (should have only ordered from the 'pastas'). Lunch we managed once in La Fortuna (ask...

Just came back from a week trip to Costa Rica. Stayed for 4 nights at this place. the lodge is very serene and peaceful. Probably offers the best views of the Volcano and the lake. We stayed in the "Smithsonian" room and waking up every morning to the view of the Volcano was nice. The lodge has lots of trails...

Wow what a view, the volcano is right there, you can see it and hear it..... After a long drive we arrived at the lodge and checked in, we went to our room and it wasn't the one we had reserved, we had reserved a room where you could see the volcano while laying in bed as advertised on their...

If you are going to see the volcano, this is the place to be. The grounds are perfect and beautifully landscaped. With a ton of hikes to take (all with views of the volcano), you won't lack in things to do. The pool is very nice. The staff is great. The food is very good. You can't go wrong here....

We did not stay here but we did come to see the volcano. They have the best view from the deck and they place fruit on sticks to draw tons of wild beautiful fun colored birds. I'm not a birder but these are COOL! To use their grounds it costs 4 dollars per person. This includes access to the bar/restaurant....

When visiting Arenal, you can't really get any closer to the volcano (which has been dormant since 2010, just an FYI) than this hotel. The views from the deck and restaurant are spectacular. You're right in the park, so they have hiking trails on the grounds and guided tours of those hiking trails. It's a lodge, so the rooms are...

Activities at the hotel include hikes to the waterfall or to explore Cerro Chato (an extinct volcano with a small lake in the crater), horseback riding, bicycling through the trails, enjoying a refreshing swim in our pool, or simply relaxing with a massage in our SPA. The hotel is well located to serve as a base for a variety of excursions such as: Cano Negro Nature Refuge, hot springs, Venado Caves, Canopy Tours, Arenal Hanging Bridges, Fishing, White Water Rafting, Canyoning, Biking etc. It also serves as a very interesting stop before heading on to Monteverde Cloud Forest or to the beaches of the Pacific coast.
