The Alajuela backpacker hostel is located about 8 minutes from the SJO airport. They gave us a free taxi to the hotel which was great. We didn't want to go into San Jose so it was the perfect spot to catch a bus out in the morn. Bus stop is within walking distance from the hostel as well as a...

Close to the airport and a very reliable free airport shuttle. Not a great location except for proximity to airport. My private room had a very comfortable king sized bed. A very pleasant roof top cafe with well priced and very tasty food is great option for dinner.

Unfriendly attention at the reception, dirty humid room, dirty sheets (if I can call them like that), UNHEALTHY CONDITIONS at the showers and bathrooms in general. In this point, I wondered if they working legally or not. I was afraid to get a BACTERIA if taking a shower

The hostel is good for a night stop over to the airport. They offer airport transportation. It's not a social shuttle. There is a bar on the fourth floor. I upgraded to a private room. I had one of the best hot full pressured showers I have had in Costa Rica, so extra star for that. The only down side...

Short version: I made a reservation, but when I arrived they said I had to pay 25% more because they had rented my lower price room to someone else. It felt like a bait and switch scam to take advantage of me when I had already arrived with nowhere else to go. Longer version: I've stayed here several times over...

Nice, clean hostel. Airport transport was an added bonus which we really appreciated. Only negative was that the bar was already closed when we got back at 10pm. We were in a room for 10 people and, as everyone was asleep, we felt obliged to be really quiet and go straight to sleep.

Traveling takes a lot of time if one is covering a lot of territory but also enjoying the journey. From Puerto Viejos it's prudent to take the public bus system to San Jose the night before one's flight. 5-6 hour ride, very cheap, just make time. Another time saver and very good deal was to stay at this hostel. Very...

I want to just preface this by stating that I'm very privileged with my lodging experiences - I usually stay at relatively nice places. This was also my first hostel experience, so I really have nothing to compare it to, but I thought, "Hey, I'm going to Costa Rica with a friend...let's dive right in!" It was easy to book...

Rude and unfriendly staff, no AC. The only good thing of this place is the bar at the 4th floor. There are better options in heredia. We did not like it so we chose a boutique hotel in heredia in our night prior departure. Not recommended even for one night stay.

I've stayed at Alajuela Backpackers twice. Both times was the night before my flight back home. The front desk staff are kind and considerate. The place is clean, tidy & comfortable. They have a free shuttle service to the airport with lots of options for times. The intimate rooftop bar is the best view! most of all, loved the disrupted...
