Firstly - San Jose is really not worth it. Alajuela is far closer to the airport, and San Jose is just used as a base for tours that are far closer to Alajuela anyway. San Jose doesn´t have that Latino city vibe. It´s just a bit crowded. I was expecting some amazing bars... couldn´t find them. Realised my mistake &...

The Alajuela Tropical Hostel is a great place to stay near the San Jose Airport in Costa Rica. Alonso is warm and welcoming, and the place is clean and comfortable. A great first (or last) stop in Costa Rica.

We loved staying at Alajuela Tropical Hostel so much that we stayed both upon arrival in Costa Rica and before we left. The rooms are clean, comfortable and cozy. The hostel is in a safe neighborhood with a security guard patrolling the neighborhood 24 hours a day. Like most places in Costa Rica, it can be difficult to locate, so...

Alonso picked us up from the airport and welcomed us into his hotel. He helped us to rent a car and drew us maps. He also recommended out of the way places for us to go see. He made us breakfast and even helped us to practice our spanish ( which wasnt very good.) The hostel is VERY clean and...

Alonso was extremely helpful, it says he only does one transfer but since he had time, on top of picking me up from the airport he also dropped us at the bus stop the next morning. When we came back to Alajuela at the end of the trip he didn't have space so he arranged another hostel for us. Would...

This hostel offers a friendly atmosphere by the personal approach of the owners. Several rooms which obviously are part of one household. The room we slept in was very small but looked clean and nice. We do know that there were other rooms available that were more spacy. The hostess offered us after 1 night to switch to the other...

Alonso, the owner, is a beautiful person. He goes out of his way to do ANYTHING to make your stay better. He will take you to dinner, pick you up, wake up at 4 am to send you off.... it goes on and on. Go to any Hostel website to see people saying the same thing I am. Alajuela is...

Don't expect anything fancy, the rooms are a bit small and have 2 single bunk beds. For budget or backpackers this is the ideal place as the owner is extremely helpful and friendly and the free airport transfer, free internet, and breakfast are all a definite plus. The upgraded room with private bath is much nicer than the other rooms...
